Above: The Pittsfield Building, located at 55 E. Washington Street, is a 38-story steel-frame skyscraper with a rectangular 21-story base that covers the entire building lot-approximately 162 feet on Washington Street and 120 feet on Wabash Avenue. The Commission on Chicago Landmarks, whose nine members are appointed by the Mayor, was established in 1968 by city ordinance. It is responsible for recommending to the City Council that individual buildings, sites, objects, or entire districts be designated as Chicago Landmarks, which protects them by law. WINDOWS AND DOORS Windows and doors are necessary features of all residential structures and should be planned carefully to insure maximum contribution to the overall design and function of a structure. Windows and doors perform several functions in a residential structure, such as: shield an opening from the elements, add decoration, emphasize the overall design, provide light and ventilation, and expand visibility. DOORS Each door identified on the foundation plan and floor plan should appear on a door schedule. Specifications vary amongst manufacturer, so it is important to have exact information for the schedule. Interior Doors Interior door types include; flush, panel, bi-fold, sliding, pocket, double-action, accordion, Dutch, and French. Flush Doors • Smooth on both sides, usually made of wood and are hollow on the inside with a wood frame around the perimeter • Standard size is 1-3/8” thick, 6’8” high and range from 2’ – 3’ wide Panel Doors Most Common Door • Panel doors have a heavy frame around the outside and generally have cross members that form small panels • The vertical members are called stiles • The horizontal pieces are called rails Bi-Fold Doors • A bi-fold door is made of two parts that together form the door • Popular as closet doors and are seldom used for other applications • Installed in pairs with each door being the same width, which ranges from 1’ – 2’ • Standard height 6’8” – 8’ • Thickness of 1-1/8” for wood doors and 1” for metal Sliding Doors • Sliding or bi-pass doors are popular where there are large openings -

Include design, materials, condition, alterations, size, setting and boundaries) The single-family residence at 1170 Signal Hill Road is a 3,299-square-foot two-story wood-frame American International-style house with an integral three-car garage that was constructed in 1957-58 and enlarged with a small studio addition at the southwest corner of the upper level in 1993 (DPR 523A photo and figures 1-3). Designed by the eminent southern California architect Richard Neutra for Arthur L. Connell, the house is set into a steep slope on the west side of Signal Hill Road. It is roughly U-shaped in plan, with a single, upper level on the east side, organized around a landscaped central courtyard, and two levels on the west side. -

Final Landmark Recommendation adopted by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, August 7, 2014 CITY OF CHICAGO Rahm Emanuel, Mayor Department of Planning and Development Andrew J. Mooney, Commissioner The Commission on Chicago Landmarks, whose nine members are appointed by the Mayor and City Council, was established in 1968 by city ordinance. The Commission is re- sponsible for recommending to the City Council which individual buildings, sites, objects, or districts should be designated as Chicago Landmarks, which protects them by law. The landmark designation process begins with a staff study and a preliminary summary of information related to the potential designation criteria. The next step is a preliminary vote by the landmarks commission as to whether the proposed landmark is worthy of consideration. This vote not only initiates the formal designation process, but it places the review of city per- mits for the property under the jurisdiction of the Commission until a final landmark recom- mendation is acted on by the City Council. This Landmark Designation Report is subject to possible revision and amendment dur- ing the designation process. Only language contained within a designation ordinance adopted by the City Council should be regarded as final. 2 CAIRO SUPPER CLUB BUILDING (ORIGINALLY WINSTON BUILDING) 4015-4017 N. SHERIDAN RD. BUILT: 1920 ARCHITECT: PAUL GERHARDT, SR. Located in the Uptown community area, the Cairo Supper Club Building is an unusual building de- signed in the Egyptian Revival architectural style, rarely used for Chicago buildings. This one-story commercial building is clad with multi-colored terra cotta, created by the Northwestern Terra Cotta Company and ornamented with a variety of ancient Egyptian motifs, including lotus-decorated col- umns and a concave “cavetto” cornice with a winged-scarab medallion. -

