Its impetus was the New Europe Prize for Higher Education and Research, awarded in 1993 to Professor Pleşu by a group of six institutes for advanced study (the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford, the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, the National Humanities Center, Research Triangle Park, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences, Wassenaar, the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences, Uppsala, and the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin). Since 1994, the NEC community of fellows and alumni has enlarged to over 700 members. In 1998 New Europe College was awarded the prestigious Hannah Arendt Prize for its achievements in setting new standards in research and higher education. New Europe College is officially recognized by the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research as an institutional structure for postgraduate studies in the humanities and social sciences, at the level of advanced studies. Focused primarily on individual research at an advanced level, NEC offers to young Romanian scholars and academics in the fields of humanities and social sciences, and to the foreign scholars invited as fellows appropriate working conditions, and provides an institutional framework with strong international links, acting as a stimulating environment for interdisciplinary 7 N.E.C. Ştefan Odobleja Program Yearbook 2017-2018 dialogue and critical debates. The academic programs NEC coordinates, and the events it organizes aim at strengthening research in the humanities and social sciences and at promoting contacts between Romanian scholars and their peers worldwide. Academic programs currently organized and coordinated by NEC: • NEC Fellowships (since 1994) Each year, up to ten NEC Fellowships open both to Romanian and international outstanding young scholars in the humanities and social sciences are publicly announced. The Fellows are chosen by the NEC international Academic Advisory Board for the duration of one academic year, or one term. They gather for weekly seminars to discuss the progress of their research, and participate in all the scientific events organized by NEC. The Fellows receive a monthly stipend, and are given the opportunity of a research trip abroad, at a university or research institute of their choice. At the end of their stay, the Fellows submit papers representing the results of their research, to be published in the New Europe College Yearbooks. • Ştefan Odobleja Fellowships (since October 2008) The Fellowships given in this program are supported by the Executive Unit for Financing Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation, and are meant to complement and enlarge the core fellowship program. The definition of these fellowships, targeting young Romanian researchers, is identical with those in the NEC Program, in which the Odobleja Fellowships are integrated. • UEFISCDI Award Program (since October 2016) The outstanding scientific activity of the NEC was formally recognized in Romania in 2016, when the Executive Unit for Financing Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation organized a competition for institutions coordinating ERC projects. New Europe College applied and won two institutional prizes for coordinating, at that time, two ERC grants. A part of this prize was used to create the UEFISCDI Award Program, consisting of fellowships targeting young 8 NEW EUROPE COLLEGE international researchers, also meant to complement and enlarge the core fellowship program. • The Pontica Magna Fellowship Program (since October 2015) This Fellowship Program, supported by the VolkswagenStiftung (Germany), invites young researchers, media professionals, writers and artists from the countries around the Black Sea, but also beyond it (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine), for a stay of one or two terms at the New Europe College, during which they have the opportunity to work on projects of their choice. The program welcomes a wide variety of disciplines in the fields of humanities and social sciences. Besides hosting a number of Fellows, the College organizes within this program workshops and symposia on topics relevant to the history, present, and prospects of this region. This program is therefore strongly linked to the former Black Sea Link Fellowships. • The Pontica Magna Returning Fellows Program (since March 2016) In the framework of its Pontica Magna Program, New Europe College offers alumni of the Black Sea Link and Pontica Magna Fellowship Programs the opportunity to apply for a research stay of one or two months in Bucharest. The stay should enable successful applicants to refresh their research experience at NEC, to reconnect with former contacts, and to establish new connections with current Fellows. The Pontica Magna Returning Fellows Program targets young researchers, media