Pre-owned 1920-1950s popular Sheet Music. 1920 1921 1922 1923 1924 1925 1926 1927 1928 1929 Many of these songs have decorative front covers and some from the 1920s and „30s were especially stylish. If a front cover illustration is attributable to an artistor studio they will be named e.g. Heath Robinson, Huntrods, Fred Lowe or Barbelle. Some titles were published during the Second World War (1939 –45), sometimes in a smaller size when ink and paper were in short supply. These pieces of sheet music are secondhand, old and naturally enough, they may show signs of wear and tear. However, most of them are in excellent condition but in a few cases we consider that some damage such as edging tears, a shop stamp, pen marks or a signature are reasonable imperfections considering the age of these manuscripts. There are no detailed descriptions here as to the exact condition of the music listed below but please e-mail us for an honest appraisal of any particular piece or title. As a guide, generally titles are priced in the range £12 - £30 (US$30-$45) + post and packaging. Originally the personal collection of the singer Rita Williams, with later additions, it includes songs in various European languages and some in Afrikaans. Rita Williams sang with the Billy Cotton Club, among other groups, and made numerous recordings in the 1940s and 1950s. The songs are arranged alphabetically by title. We are excited to bring the community the second installment of this fun filled holiday variety show, which first premiered in 2015. Like many arts organizations, COVID-19 has caused a great deal of change for VACT and we face a tremendous amount of uncertainty moving forward. We are so grateful for all of the support we have received since the pandemic began. Every kind message, donation, and show of support has meant the world to us as we navigate this time without live theater and figure out how to adapt where we can. Part of that adaptability has been to take our shows virtual! Never would we have imagined one of our major fall productions being put up in this format, but VACT, like so many other theaters, has been forced to reimagine what theater looks like if we want to keep art in the community. While we don’t know when we will be able to resume our regular productions, your support will help us come back stronger than ever when it is safe to do so. We will always strive to reach new theatrical heights alongside members of the greater Verona area and surround- ing communities, and will always work to make our programs accessible to anyone.

Attitudes towards China, as well as the Chinese them- selves, were being imagined at the time through various media, including popular musical theatre. Two shows, both with music by Sidney Jones and produced by George Edwardes at Daly’s Theatre, were significant in this identity construction: The Geisha (1896) and San Toy (1899). Both musicals are set in East Asia and include Chinese and British characters. In The Geisha, which takes place in Japan, the sole Chinese char- acter is Wun-Hi, the owner of a teahouse. He is less than honorable, and his music is in an ethnic-based music hall style, with nearly speech-sung melodies and unashamed Pidgin English. In Jones’s score for San Toy, which is set in China, characters who endorse Western views sing glorious melodic lines reminiscent of Gilbert and Sullivan while those who do not sound like Wun-Hi in The Geisha, with clipped articulations and non-standard English. London at the time had a Chinese population of only about 300, and most Londoners as- sociated the Chinese with laundries, catering businesses, or opium dens.1 (Charles Dickens’ The Mystery of Edwin Drood provides a vivid example for the last of these images, with its menacing atmosphere filled with mystery and unknowing.) 1.

From the late 1880s until the 1940s, the period covered by the bulk of these materials, the performing arts thrived in Brooklyn and were available to residents right at their doorsteps. At one point, there were over 200 theaters in Brooklyn. Frequented by the rich, the middle class and the working poor, they enjoyed mass popularity. With materials from 115 different theaters, the collection spans almost a century, from 1875 to 1972. The highest concentration is in the years 1890 to 1909, with approximately 450 items.

August 11, 1915; d. July 2, 2006) was born in Rochester, NY. He graduated from the University of Rochester in 1937 with distinction with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics; he was also elected to the academic honors society Phi Beta Kappa. In 1941, he moved to Washington, DC, to work in the Army Ordnance Division of the War Department as a research analyst. He left that position in 1954 to restore a house he purchased in Georgetown. Subsequently, in 1956, he joined the National Automobile Dealers Association as a research analyst and worked there until his retirement in 1972. He was an avid musician and concert-goer: he was a talented pianist, and he composed music throughout his life.
