    Cecil B. DeMille’s Greatest Authenticity Lapse? By Anton Karl Kozlovic Spring 2003 Issue of KINEMA THE PLAINSMAN (1937): CECIL B. DeMILLE’S GREATEST AUTHENTICITY LAPSE? Cecil B. Demille was a seminal founder of Hollywood whose films were frequently denigrated by critics for lacking historical verisimilitude. For example, Pauline Kael claimed that DeMille had ”falsified history more than anybody else” (Reed 1971: 367). Others argued that he never let ”historical fact stand in the way of a good yarn” (Hogg 1998: 39) and that ”historical authenticity usually took second place to delirious spectacle” (Andrew 1989: 74). Indeed, most ”film historians regard De Mille with disdain” (Bowers 1982: 689)and tended to turn away in embarrassment because ”De Mille had pretensions of being a historian” (Thomas 1975: 266). Synopsis Un journaliste débusque en maison de repos le vétéran Crabb, lequel saisit sa chance de lui conter sa vie, alterna- tivement cheyenne et « blanche », de son enfance captive jusqu’à la bataille de Little Big Horn. Régulièrement « rendu à la civilisation » par les péripéties d’affrontements successifs, le héros va rencontrer différents personnages aux mœurs discutables et à chaque fois retrouver dans la tribu la sagesse de son grand-père adoptif. Not as widely known are stories of Calamity nursing smallpox victims and helping those who had fallen on hard times. Even less well known is Calamity’s desire to settle down into a safe, steady home with a husband and children. La primera está centrada en la personalidad de George Armstrong Custer, la segunda en su carrera militar, la tercera en la vida de Sitting Bull y la última en la vida de Crazy Horse. Después de haber establecido los hechos concernientes a la batalla de Little Bighorn a través de los libros de los diferentes autores y la comparación de los hechos por ellos narrados, se han estudiado las cuatro películas, comparando las secuencias de las películas con los hechos establecidos en la historia.