professionals, writers and artists from the countries around the Black Sea: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine. • The Gerda Henkel Fellowship Program (since March 2017) This Fellowship Program, developed with the support of Gerda Henkel Stiftung (Germany), invites young researchers and academics working in the fields of humanities and social sciences (in particular archaeology, art history, historical Islamic studies, history, history of law, history of science, prehistory and early history) from Afghanistan, Belarus, China (only Tibet and Xinjiang Autonomous Regions), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan, for a stay of one or two terms at the New Europe College, during which they will have the opportunity to work on projects of their choice. 9 N.E.C. Ştefan Odobleja Program Yearbook 2017-2018 • How to Teach Europe Fellowship Program (since April 2017) This Program, supported by the Robert Bosch Foundation and a Private Foundation from Germany, introduces a new and innovative Fellowship module at the Centre for Advanced Study (CAS), Sofia, and the New Europe College (NEC), Bucharest. Beyond the promotion of outstanding individual researchers, the Program focuses on the intersection of fundamental research and higher education. The joint initiative seeks to identify and bring together bright and motivated young and established university professors from South-eastern Europe to dedicate themselves for a certain amount of time

In Book III, questions concerning the incarnation of Christ were examined by generation after generation of scholars. The changing nature of the tabulae of questions mirrors the shifting interest of scholarly dis, cussion. A significant phenomenon in the thirteenth century was the gradual intrusion of questions about Mary into Christological discussions on the Incarnation.     Abstract of Monia Mancinelli’s work (RAMUS PhD - curriculum FITMU, XXIX cicle – XV o. s.) Title: “The Principle of Individuation in Landulph Caracciolus’s commentary on the Sentences. Text and study”. This research is aimed at reconstructing and studying the sections of Landulph Caracciolus’s commentary on the Sentences dedicated to the principle of individuation. Landulph Caracciolus is a Franciscan friar coming from Naples who lived in the XIVth century and who lectured the Sentences at Paris in the academic year 1318-1319. Recently, Christopher D. Schabel has underlined that, despite its widespread popularity and the important context of its composition, however, Landulph’s commentary on the Sentences has largely been neglected. From 1999 Christopher D. Schabel and Russell L. Friedman have been promoting a larger attention to Landulph’s commentary, showing that the Franciscan friar can be an interesting mean to trace the story of the reception of Duns Scotus and Peter Auriol’s doctrines at the University of Paris during the first twenty years of the XIVth century. The question of the principle of the individuation is about the research of the existence and the identification of the element responsible for both ontological determination and knowledge of the single entity. The first chapter of this work shows that the question explodes during the XIIIth century thanks to the Aristotelian corpus and to Avicenna’s and Averroes’s works, and many thinkers try to offer a personal solution to the problem, offering six main competing theories: 1) real natures are individual as such (William of Ware); 2) double negation (Henry of Ghent); 3) actual existence (maybe Roger Bacon, Peter of Falco, Peter of Alverny or Robert Kilwardby); 4) the collection of personal accidents/properties (ascribed to Boethius), and particularly quantity (Godfrey of Fontaines and Thomas Sutton); 5) matter (Albert the Great, Thomas of Aquin and Giles of Rome); 6) respectus ad agens (unknown).

"IN the year of the Lord 1224, in the time of the Lord Pope Honorius, in the same year, that is, in which the Rule of the blessed Francis was by him con- firmed, and in the eighth year of the Lord King Henry, son of John, on the Tuesday after the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, which that year fell upon a Sunday, the Friars Minor first arrived in England, land- ing at Dover. They were four clerics and five lay- brethren."1 Thus opens brother Thomas of Eccleston's narrative " Of the coming of the Friars Minor [or Franciscans] into England,' compiled probably about forty years after that first landing. At recent celebrations of the seventh hundred anniversary of the event, Eccles- ton's picturesque account of the heroic pioneers pressing on to Canterbury, from thence to London, and so even- tually to Oxford and other important towns, has been re-told. There is no need to linger, therefore, about those first guest-houses on the road, around the school- house fire at Canterbury, or the kitchen fire at Salisbury, where ill-fed and weary friars made merry over the wretched beer-dregs, or in the little cells erected in Corn- hill with their lining of dried grass.     