Nach dem obigen Zitat lebt der Mensch seine Phantasien, Wünsche und Ängste dort aus, wo die unmittelbare Kontrolle einer Gesellschaft und einer Kultur über die Art der Erinnerung und das Vergessen am geringsten ist: im Traum. Umgekehrt manifes- tiert sich jede persönliche Erfahrung neurologisch im menschlichen Gedächtnis. Was ist aber das kulturelle Gedächtnis? Wenn es nicht die Summe aller durch ein Kollektiv geformten individuellen Gedächtnisse ist, erscheint es wie der Traum, jedoch als ein Sammelbecken eben jener kollektiv besonderen Zustände von Überzeugungen, Vor- stellungen und Praktiken. Dann ist das kulturelle Gedächtnis entweder eine “Leerstel- le” für etwas, was nicht als Summe von Einzelelementen beschrieben werden kann (Pethes/Ruchatz 2001: 8f.) oder eine metaphorische Versinnbildlichung von Kultur in Form der menschlichen Gedächtniskapazität und -eigenschaft (Erll 2005: 97). In beiden Fällen steht das kulturelle Gedächtnis für eine jedes Individuum weit überragende Raum- und Zeitdimension, vergleichbar mit der virtuellen Welt im heuti- gen Cyberspace-Zeitalter. Das kulturelle Gedächtnis ist dann wie diese eine Parallel- welt zum Individuum, von dem es sich wie beim Träumen nicht frei machen kann. Zwar wird bemängelt, dass die Theorie vom kulturellen Gedächtnis keinen Anhalts- punkt bietet, wie biologische Hirne sich zu einem solchen kollektiven Hirn zusam- menschließen (Candau 2006: 67f.), doch auch hier genügt wieder ein Blick auf das Cyberspace-Zeitalter und auf Mary Douglas (1986), deren Analyse der Entstehung von Institutionen gezeigt hat, wie mithilfe einer Analogie zur Natur die Menschen eingefangen und geprägt werden und diese umgekehrt ebenso prägen. Die im Sammelband enthaltenen Beiträge gehen auf ein im Rahmen dieses Forschungsprojekts in Shanghai, China, im Oktober 2005 abgehaltenes internationales Symposium zu Schrift und Ritual in den alten Hochkulturen Asiens und Amerikas zurück. 8 Daniel Graña-Behrens Traum, sondern im kulturellen Gedächtnis entfernt sich entsprechend der Mensch am weitesten von seiner Individualität. Zugleich ist der Mensch so ganz und gar in eine Kultur verstrickt, die, wie sie Ruth Benedicts in ihrem Buch Patterns of Culture (1934) beschreibt, Vergangenheit und Gegenwart als Gesamtheit von nicht auflösba- ren zeitlichen und räumlichen Bezügen vereint. Letztendlich wird so auch eine Syste- matizität von Kultur bejaht, die gerade im Zuge der writing (against) culture-Debatte von einigen verneint wird (Abu-Lughod 1991). In dem vorliegenden Sammelband wird das theoretische Konstrukt “kulturelles Gedächtnis” für Mesoamerika von verschiedenen Autoren allen voran über die Bedeu- tung von oraler Tradition, Schriftlichkeit und Ritual fruchtbar gemacht. Hierzu wird die Region mit ihren zeitlich unterschiedlich vielen Einzelkulturen kulturell monolit- hisch und zugleich diversifizierend behandelt. Vorweg werden allerdings vorgestellt, welche Ansätze bislang im Hinblick auf kulturelle Kontinuität, Wandel und Tradition entwickelt wurden, was sie leisten und wie sich das virtuelle Netz “kulturelles Ge- dächtnis” als Alternative in die Debatte um diesen Kulturraum einfügt. Nicht aus- schließlich, aber allen voran, wird das “kulturelle Gedächtnis” von Jan Assmann (1992) und die Betonung vom Ritual im Spiegel von Schriftlichkeit und Mündlichkeit thematisiert, jedoch im Gegensatz zu Assmanns mediterranen Hochkulturen hier das alte China kulturvergleichend erwähnt. 1. La señora Kirchhoff, mujer de una personalidad extraordi- naria, mantiene una estrecha amistad con la esposa de Karl Liebknecht, y esta relación humana encuentra su continuación comprensible en la profunda veneración que su hijo manifestara durante toda su vida por Liebknecht. EXPLAINING MESOAMERICA Eric Wolf* Anthropology is an unusual discipline - ‘impossible’, as Aidan Southall has said, ‘but necessaryi. It’s objects of study are human beings, peculiarly polymorphous as creatures both biological and cultural; behaving so you can observe them, yet also engaged in inaudible internal discussions; transforming nature through production, while simultaneously using language and making symbols. So far no one theory has done justice to this gamut of characteristics. Any one attempt at theory has inevitably privileged some aspects over others, selecting these aspects as ‘figure’ and relegating the rest to “ground”. The followers of any one of these approaches —temporarily hegemonic— always hoped that the marginalized phenomena would someday be explained by means of the dominant paradigm. Inevitably, temporary success was followed by a return of ‘the repressed’, often accompanied by claims that the hitherto back grounded material actually contained the missing key to solve all problems. These cycles of assertion and replacement have intensified as anthropologists previously confined within particular national traditions increasingly communicate trans-nationally. There is probably no one solution to this impasse in finding an all-powerful, all- embracing theory, but several more modest alternatives suggest themselves. One is to become more eclectic, to turn into a virtue what Marvin Harris has stigmatized as a vice. We might come to admit a range of theoretical perspectives and treat them as so many 'discovery procedures’. In place of one imperial master-paradigm, we could entertain the possibility of a set of micro-paradigms, each the source of a set of methods that might teach us something new and interesting about the world.

