PLANNING for a PANDEMIC How MND was prepared for the COVID-19 Pandemic The old adage, “Plan for the worst and hope for the best” has never seemed so relevant. When the COVID-19 pandemic became a reality in March 2020 with Governor DeWine’s order to close Ohio school buildings, Mount Notre Dame was prepared. MND’s Digital Distance Learning Plan was officially enacted on March 18, 2020. The comprehensive plan launched a digital environment in which MND could hold a school day in a non-traditional manner. MND was prepared to effectively teach using this plan as long as necessary, even if that meant not returning to MND’s campus for the remainder of the school year. In developing the plan, MND’s goals were to create a learning environment that propels MND students forward in their college-preparatory curriculum; provide a flexible protocol that allows faculty to tap into their creativity and strengths while leveraging the power of MND’s technologies; and respect the school, faculty and students during implementation. MND’s Digital Distance Learning Plan is based upon three key areas: •Planning - Includes instruction and assessment •Feedback - Allows students and faculty to gauge learning •Support - Allows students to have digital access to teachers as well as MND’s Guidance and Intervention departments Mi’Cayla Pitts ’20 engaing in Digital Distance Learning at her home. There’s no substitute for the face-to-face - Principal Karen Day MND Experience, but we knew that we could make the best of this situation, keep the MND spirit alive and prepare our students for the next steps in their educational journey.” When faced with the unprecedented reality that the Class of 2020 would not be able to experience the traditional end-of-year senior activities or commencement exercises, MND was once again prepared. Tapping into the creativity, dedication and resourcefulness of faculty and staff members, MND was able to thoughtfully plan safe and special events to honor the Class of 2020. 4 mount notre dame developments On April 27, MND held “Cougarbration”, an event that allowed seniors to participate in a scheduled drive-thru in the MND parking lot where they were safely celebrated and cheered. Students remained in their vehicles while they processed through the parking lot. It was an opportunity for them to receive important items such as caps and gowns, senior yard signs, time capsules and other special graduation gifts.

  • Blessed Among Us Sr. Dorothy Stang Martyr of the Amazon (1931–2005)
132 February 12 Blessed Among Us Sr. Dorothy Stang Martyr of the Amazon (1931–2005) On the morning of February 12, 2005, Sr. Dorothy Stang, an American-born nun who had spent forty years in Brazil, set off for a meeting of landless farmers. Along the muddy trail her way was blocked by two hired gunmen who asked whether she carried any weapon. In reply she produced her Bible and began to read the Beatitudes: “Blessed are the poor in spirit . Blessed are the peacemakers.” And then they shot her. Sr. Dorothy, born in Dayton, Ohio, joined the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur out of high school and volunteered in 1966 to work in Brazil. Eventually she was drawn to the remote regions of the Amazon and the cause of poor farmers who were exploited and robbed by rich loggers and cattle barons. She had come to see the connections between defend- ing the rights of the poor and protecting the ecological balance of the rain forest itself. Well into her seventies, she trudged through mud and thick forests to attend prayer services and labor meetings. Her efforts on behalf of the farmers and the imperiled rain forest marked her as an enemy by those who hired her assassins. Her death aroused the government of Brazil and the whole world to the cause of ecology and justice for which she offered her life. “I light a candle and look at Jesus on the cross and ask for the strength to carry the suffering of the people. Don’t worry about my safety.

Parent Teaching Pages February 28, 2021 • 2nd Sunday of Lent Sunday Readings: Genesis 22:1–2,9-13,15–18; Romans 8:31b–34; Mark 9:2–10 Sunday Gospel Background The three Apostles are overjoyed but also confused by Jesus’ Transfiguration. They do not yet understand that this experience is a precursor to Heaven. Jesus shows us that after his suffering and Death on the Cross, there will be a Resurrection. The Transfiguration is a model for Christian living. Jesus shows us that we grow through the sufferings we encounter in this life and we are transformed by them. After this life, there is an infinitely better life awaiting us if we are faithful. Lent gives us the opportunity to grow ever closer to the person Jesus wants us to be. Share Experiences Check off the boxes as you complete each part of the lesson. Pray together Talk about something your child wants to see transformed in the world and invite your child to say a prayer of petition, such as: “Creator God, help us find ways to feed hungry people.” Respond together, Loving God, hear our prayer. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Roger Cunningham, [email protected] , 212-594-7501 Encompass New Opera Theatre presents the World Premiere of Angel of the Amazon May 6 – 22, 2011 At Baryshnikov Arts Center Encompass New Opera Theatre (Nancy Rhodes, Artistic Director and Mara Waldman, Music Director) presents the World Premiere of Angel of the Amazon , a new music drama with libretto and music by Evan Mack at The Jerome Robbins Theater at Baryshnikov Arts Center, 450 West 37 th Street, NYC. Performances begin May 6 and run through May 22. This compelling new work is based on the true story of Sister Dorothy Stang (1931-2005), an American born member of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur order. In 2005, at the age of 73, she was brutally murdered by assassins hired by the owner of a logging company, who felt her passion for the Earth and all of its gifts to be a threat. Angel of the Amazon depicts her life’s work and the events that set her on a path to martyrdom. Sister Dorothy began her mission in the Brazilian rainforest in the early 1970s, eventually becoming a Brazilian citizen. Her life’s work was helping the indigenous farmers make a living by cultivating their land and extracting forest products with minimum impact on the ecosystem. Dot, as she was called by her family, friends, and most locals in Brazil, was extremely outspoken in her efforts on behalf of the poor and the environment. She is often pictured wearing a t-shirt with the slogan A Morte da floresta é o fim da nossa vida, which is Portuguese for “The death of the forest is the end of our life.” It was this outspokenness that brought her into conflict with local landowners and businessmen and eventually resulted in her assassination.
