The Harrier Issue 171 THE HARRIER ISSUE 171 THE HARRIER The official Newsletter of Huncote Harriers Athletic Club Issue No. 171 APRIL 2014 THE NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP Probably the best ever turn-out by Huncote Harriers in this annual race. This year the races were hosted in the Midlands and host club, Notts AC, led by Mick Robinson, put on a first class fixture at Wollaton Park. There were 10 races during the afternoon across all age groups from u/13 to senior men and women with a total of some 7700 runners. There were some memorable Leicestershire performances during the afternoon: Gemma Steel looked comfortable winning the Ladies Senior race from her rival Steph Twell (AF&D) and helped Charnwood to second placed team medals; Ben Dijkstra (Leicester Chris Unwin tails former Midland cross country Coritanians) won the boys u/15 race; champion, Phil Nicholls 8455 (Tipton Harriers) Leicester’s Amy Griffiths, the County on the third lap.     FEBRUARY 2005 Nicola’s (s)potty Chase idea - not arf! Nicola Wilde’s outrageous idea to flood the Chevin Chase in a running recreation of 101 Dalmations came to fruition on Boxing Day as dozens of black-spotted, white-suited runners (and spectators) took to the Chevin in the annual and popular multi terrain race. While members of Horsforth Harriers were disguised as spotty dogs for the day, runners from many other clubs, including a small group from as far afield as Morpeth Harriers, also joined in the fun. Big thanks to Rothwell Harriers, Kirkstall Harriers, Pudsey Pacers, and Valley Striders to name but a few, who all had runners dressed as dalmations. Even the ladies race winner Jo Smith of Calder Valley Fell Runners was pictured in the local press with a black and white spotted face! Thanks also to Aire Centre Pacers for allowing us to flood their race with identi- cally clad runners (scorers nightmare!) and to runners and spectators alike for their generosity enabling Nicola to donate over £500 to breast cancer charities. (Aire Centre Pacers made a contribution to the Tsunami Relief charities as their charitable effort from the race). Dawn Gray made a splendid ‘Cruella De Vil’ and was only almost upstaged by the men’s third place finisher‘Chris McTree’! Captains Columns Your captains are a your service.     February 2006 The great and the good... The club’s Annual Presentation night saw the ‘old guard’ begin to be challenged for the silverware by the newer, younger generation of Horsforth Harriers. There were a total of 109 awards handed out (for details of who won what see a full breakdown inside) and while familiar names were on many of the plaques, it was encouraging to see the newer and younger contingent grabbing their share of the spoils. Mark Bendall dominated at the men’s longer distances and ‘young’ Kevin Watson picked up four awards across the M50/M60 sections. Also in the prizes were Jonathan Ervine, Jim Hopkinson, Jon Pickering and Alan Squire, the latter claiming three awards for a season of fine performances. For the ladies, Helen Barber and Marie Hart remained the women to beat but it was heartening to see the likes of Sarah Fotherby, Bev Chaplin, Marianne Rix, Tabby Tyler and Sarah Berry be Sarah Fotherby sets off on the 2005 Abbey Dash.     We Were Faster In My Day - Part 2 John Peters – Blue Cat Technical Ltd – 17th April 2018 In my first blog we saw how the virtual all time men’s UK marathon championships team race was dominated by the 80’s with 1980 just pipping 1985. Firstly, I need to address a steward’s enquiry (well I noticed a mistake in my maths, but its Ok I only do this for a living!), Team 1980 actually won by a massive 2 points from 1985 rather than the 1 point as originally stated. However, this only answers half the question of which lustrum is best (there’s that term again, it means 5 year period for those not fortunate enough to have read my first blog). In true Night of the 10K PBs style, it’s now time for the main event, the women’s race. To solve a current athletics debate, at these fictional championships there is only one possible distance for the women’s race, the same as the men, 26.2 miles. The Teams Teams are created in the same way as for the men, that is the lustrum in which you set your PB. The downside to this is that “women were too fragile to run a marathon before 1980” (that’s a completely made up quote). Based on the UK all time women marathon rankings on Power of 10, no British female ran a marathon before 15th March 1981 (Suzan Morris ran 2:42:12 in Essonne, France). This is not a criticism of Power of 10, who do an outstanding job, I know as a data analyst you can only work with the information available (that reminds me, I must email them my performances as an U17 in the early 90’s).
