While numeric approaches are successful, analytic tools and conceptual frameworks are largely lacking. Using an analogy with electrostatics, and building on recent developments in a nonlinear geometric formu- lation of elasticity, we develop a formalism that maps the elastic problem into that of nonlinear interaction of elastic charges. This approach offers an intuitive conceptual framework, qualitatively explaining the linear response, the onset of mechanical instability and aspects of the post-instability state. Apart from intuition, the formalism also quantitatively reproduces full numeric simulations of several prototypical structures. Possible applications of the tools developed in this work for the study of ordered and disordered porous mechanical metamaterials are discussed. I. This rubber fails prematurely due to heat buildup caused by the hysteretic nature of elastomers. It is therefore desired to replace this elastomer by a meta-material that has equivalent nonlinear deformation characteristics without this primary failure mode. A meta-material is an artificial material in the form of a periodic structure that exhibits behavior that differs from its constitutive material. After a thorough literature review, topology optimization was found as the only method used to design meta-materials. Further investigation determined topology optimization as an infeasible method to design meta-materials with the targeted nonlinear deformation characteristics. -

Marsden1 and Mathieu Desbrun Abstract. This paper shows that the stress field in the classical theory of continuum mechanics may be taken to be a covector-valued differential two-form. The balance laws and other funda- mental laws of continuum mechanics may be neatly rewritten in terms of this geometric stress. A geometrically attractive and covariant derivation of the balance laws from the principle of energy balance in terms of this stress is presented. Mathematics Subject Classification (2000). Keywords. Continuum mechanics, elasticity, stress tensor, differential forms. 1. Motivation This paper proposes a reformulation of classical continuum mechanics in terms of bundle-valued exterior forms. Our motivation is to provide a geometric description of force in continuum mechanics, which leads to an elegant geometric theory and, at the same time, may enable the development of space-time integration algorithms that respect the underlying geometric structure at the discrete level. In classical mechanics the traditional approach is to define all the kinematic and kinetic quantities using vector and tensor fields. For example, velocity and traction are both viewed as vector fields and power is defined as their inner product, which is induced from an appropriately defined Riemannian metric. On the other hand, it has long been appreciated in geometric mechanics that force should not be viewed as a vector, but rather a one-form. -

Some insights from total collapse S´ergio B. Volchan Abstract We discuss the Sundman-Weierstrass theorem of total collapse in its histor- ical context. This remarkable and relatively simple result, a type of stability criterion, is at the crossroads of some interesting developments in the gravi- tational Newtonian N-body problem. We use it as motivation to explore the connections to such important concepts as integrability, singularities and typ- icality in order to gain some insight on the transition from a predominantly quantitative to a novel qualitative approach to dynamical problems that took place at the end of the 19th century. With a rich and fascinating history, 1 it had a pivotal role in the very creation of modern science. He made important discoveries in fields as diverse as infinitesimal calculus and graph theory. He also introduced much of the modern mathematical terminology and notation, particularly for mathematical analysis, such as the notion of a mathematical function.[2] He is also renowned for his work in mechanics, fluid dynamics, optics, and astronomy. Euler spent most of his adult life in St. Petersburg, Russia, and in Berlin, Prussia. He is considered to be the preeminent mathematician of the 18th century, and one of the greatest of all time. He is also one of the most prolific mathematicians ever; his collected works fill 60–80 quarto volumes. We discuss how the phase space volume, the number of states and the elementary-cell volume of a system of non-interacting N particles, changes when an interaction is switched on and the system becomes or evolves to a system of correlated non-Boltzmann particles and derives the appropriate expressions. Even if we assume that nowadays the volume of the elementary cell is equal to the cube of the Planck constant, h3, at least for quantum systems, we show that there is a correspondence between different values of h in the past, with important and, in principle, measurable cosmological and astrophysical consequences, and systems with an effective smaller (or even larger) phase-space volume described by non-extensive generalized statistics.
