He won this event as an M65 on the same virus, whilst Angela Allen finished 10'*^. A single point separated course 5 years ago. the W40 teams as Ireland held on to team gold.

Donna James, Caroline Hewitt and Clare Pauzer closed in for England behind Deasy to get team Silver. Sue Finch, 4th, took Scotland into the picture.

In the Women 45 group Jane Clark had a storming run to finish fourth overall only 38sec adrift of the winner. She might have expected a harder race from Fiona Matheson on her home course.

Another Falkirk Victoria member. Janette Stevenson had a facile win in the W55 race to give Scotland individual gold. Carole Wolstenholme who has set British W60 records over 5km and 5 miles, was well clear. N. Ireland were also without their defending W50 Karen Marshall, apparently suffering from a virus and unable to make it nine in a row.

The Men 40 to 64 , tackled an 8km course in the second race. Dave Taylor led after the first small lap, but at the beginning of the second large circuit Darran Bilton shot up the hill opening up a gap. Spectators were able to follow the unfolding drama at various points as the lead changed. Coming back into view Taylor was closing in as they disappeared up the back with about one kilometre to go. Taylor, the European 1500m and British Masters 5km road champion, raced to a four second win. Afterwards he said he found Darran very strong on the hills. "I put in a spurt with about bOOmetres to go and got away" he commented.

Meanwhile, Oxford's Steven Male had to pull out all the stops t^ hold off the tenacious Irishman. Mick Traynor. after a neck an Jane Clarke 4''' Overall and top neck battle. In a great grandstand finish. Steven took the bronze W45 by just one second. Liking the challenging course, he describing MASTERS ATHLETICS WINTER 2006 it as "having a bit of everything". The Jacobites may have defeated England at the Battle of Falkirk in 1746, but there certainly was no chink in the armour of England's M45 team. You could throw a blanket over them as they came through together after the first circuit, led by Julian Critchlow a former M40 winner, back to form after a frustrating injury period. Peter Hockin from the West Country, Clive Bromwell and Mark Hargreaves were all in there, Malcolm Eustace and Alex Rowe were handily placed behind. Filling the first three individual places, they won the team title, as Neil Thin placed fourth for Scotland.

A decisive and overjoyed M50 winner was MMAC's Greg Wilson as Mike Weedall came through strongly for Wales in 35"' overall. Les Atkinson from the VAA -North East club was third and another stalwart, Stan Owen, Nene Valley, came in fourth. George Simms of Scotland was equally as emphatic winning the M55 race from Ken Moss (England) and Pat O'Shea iMand). After trying for years and not gaining selection for the ^^two years, Malcolm Renyard from Southampton must have thought his chances of ever getting an individual age group win had gone. Shaking his head in disbelief, he is now the British & Irish M60 International Cross-Country Champion. Ireland, led by Frank Reilly second, surprisingly won the team event from Scotland, who was only one point ahead of England. An Open Race follows the international; all reserves and locals get a chance to run over the course. The evening banquet, awards presentation and disco at the "Inchyra Grange Hotel" was a most enjoyable event organised by Scottish Veteran Harriers.

Scottish Veterans Harriers Club would like to thank:

8 MASTERS A THLET/CS WINTER 2006 or commercial sponsorship and we uphold ethical standards universally when it comes to competition. If an 'older' athlete has to take a pharmaceutical drug under medical direction, it would normally be for 'preservation of qualify of life' and not for the reasons of enhancement of athletic performance. By definition, the older we get the more likely it is going to be that we should take prescribed 'medicines' to ensure our quality of life is preserved and longevify is the aim! If WMA are going to take a hard line on this, In particular as far as THERAPEUTIC USE EXEMTIONS are concerned, then our sport has a real problem!

We should consider the implications of what has happened to Neil, particularly in terms of other members and the impact it may have on them in the future.

BMAF should take the lead in what would be an equitable solution to this problem. We have the expertise within B.M.A.F as long as we have die will and as long as U.K.A. can assist us too. I recommend a sub committee should be convened as soon as possible to consider all the implications of this case PAUL as well as the wider issues that may affect our Membership and Masters Athletes throughout the ICKENSON' world. RITE^ I truly believe one of the 'nice men' has been well and truly stitched up and we must try everything possible to assist him , and to make sure this situation does not arise again with anyone competing in Masters' sport. We will make sure that in future all Therapeutic Use Exemption forms are sent through U.K.A. In addition those competing in International Championships will receive anti-doping guidelines from our Overseas Coordinator, with their entry confirmation, and for those in home competitions you also need to make sure that you update your records.

In the New Year details will be sent to all members. We will also under the auspice of U.K.A. have anti-doping road shows at our Indoor and Outdoor championships.

As I have mentioned on the website we are a successful team and therefore we are much more likely to have members selected for testing under normal conditions, or by targeting in European championships where more tests are being carried out.

Finally B.M.A.F. will be looking to set up an anti-doping committee and making representation to W.M.A. in Riccione 2007, based on their recommendations. Our president is overseeing this.