The author proposes a historical perspective to reveal the different social processes, institutions and historical events that have shaped popular religiosity in Mesoamerica. In summary, the article examines the most salient issues of the Mesoamerican religious experience, such as: Maya religion, the Catholic Church during the conquest, the colony and independence, religious syncretism, shamanism, the "cofradía", theology of liberation and the recent influence of the protestant churches. Introduction For the purpose of this study, I will use the concept of Mesoamerica following Paul Kirchhoff, who defined Mesoamerica as a cultural area occupied by "High Cultures" and "superior cultivators" as a contiguous whole. Kirchhoff understands for high cultures and superior cultivators the Maya and Nahuacultures, that had achieved by the time of the conquest a complex and stratified social system. Kirchhoff clearly establishes the importance and particularity of the Mesoamerican cultural area at the time of the conquest and since several centuries before. In geographical terms , Kirchhoff refers to central highland in central and southern Mexico, to the southern highland in south Mexico and to the southeast highland in Central America (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Born in Westphalia, under the Nazi regime in 1939, and in 1941 he became northern Germany, he studied in Berlin, Freiburg, and a Mexican citizen.

The concept of a glorious and noble Aztec nation promoted by the writings of Spanish, criollo, and Indian historians was a tenet held by many colonial subjects.

STEWARD OBERT LOWIE was one of the key figures in the history of R anthropology. His professional years spanned the first five decades of the present century. He entered anthropology not long after Franz Boas had established it as an academic discipline and had removed it from the rather philosophical study of the nineteenth century and placed it on an empirical, scientific basis. Although Lowie was initially employed for a few years by the American Museum of Natural History, his true niche was as a university scholar where his influence reached an in- creasing number of students as well as those who read his large number of publications. Lowie's principal interests were in ethnological theory, in- cluding the history of such theory, and in social organization, especially kinship, marriage, the family, kinship terminology, men's and women's societies including age-grade societies, and political and social organization. He also made major contri- butions to the study of primitive religion and folklore. Lowie did not do original research on physical anthropology or archae- ology, which were little developed during his active years, and he did not have a major interest in language.