Ager1da Report July 15, 2019 I- TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council I FROM: Planning & Community Development Department 1 SUBJECT: DESIGNATION OF THE HOUSE AT 280 CALIFORNIA TERRACE AS A LANDMARK RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council: 1. Find that the designation of a historic resource is categorically exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) pursuant to Section 15308 Class 8 of the CEQA Guidelines pertaining to Actions by Regulatory Agencies for Protection of the Environment and there.are no features that distinguish this project from others in the exempt class and, therefore, there are no unusual circumstances; 2. Find that main residence, attached garage, arbors, dendriform sculpture, pool and hardscape adjacent to the house at 280 California Terrace meet landmark designation criterion C in Pasadena Municipal Code (P.M.C) Section 17.62.040(C)(2)( c) because they embody the distinctive characteristics of a locally significant property type, architectural style and period. The bui.lding and accessory structures are locally significant, intact example of a single-family residence property type built in the Mid-Century Modern style, designed by locally significant architect Thornton Ladd, and retains integrity; 3. Adopt the attached resolution approving a Declaration of Landmark Designation for 280 California Terrace, Pasadena, California; 4. Authorize the Mayor to execute the attached Declaration of Landmark Designation for 280 California Terrace, Pasadena, California; and 5. Architectural Styles/Types
Architectural Findings Summary of Architectural Trends 1940‐70 National architectural trends are evident within the survey area. The breakdown of mid‐20th‐ century styles and building types in the Architectural Findings section gives more detail about the Dayton metropolitan area’s built environment and its place within national architectural developments. In American Architecture: An Illustrated Encyclopedia, Cyril Harris defines Modern architecture as “A loosely applied term, used since the late 19th century, for buildings, in any of number of styles, in which emphasis in design is placed on functionalism, rationalism, and up‐to‐date methods of construction; in contrast with architectural styles based on historical precedents and traditional ways of building. Often includes Art Deco, Art Moderne, Bauhaus, Contemporary style, International Style, Organic architecture, and Streamline Moderne.” (Harris 217) The debate over traditional styles versus those without historic precedent had been occurring within the architectural community since the late 19th century when Louis Sullivan declared that form should follow function and Frank Lloyd Wright argued for a purely American expression of design that eschewed European influence. In 1940, as America was about to enter the middle decades of the 20th century, architects battled over the merits of traditional versus modern design. Both the traditional Period Revival, or conservative styles, and the early 20th‐century Modern styles lingered into the 1940s. Period revival styles, popular for decades, could still be found on commercial, governmental, institutional, and residential buildings. Among these styles were the Colonial Revival and its multiple variations, the Tudor Revival, and the Neo‐Classical Revival. As the century progressed, the Colonial Revival in particular would remain popular, used as ornament for Cape Cod and Ranch houses, apartment buildings, and commercial buildings. -

The early buildings of the First Chicago School like the Auditorium, “had traditional load-bearing walls” Martin Roche, William Holabird, and Louis Sullivan all played a huge role in the development of the first chicago school MATERIALS USED iron beams Steel Brick Stone Cladding CHARACTERISTICS The "Chicago window“ originated from this style of architecture They called this the commercial style because of the new tall buildings being created The windows and columns were changed to make the buildings look not as big FEATURES Steel-Frame Buildings with special cladding This material made big plate-glass window areas better and limited certain things as well The “Chicago Window” which was built using this style “combined the functions of light-gathering and natural ventilation” and create a better window DESIGN The Auditorium building was designed by Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan The Auditorium building was a tall building with heavy outer walls, and it was similar to the appearance of the Marshall Field Warehouse One of the most greatest features of the Auditorium building was “its massive raft foundation” DANKMAR ALDER Adler served in the Union Army during the Civil War Dankmar Adler played a huge role in the rebuilding much of Chicago after the Great Chicago Fire He designed many great buildings such as skyscrapers that brought out the steel skeleton through their outter design he created WILLIAM HOLABIRD He served in the United States Military Academy then moved to chicago He worked on architecture with O. -

Someone built it, cared for it, and made changes through the years to it. And now you're interested in finding out the "who, when and what" of your property. Researching your house can be fun, fascinating and completely engrossing. This pamphlet will help you begin, offering advice on how to identify basic information about your house and your neighborhood. It is designed to take you systematically through the process. Using the sources discussed here, you can identify: the date your house was built, if an architect is associated with its design, who had it built, and the changes that have been made to it over the years. Be sure to read the appendix as well, where detailed information on resources can be found. However, beware! Research can become addictive. It can also be frustrating. You may exhaust every source possible and still not find the answers to your questions. But no matter how many questions remain unanswered, you will have unearthed some interesting information, learned a little more about your community, and become familiar with some important public institutions in the city. So, have fun, and good luck.
