HDSBA Secretary: Gayle Bersey Email: [email protected] Tel: 07932 758689 Importing From The UK

If you wish to import sheep, embryos or semen from the UK, there are a number of things you should check before contacting individual breeders.

1. Is there an agreement between your country and the UK that allows the import of sheep, embryos or semen into your country?

2. What are the specific health requirements for importation into your country? Some countries require that flocks are scrapie monitored for a number of years. SM Scrapie monitored flocks have been highlighted in this brochure with this symbol:

3. In Europe non scrapie monitored flocks can only export sheep that are genotyped ARR/ARR.

4. For some countries, embryo donors and rams must test negative for antibody to enzootic abortion which is unlikely in vaccinated sheep. Breeders may agree not to vaccinate young sheep so they can be used but please check.

5. What strengths are you hoping to bring to your flock? It is really helpful to have a clear idea of what characteristics are important to you when you talk to breeders in the UK.

6. Importing sheep, embryos and semen from the UK is likely to take time so patience and commitment are important.

Hampshire Down flocks were established here more than 150 years ago. The breed originated from a three-way cross – Wiltshire Horn, Berkshire Knot and Southdown. These flocks were recognised as vital to maintaining fertility on thin downland soils in Wiltshire, Hampshire and Berkshire.

Pure Hampshire Down flocks proliferated across the whole of the South of England. Sales were staged at Wilton, Overton, Weyhill and other fairs with up to 20,000 head at each one. A burgeoning export trade for pure Hampshire Downs developed to major sheep producing countries across the world. Indeed Hampshire Down sheep are popular today across South America and can be found thriving both on the other side of the world in Australia and New Zealand as well as across Africa and in the Middle East.

The breed has constantly improved as a terminal sire over the last 50 years. Lamb growth rate is the key driver of performance and profitability on any commercial sheep enterprise. Fast and efficient growth is a characteristic of the Hampshire Down breed which UK breeders have sought to continually improve. This means Hampshire Down sired lambs demonstrate incredible growth making them early maturing with the ability to reach target finishing weight off forage very quickly.

Aiming to compete against an influx of terminal sires from Europe, Hampshire Down breeders have, over the last 25 years, carefully recorded and selected for important performance traits in muscling, conformation, and in particular for reduced back fat. At the same time, they have retained and enhanced the breed’s native characteristics to achieve a blend of genetics which meet the modern market requirements. Hampshire Down lambs are born with a good coat of wool and are quick to start suckling, making them hardy and able to thrive even in poor weather. Today’s UK Hampshire Down lamb grows quickly and produces longer, leaner carcasses with more muscle. The ewe are good mothers and do well on a variety of pastures.

Hampshire Down rams took part in largest UK wide progeny trial ‘Ram Compare’ run by England’s Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board’s and lamb division. In Hampshire Down sired commercial lambs the first 3 years of this trial, 12000 lambs sired by 138 rams of 5 main terminal sire breeds were compared. This trial has demonstrated that Hampshire Down rams can compete successfully with any of the popular terminal sires used in the UK in speed of finishing and carcass value. In addition Hampshire Down rams outperformed the other breeds in some important carcass traits, most especially loin muscularity where the top 5 and a total of 7 out of the top 10 rams from a total of 138 rams were Hampshire Downs.
