our St. Laurence students, change from their lunch money once again. Some may even join two teachers, and one parent, us next summer, or some summer after that. represented St. Laurence on a F ten-day mission trip to Peru this past June. Following the Second Vatican Council, and the request of Pope Paul VI, the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers Brother Tim Smyth established a number of missions in Peru. Alumni probably remember the “mission money” that was collected during their Religion classes to help support these missions. Recently some of our schools in the North American Province have decided to do more than just send the change from their lunch money to the missions - they decided to go themselves. These schools, along with the Province Leadership Team, have encouraged more schools of the Province to become involved in these mission trips. This June was the fi rst time St. Laurence was added to the list.

In preparing for the trip, Spanish teacher Nate Grosse coordinated with Brother Steve Casey to plan what the St. Laurence group would hope to accomplish during their time in Peru. Brother Casey is a North American Brother assigned to Peru for that purpose. His philosophy is to expose the students to as much of the Peruvian reality as possible.

While in Peru, the St. Laurence mission group helped tear down and rebuild a house (granted not a very large house), visited a home for Peruvian children in need of medical care, spent time with toddlers at an orphanage, played with children in a pre-school, visited classrooms, and enjoyed a marshmallow roast with students their own age. For a deeper understanding of the history and culture of the Peruvian people, especially from the Inca infl uence, the group spent a few days in Cusco, Ollantaytambo, and Machu Picchu.

Hopefully, this mission trip will be the fi rst in a series, and the larger St. Laurence community will offer its support by contributing the

St. Laurence High School VISION 9 A LUMNI New Alumni Director Taking the Helm

Hello Viking Alums, Please allow me to introduce myself. I am the new Director of Alumni Relations. It is my goal to reach out to all of you and hopefully get you excited about the things we have going on here at St. Laurence. Being a former Catholic Leaguer, I understand the tradition and pride that we take in our schools. As Director of Alumni Relations I would like to accomplish a few things.

1. Expand upon the pride that our alumni take in their alma mater. Harold Blackmon 2. Create an open and honest dialogue with YOU the alum. To hear your opinions and suggestions. 3. Create ways and venues to get YOU back here to work with our next group of Viking Alums.

No matter where you are in your professional life, you will always be a Viking. I would like to see our Viking Nation rise up and show our current students, as well as, other Catholic schools what it truly means to have Viking Pride. Whether you were in the Band, Captain of a state-winning sports team or just a regular student, I am sure all of you at some point have had that “I’m proud to be a Viking moment.” Right now the Vikings need your support more than ever. That support can come in many forms. It can be in the form of speaking to and motivating our students, assisting our programs in any way possible or in the form of a donation. No matter how you support, we appreciate it all the same. If you have had that Viking Pride moment, we encourage you to bring it back!! Thanks to all of you for choosing to be a Viking and I look forward to hearing from each and every one of you. And always remember no matter where you are, you will always have a home at St. Laurence High School.

Sincerely, Harold Blackmon

New President of the Alumni Executive Committee

arlier this summer, St. Laurence President Joe Martinez ‘99 asked me to accept the position of President of the Alumni Executive Committee. I was glad to accept this appointment and look forward to working with fellow alumni and the St. Laurence administration in support of the school. E The mission of this alumni group will be threefold. First, to serve the current students of St. Laurence. Second, to serve the many alumni of St. Laurence. And fi nally, to provide a way for alumni to re- connect with the school and re-establish and sustain friendships.

Bill Miller ‘78 In support of our mission, during the 2012-13 academic year, the focus will be on three major initiatives: 1) mentoring; 2) networking; and 3) events. Under the direction Joe Silich ‘87, the Mentoring Committee will serve STL students by providing feedback and guidance regarding academics, college placement, career advice, etc. The Networking Committee, which is being led by Tim Wheeler ‘98, will provide a means for alumni to reach out and assist fellow alumni in a variety of areas, including potential job opportunities and services. Dennis Hickey ‘99 and Dan Crawford ‘99 have accepted the leadership of the Events Committee. The Events Committee will sponsor and support a wide variety of STL gatherings, including the annual golf outing and alumni athletic events.

In addition to the gentlemen mentioned above, Mr. Harold Blackmon, the fi rst-year varsity football coach, will also serve as the St. Laurence Director of Alumni Relations. Coach Blackmon will assist in implementing the alumni initiatives and will serve as a liaison between the Alumni Executive Committee and the school’s administration.

Everyone has been blessed to varying degrees with the gifts of time, talent, and treasure. I would like to emphasize that the Alumni Committee is not intended to be a fundraising arm of the school. Since our primary focus will be one of service – we will be reaching out for donations of time and talent. If asked, please provide as much assistance as possible in support of our efforts. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Bill Miller ‘78

The Alumni Offi ce is looking to obtain statistics from the varsity football season of 1974. If you have the fi nal individual stats (leading rushers, leading receivers, passing yardage, etc.), please let me know. This information may possibly be in copies of the Helm that year, if you have kept them. The school yearbook info is not adequate. Perhaps you may have a scrapbook or a box of clippings – anything may be of help. You can contact me at [email protected]. Thank you.

HHAPPYAPPY RRETIREMENT,ETIREMENT, TTOMOM OONDRLANDRLA

homas Ondrla retired in June after a long and distinguished 37-year career here at St. Laurence High School. Originally hired as a history teacher, Tom went on to become Assistant T Principal, Principal, and then President of St. Laurence. He served in the capacity of President for the last 12 years. Tom was feted at a retirement cocktail party here at STL in mid-June among a large crowd of family, friends, and co-workers.

It was announced at the event that there has been a Thomas Ondrla Service Scholarship established to benefi t students. It is hoped that this scholarship will be given out yearly to help students to attend or continue to attend our fi ne school.

Tom will enjoy his retirement years in west-suburban Oak Park, with his wife Christine, where their children and grandchildren all live nearby. Tom has always been a big baseball fan. Now he can devote more time to his favorite club, the Chicago White Sox.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, administration, faculty, staff, and friends of St. Laurence, we wish Tom well and the best of everything. Happy Retirement!
