Group board member for integrity and legal affairs Dr. Christine Hohmann- Dennhardt commissioned a comprehensive investigation into the allegations in November 2016. Although VW do Brasil’s shared responsibility for human rights violation is at the heart of this study, its involvement in political repression by the military regime is not considered in isolation from the economic development of the company. This study also considers the general relationship of VW do Brasil managements and of the German parent company to the political leaders of the dictatorship, and examines the economic interests, colonialist ideas and political stereotypes, as well as the structures of economic opportunity, which determined patterns of behaviour in relation to, and within, the dictatorship. It also aims to show how the management of the former Volkswagenwerk AG in Wolfsburg perceived developments at their Brazilian subsidiary, and the point from which – and the reasons why – the management board committed to creating a democratic and participatory corporate culture at VW do Brasil. 6 INTRODUCTION 2 During the 1960s VW do Brasil grew into the Volkswagen Group’s biggest member- In this regard refer to the excellent over- company outside Germany, and became the fifth-largest industrial concern in Brazil. view by Sebastian Brünger in “Geschichte An extensive study of the history of VW do Brasil will reveal the importance of the und Gewissen: Der Umgang deutscher Brazilian subsidiary to the economic development of VW AG. America, Asia and Africa has been little studied to date.2 Compared to the extremely extensive, thematically and methodologically very wide-ranging research into National Socialism, research into the Brazilian military dictatorship remains little advanced. While mainly American economists have studied the macro-economic development of Brazil, and political scientists have detailed the developments in police repression policies and the gradual return to the rule of law and pluralism since 1979, there has been as yet little research into Brazil’s social history and the development of corporations in the country during the military dictatorship. Special thanks go to Dr. Ulrike Gutzmann, who comprehensively searched through all the key files in the Group archives relating to VW do Brasil, as well as providing excellent working conditions for evaluation of the files. Thanks also go to the General Works Council of VW for giving consent to inspect its historical records. And thanks are also due to the Group board members for integrity and legal affairs, Dr. Christine Hohmann-Dennhardt and from February 2017 Hiltrud Werner, who supported the research not only through their funding, but also through their personal interest. Although VW do Brasil has in recent decades destroyed almost all records of historical significance on expiration of their statutory retention periods, the staff of the Corporate History Department has made every conceivable effort to locate documents from company and state archives. Most sincere thanks are due to archivist Clarice Caires, who has been building up the VW do Brasil archive since 2013, and who was a great help in evaluating Political Police files in the São Paulo state archive. Thanks are also due to Andre Senador and Daniel Tadashi, who have supported the project actively and without reservation, and who showed the author the rightly famous Brazilian hospitality. This was invaluable in helping me progress through the studies. Abstract U.S. market versus Asian market for VW Group and Skoda Auto expansion opportunities This study examines the Volkswagen Group and Skoda Auto‘s expansion opportunities in the U.S. and Asian markets, by first taking a detailed look at the U.S. auto industry and it’s history, and in particular Detroit‘s Big Three, namely the Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation (GM) and Chrysler LLC. The study then looks at some of the defining moments and turning points of the U.S. auto industry through the 20th century, the impact of modern technologies, shifts in consumer taste and the current U.S. consumer profile. The following chapters then make a historical overview of the Volkswagen group and the Toyota Motor Corporation, being the current leader in a global car industry, and Volkswagen’s principal competitor. The study then continues with an overview of the auto industry in the BRIC countries, in particular focussing on China , India and Russia, while deliberately omitting Brazil as a separate study of Latin America was not in scope.

The Supervisory Board thanks Dr. Hohmann-Dennhardt for contributing her outstanding expertise and experience to achieving important milestones, and for supporting the Group in revising its internal guidelines and procedures. Dr. Hohmann-Dennhardt was appointed Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG with responsibility for ‘Integrity and Legal Affairs' on January 1, 2016. During the past twelve months, she has also launched improvements in the Group’s compliance structures. Furthermore, a campaign to foster the culture of integrity within the Group was rolled out under her leadership. Volkswagen AG and Dr. Hohmann-Dennhardt are parting due to differences in their understanding of responsibilities and future operating structures within the function she leads. In light of the changes initiated by Dr. Hohmann-Dennhardt and the important role of the integrity and legal affairs function for the Company, the Supervisory Board decided to appoint a successor without delay. Ms. Hiltrud Werner will take over the post. She has been Head of Volkswagen Group Auditing since January 1, 2016. Hiltrud Werner is an economics graduate; before moving to the Volkswagen Group she held the post of Chief Audit Executive at ZF Friedrichshafen AG.

Introduction to Focus 2020 by Joel Sachs The seed for this year’s Focus Festival was planted in December 2018 at a Juilliard doctoral recital by the Chilean violist Sergio Muñoz Leiva. I was especially struck by the sonata of Rebecca Clarke, an Anglo-American composer of the early 20th century who has been known largely by that one piece, now a staple of the viola repertory. Thinking about the challenges she faced in establishing her credibility as a professional composer, my mind went to a group of women in that period, roughly 1885 to 1930, who struggled to be accepted as professional composers rather than as professional performers writing as a secondary activity or as amateur composers.

People of the Beetle Generation sit up and take notice when they hear it today. They are strangely touched, experience melancholy, as though remembering something long since lost. It is a sound as unmistakable as the Beetle's silhouette: it buzzes, it putters - all against a background of soothing fan noises – a feeling of euphoria which has underscored our mobility for decades and which was the accompaniment for our independence and for growing prosperity during those years. Beginning in the late 1940's and continuing into the early 1980's, the unmistakable noise of the Beetle left its mark on the sound backdrop of German streets. And in other places, as well, the air-cooled Beetle Boxer was the lead instrument in the noisy traffic concert. This is why Volkswagen advertising from the Doyle Dane Bernbach (DDB) agency at the end of the 1960's, advertising that is already legendary today, was titled „What the world loves about Germany"; it included a colorfully mixed collection of pictures: Heidelberg, a cuckoo clock, sauerkraut with dumplings, Goethe, a dachshund, the Lorelei – and a Beetle.
