V8X 3x3 March 30, 1989 PREFACE This'publication is one of a series of documents and reports which outline the natural history, cultural history and recreational themes for the major Provincial Parks located in the southwestern portion of British Columbia. The "Lower Mainland Areaw of B.C. is one of vast geographical and biological diversity ranging fro g1acie.r-covered mountains to the bottom of the world's largest ocean,. and B.C.'s Provincial Parks reflect that incredible spectrum. with such a wealth of resources available to interpret, it is necessary to ensure the major attributes of each specific park are presented to ,the'public in an organized-, non-repetitive fashion throughout the region. TQ achieve this objective an interpretation and information plan was developed for the parks in the region and the major themes/stories of regional significant to be told in each park were identified. A visitor travelling through the provincial parks in the regions should, through our interpretation efforts, appreciate the significant of each one, and collectively'build.onhis or her knowledge of the value and importance overall. This docpnent therefore achieves several important objectives: 1. It outlines the most important natural and cultural history themes Manning'Provincial Park to guide interpretive programs offered to the public. 2. It provides site-specific locations of the park's most important features for use by interpretive planners and master planners. 3. It brings together additional park-specific natural and cultural history information gleaned from a review of past records, files, projects and reports. 4. It identifies information gaps requiring further research, By reviewing the information contained in the 'following pages, the reader should be able to grasp the essence of Manning Park's natural and cultural history which is an important step in appreciating what makes British ~olumbia's Provincial Park System so special. Lichens usually grow much slower than higher plants. Nevertheless, lichens can contribute substantially to biomass production. This review focuses on the lichen symbiosis in general and especially on the model species Lobaria pulmonaria L. Hoffm., which is a large foliose lichen that occurs worldwide on tree trunks in undisturbed forests with long ecological continuity. In comparison to many other lichens, L. pulmonaria is less tolerant to desiccation and highly sensitive to air pollution. The name- giving mycobiont (belonging to the Ascomycota), provides a protective layer covering a layer of the green-algal photobiont (Dictyochloropsis reticulata) and interspersed cyanobacterial cell clusters (Nostoc spec.).     Washington Natural Heritage Program List of Animal Species with Ranks October 2017 The following list of animals known from Washington is complete for resident and transient vertebrates and several groups of invertebrates, including odonates, branchipods, tiger beetles, butterflies, gastropods, freshwater bivalves and bumble bees. Some species from other groups are included, especially where there are conservation concerns. Among these are the Palouse giant earthworm, a few moths and some of our mayflies and grasshoppers. Currently 857 vertebrate and 1,100 invertebrate taxa are included. Conservation status, in the form of range-wide, national and state ranks are assigned to each taxon. Information on species range and distribution, number of individuals, population trends and threats is collected into a ranking form, analyzed, and used to assign ranks.     Snow Survey and Water Supply Bulletin – January 1st, 2021 The January 1st snow survey is now complete. Data from 58 manual snow courses and 86 automated snow weather stations around the province (collected by the Ministry of Environment Snow Survey Program, BC Hydro and partners), and climate data from Environment and Climate Change Canada and the provincial Climate Related Monitoring Program have been used to form the basis of the following report1. Weather October began with relatively warm and dry conditions, but a major cold spell dominated the province in mid-October. Temperatures primarily ranged from -1.5 to +1.0˚C compared to normal. The cold spell also produced early season low elevation snowfall for the Interior. Following the snowfall, heavy rain from an atmospheric river affected the Central Coast and spilled into the Cariboo, resulting in prolonged flood conditions. Overall, most of the Interior received above normal precipitation for the month, whereas coastal regions were closer to normal. In November, temperatures were steady at near normal to slightly above normal and primarily ranged from -0.5 to +1.5˚C through the province. The warmest temperatures relative to normal occurred in the Interior, while the coldest occurred in the Northwest. Precipitation was mostly below normal to near normal (35-105%) with the Northeast / Peace as the driest areas. A few locations, e.g. Prince Rupert and Williams Lake, were above 130% due to a strong storm event early in the month. Temperatures in December were relatively warm across the province, ranging from +1.0 to +5.0˚C above normal.

    MOTHS AND BUTTERFLIES LEPIDOPTERA DISTRIBUTION DATA SOURCES (LEPIDOPTERA) * Detailed distributional information has been J.D. Lafontaine published for only a few groups of Lepidoptera in western Biological Resources Program, Agriculture and Agri-food Canada. Scott (1986) gives good distribution maps for Canada butterflies in North America but these are generalized shade Central Experimental Farm Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0C6 maps that give no detail within the Montane Cordillera Ecozone. A series of memoirs on the Inchworms (family and Geometridae) of Canada by McGuffin (1967, 1972, 1977, 1981, 1987) and Bolte (1990) cover about 3/4 of the Canadian J.T. Troubridge fauna and include dot maps for most species. A long term project on the “Forest Lepidoptera of Canada” resulted in a Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre (Agassiz) four volume series on Lepidoptera that feed on trees in Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Canada and these also give dot maps for most species Box 1000, Agassiz, B.C. V0M 1A0 (McGugan, 1958; Prentice, 1962, 1963, 1965). Dot maps for three groups of Cutworm Moths (Family Noctuidae): the subfamily Plusiinae (Lafontaine and Poole, 1991), the subfamilies Cuculliinae and Psaphidinae (Poole, 1995), and ABSTRACT the tribe Noctuini (subfamily Noctuinae) (Lafontaine, 1998) have also been published. Most fascicles in The Moths of The Montane Cordillera Ecozone of British Columbia America North of Mexico series (e.g. Ferguson, 1971-72, and southwestern Alberta supports a diverse fauna with over 1978; Franclemont, 1973; Hodges, 1971, 1986; Lafontaine, 2,000 species of butterflies and moths (Order Lepidoptera) 1987; Munroe, 1972-74, 1976; Neunzig, 1986, 1990, 1997) recorded to date.

  • Annotated List of the Lepidoptera of Alberta Bowman 1951
    AN ANNOTATED LIST OF THE LEPIDOPTERA OF ALBERTA1.* Abstract This list consists of 1825 species and varieties of Lepidoptera which have been taken in Alberta. Of these, 657 are records of captures in the hitherto almost completely neglected Microlepidoptera. Though few specialists on this continent have studied the taxonomy of this large group, those who have done so in certain families have generously assisted in classifying the species which are recorded. Unfortunately, in a few families it has been ilnpossible to obtain this assistance. Despite the omissions this necessitates, the list constitutes the most comprehensive catalogue of Microlepidoptera which has, up to the present, been attempted for any province in the Donlinion. Arrangement and nomenclature are based on McDunnough's Check List of the Lepidoptera of Catzada alzd the United States, published in 1938 and 1939. Proposed modifications in nomenclature, presented in subsequent publications, are substituted if they appear to be gaining general acceptance. Locality records for captures are presented by a system of ecological areas of which the chief climatological and biological characteristics are briefly described. Introductory Professional entomologists are very greatly aided in the pursuit of their lifeworlc with its practical objectives by the unstinted and critical industry of competent amateurs. Such amateurs have gathered a vast mass of data upon the distribution and the relative abundance of various insects and have recorded valuable information on the biology of the groups to which they For personal use only. have devoted their particular attention. In no field of entbmological endeavor has this been more in evidence than it is in the study of Lepidoptera.