Sarah Gee took the W40 title with 3hr 6min 29sec, over two ^^lutes quicker than her performance in the Flora this year, while taking the silver medal was another W40, Jacqueline Massey.

Third championship entrant home but taking the W35 title was Belinda Davies, who had led home Gee in London. "I was happy with 3:15 today as I hadn't specifically trained for a marathon," Davies admitted.

In her second B.M.A.F championship of the year Margaret Ehrenberg proved that she likes to vary her events as having competed in the Hammer at Birmingham she proved more successful here by taking the W50 title.

W65 Brenda Jones has been collecting B.M.A.F. titles this year like they are going out of fashion with her victory here adding to the 10km, 10-mile and half-marathon already won. It was close to a 'full house' but for 'only' placing second in the 5km event at Norwich. ^^ingdon Marathon Sunday 22 October 2006 BM AF results

19 MASTERS ATHLETICS WINTER 2006 Pete Mulholland points out that there are two new websites Transponder decides BMAF champion! that will be of great interest to master athletes. It then continued with' strong finishes 'one being behind anA , Martin Gasselsberger's www.mastersathletics.net lists track another in front though the one behind is confirmed the ^ performances for all age groups at this time only track events winner. Explanations for this strange situation are then put are covered it is hoped that Hurdles and Field events will follow forward. Starting with, Chips on leading legs, or trailing legs. next year. This is followed by quoting lAAF Rules 164.3 and 165.2, reminding us that it's, ' Athletics Weekly have launched www.athleticsdata.com. which lists ranking list for all groups. Well-done Tim Grose and his THE TORSO THAT COUNTS fellow statisticians. For further explanation of this situation a lack of video evidence, a JUDGE, and the large number of competitors in the OPEN RACE - 3000 plus - made it 'virtually impossible' for a Judge to identify

B.M.A.F. Age Group winners! Hence the Headline - which I had failed to read - Then the Penny dropped! Perhaps next time, when transponders are in use instead ofjudges, ' fast finishers' will remember to thrust forward the leg that is attached to the 'transponder ' instead of dipping. No longer a case of best foot forward, but' chip foot forward '. I believe that U.K.A. stated, when first approache|P^ by B.M.A.F. for recognition, that Veteran or Masters Athletics, is' not in their remit'. 1 can understand why.

A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, with no means of identifying those competing in that Championship, and even if there was, no Judge to see who crossed the line first in a close finish, and from the tone of the write up, no B.M.A.F. Referee to adjudicate on B.M.A.F. matters. U.K.A. Are wise to keep their distance.

26 MASTERS ATHLETICS WINTER 2006 The happiest outcome ofthe sto>y is that Roy met thefuture Mrs Taylor whilst at Shoreham and a happy home life with children and grandchildren ensued. Even the wicket stepmother relented at the end, not to speak ofa bonding with hisfather.

This is a book with plenty of good humour and self-deprecation and well deserving of support.

RAF National Service in Six Movements: by Roy Taylor

Obtainable from: Woodfield Publishing, Babsham Lane, Bognor Regis, West Sussex Many of us have toyed with the idea of writing a book about our P021 5EL life, but few have ever actually managed it. One who has is Roy Taylor, a stalwart of Brighton AC and originally Welwyn AC. Price: £9. 95 + £1. 50 p & p

Like all good storytellers, Roy starts at the beginning of what is, to some CJS/MS 4.11.06 extent, a poignant tale. His mother died when he was seven years of age. As his father was in the Forces, he found himself fostered with a family who were members of a strange religious sect. The Society of Dependents. Not withstanding this, he succeeded in making something of his life in his late teens, although by then he had acquired the archetypal wicked stepmother. Roy had also become hooked on ath^.rics through Welwyn AC and thus when required to complete two the R.A.F he was able to put his athletic ability to good use.

A lightweight at seven and a half stone he was soon able to make a modest contribution to his various stations' athletic squads. Like most young men in similar situations local pubs occur regularly in the narrative. Assigned to be radar operative he moved through a number of Radar establishments, having first undergone the ritual of square bashing under power-mad drill instructors. It is easy for ex-national service men to identify with many of his experiences in whichever arm of the services we did our stint.

Many ofyon will have seen or even competed against the late Derek TurnbulL

His widow Pat has sent me a copy of "Vince Boyles" book about the great man.

You can order online: www.craigprint. co. nz ROY TAYLOR or www, sherwoodforest. co.nz

Roy's ultimate posting was to Truleigh, close by Shoreham in Sussex and happily only some six miles from Brighton. Regular training with Price $48 nz (about £17) Brighton AC enabled him to qualify for his one and only Hertfordshire County CC vest. Over his performances at the inter-counties at Rugby ^^will draw the veil of discretion. Postage and packing $26 nz( about £9)

There are a number of interesting adventures including a failed effort to reach John o" Groats" On a RAF rail warrant".
