He worked in the clothing business, but was fired from Karstadt in Hamburg in April 1933 because he was Jewish. He later moved to Berlin, where he got married on November 15, 1938, just before they left for Shanghai on November 23. In Shanghai he held many jobs, and had to take care of his wife, Friedel, who was very sick. -

Fotografía por Randee St. Nicholas Durante casi 20 años, la tres veces ganadora del Grammy, Vikki Carr, disfrutó de una vida doméstica felizmente ordinaria con su esposo, Pedro De León, un médico de familia. “Nuestro tiempo juntos era increíble”, comenta la cantante. “De 5 a.m. a 7 p.m. atendía a sus pacientes; después, si teníamos algún evento, me decía: ‘Cariño, me ducho y estoy listo’. Y siempre lo estaba. Cuidó de mí”. Hasta que no pudo hacerlo más y entonces Carr intervino. La hermana de De León fue la primera en notar cambios en su conducta entre 2010 y 2011: se volvió olvidadizo, estaba confundido, y tenía problemas para prescribir recetas. “Ella era enfermera en su consultorio y estuvo con él durante casi 50 años, en la misma habitación todo el tiempo, así que ella lo detectó desde el inicio”, explica Carr. A principios de 2012, a los 82 años, De León fue diagnosticado formalmente con demencia. No one could imagine then what would follow. As a general practitioner working at a busy Brisbane surgery, I really did not think that it would affect us that much. How wrong I was. Within months, the World Health Organisation had named the virus COVID 19 and a pandemic was declared. Life as we knew it was changed, perhaps forever. I was fortunate to be part of a practice that had put protocols in place should the worst happen, but even so, I felt overwhelmed by the impact on the patients that I was in contact with daily. They poured their hearts out with stories of resilience, heartache and lives changed irrevocably. I contacted my friend Jane, an experienced editor and writer, about my idea to collect these tales into an anthology. In less than five minutes, she responded enthusiastically and became its senior editor, bringing her years of experience and sharp eye to detail to the anthology. Together, we spent many weekends over pots of tea and Jane’s warm scones reading the overwhelming number of stories and poems that the public entrusted to us. Our greatest regret was that we couldn’t accommodate every piece we received. -

Biography: Marshall Chapman
BIOGRAPHY: MARSHALL CHAPMAN SINGER, SONGWRITER, AND OUTLAW For five decades, Marshall Chapman has been an accomplished singer, songwriter, published author, and actor. Although her name isn’t as well known as others in the Outlaw era, she played an important role in the 1970s movement. Martha Marshall Chapman II — named after her paternal grandmother — was born on January 7, 1949, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and she was always called Marshall. Chapman’s father was a wealthy textile-mill owner and her mother was active in local politics. When she was seven, she attended an Elvis Presley concert, and she became an instant fan of rock & roll. By high school, she was performing on the guitar. In 1967, she enrolled in Nashville’s Vanderbilt University at the urging of family friend Walter Forbes, a former RCA recording artist.