There was one exception to the binary division of the Romanian art scene, namely Ion Bitzan, an artist who became one of the most frequently ‘exported’ Romanian artists of the Ceaus¸escu era. His international career began in 1964 when he was awarded a fellowship in Italy. Within two years, he had two shows in Poland (in Poznan´ in 1966 and in Sopot in 1967), exhibitions in The Hague and Amsterdam, a fellowship from the Stedelijk Museum and shows in New York, Paris and Northern Ireland, as well as visiting lectureships in the United States (New York, Washington dc, San Francisco and Philadelphia).51 Bitzan’s work during the 1960s and ’70s was seemingly in a state of suspended animation. In the 1950s the artist, who scrupulously avoided Socialist Realist formulas (he began showing in 1953), produced more or less conventional still lifes and landscapes that incorporated elements of abstraction.52 In 1964 he had an opportunity to visit the Venice Biennale and to see Robert Rauschenberg’s work (Rauschenberg won the Grand Prix that year). Kristine Stiles writes that Rauschenberg’s exhibition made a lasting impression on the Romanian artist, prompting him to investigate object art, collage, assemblage and other neo-avant-garde modes of production over the course of the 1960s.53 These experiments produced such works as Small Sacks (1969), Generator of Images (1976) and Towers (1977–8). Those were not radical statements exploring the identity of an artwork as an object, a subject discussed by Arthur Danto in relation to Pop art, in particular Andy Warhol.54 Bitzan’s works (and the majority of similar East European neo-avant-garde experiments) were implicated in poetics that underscored the importance of the creative function understood within traditional aesthetic categories.

Fundaţia Art Encounters şi‑a asumat rolul de ferment al acestei stări, reuşind să creeze punţi: spre trecut—amintind vocaţia Timişoarei pentru mişcarea novatoare, de avangardă, a anilor ’60–’70, şi a înce‑ putului anilor ’90–2000; spre prezent, aducând arta de valoare în apropierea fiecăruia dintre noi; spre viitor, oferind tinerilor creatori şansa de a‑şi investiga propriile mijloace de exprimare, de a experimenta noi practici artistice; în spaţiu, aducând Aradul mai aproape de Timişoara, pe harta artei, dar şi, ceea ce este cel mai important, punţi spre ceilaţi, spre public, ca principal destinatar al artei. Implicată puternic în social, arta contemporană înregistrează pulsaţiile vremii. Este deschisă spre lume, iese pe stradă, coboară în spaţii nepretenţioase. Provoacă reacţie şi participare. De aceea, una dintre ţin‑ tele evenimentului Art Encounters este să ofere publicului oportunitatea de a se întâlni cu arta, de a experimenta, de a participa la o comunicare activă cu artişti, curatori, directori de muzee şi critici de artă, în punctul de intersecţie al scenei artistice româneşti cu cea internaţională.

  • Lecture and Symposium: Contemporary Central European Art
    Lecture and Symposium: Contemporary Central European Art This year, 2014, is V4 plus Japan Exchange Year. “V4” refers to the Visegrád Four, a regional cooperative bloc of four Central European nations: Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. In honor of this year of international exchange, we organized a lecture and symposium on the arts of the V4 nations and their neighbors and of Japan, focusing on how the arts have progressed in each of these places and what role they have played in society, while taking into account each country’s specific historical background. The lecture and symposium were held in Kyoto and Tokyo, and the Kyoto event was in two parts. The first, primarily dedicated to Tadeusz Kantor, one of Poland’s most renowned 20th-century artists, and the Cricoteka archive of Kantor material that reopened after renovation this past autumn, aimed to shed light on the significance of his accomplishments. This portion of the event was organized in part by the Archival Research Center at Kyoto City University of Arts, and also incorporated the fourth meeting of the Tadeusz Kantor Research Society. The second part consisted of talks by each of the curators from the V4 and surrounding nations that are currently in Japan as part of a Japan Foundation project to invite overseas curators, highlighting and comparing the specific dilemmas and conflicts each country faced after World War II and how they fit into the Cold War power structure, and examining the ways in which this legacy continues to affect each nation today. In Tokyo, the central European curators invited by the Japan Foundation gave similar reports on their countries’ histories and circumstances, and a general overview and discussion took place with specialists in central European art taking part.
