This Community Needs Vinegar and Will Require “This community needs vinegar and will require spirituous liquors for washing and for health, and it will be right and proper for the city to continue its sale as it has done and make a profit.” – Brigham Young, August 11, 1865, addressing the city council on the issue of liquor in Salt Lake City “The exclusive Mormon refresher; Valley Tan is a kind of whisky, or first cousin to it; is of the Mormon invention and manufactured only in Utah. Traditions say it is made of (imported) fire and brimstone. If I re-member rightly, no public drinking saloons were allowed in the Kingdom by Brigham Young, and no private drinking permitted among the faithful, except they confined themselves to Valley Tan.” – Mark Twain, 1871 As legend has it, during the late 1800’s, Salt Lake City was so inundated with prospectors, soldiers, ladies of the night and other people of ill-repute, the blocks between 200 South and 400 South, on what would later be called Main Street (officially designated Main St. in 1906), was given to these gentiles to house the saloons, breweries, billiards clubs and parlor houses. Distilleries were also numerous in the city. Before 1870, there were an estimated 37 distilleries operated in Salt Lake City, all of them run by Mormons, including Brigham Young. As a matter of fact, Brigham Young has 235 charges on record over 10 years from the liquor store located near the inter-section of 200 South and Main Street. That’s two purchases a month for 10 years straight for the Prophet. This area between 200 South and 400 South was given the moniker by none other than Brigham Young himself, and was known as Whiskey Street. • To Many Beer Lovers, Christian Monks
The history of monks and brewing To many beer lovers, Christian monks are the archetypes of brewers. It’s not that monks invented beer: Archeologists find it in both China and Egypt around 5000 B.C., long before any Christian monks existed. And it’s not that the purpose of monks is to brew beer: Their purpose is to seek and to serve God, through a specific form of spiritual life. But if monks did not invent beer, and brewing is not their defining vocation, they did play a major role in Western brewing from at least the second half of the first millennium. Let’s take a broad look at how. First, some background. Christian monasticism has its formal roots in the fourth century, when the Roman Empire was still at its height. The Empire suffered serious decline during the fifth century, the era in which St. Benedict lived (c. 480 - March 21, 547). As the social structure of the Roman Empire crumbled, monasteries organized under the Rule of Benedict emerged as centers of agriculture, lodging, education, literature, art, etc. When Charlemagne established the Holy Roman Empire in the year 800, he relied on monasteries to help weave its social and economic infrastructure – and he promoted the Rule of Benedict as the standard for monastic organization. Against this brief sketch of history, we can begin to observe the relationship between monks and brewing. In ancient days, within the Roman Empire as throughout the world, brewing was typically done in the home. This practice carried into monasteries, which had to provide drink and nourishment for the monks, as well as for guests, pilgrims, and the poor.

Port Dundas was one of the founding members of the grain distillers’ conglomerate DCL. Port Dundas later went on to merge with its neighbouring distillery, Cowlairs and another one in 1902, Dundashill. Port Dundas produced grain whisky for many blended whisky brands owned by Diageo such as, Johnnie Walker, J&B, Bell's, Black & White, Vat 69, Haig and White Horse. The site would produce an astonishing 39 million litres of spirit each year before it was shut indefinitely. Sadly after a century of distilling, in 2010 Diageo made the decision to focus their efforts on grain production and expaned Cameronbridge side, and in 2011 production ceased and the site was demolished. • Mt. Pleasant Brewery Mt. Pleasant
Mt. Pleasant Brewery Mt. Pleasant Raspberry Wheat Ale Stand back. This is a beer brewed with raspberries, not a raspberry beer. The real raspberry juice we use adds something special to this wheat ale rather than taking something away. It can be, and is, enjoyed by all types of beer drinkers. It especially pairs well with fruit salads or just about any type of dessert. Or, consider it a dessert all on its own; who doesn't enjoy beer for dessert? And, just because this beer has fruit, don't think it is some powder-puff beer. Even the most rugged mountain man will enjoy this one. ABV - 5.6% English Brown Ale Welcome to the Dark Side. But, don't let the name fool you, there's nothing disgusting about this brew! It has turned many unsuspecting drinkers on to the dark side of beer. Its malty richness stands on its own but also pairs up nicely to your favorite burger, with steak and potatoes, or if you feel daring, try matching it up with a sweet dessert. Don't blame us, though, when you find yourself completely converted to the dark side...of beer, that is. ABV - 6.0% Sacred Gruit Ale What is gruit you might ask? Gruit is a blend of herbs that brewers added to their beer in the renaissance times if not before. Herbs are an essential ingredient in beer, both as a preservative and to counterbalance the bitterness and flavoring. Herbs were the only thing used prior to the extensive use of hops.

  • The Ranking of the World's Million-Case Spirits Brands 2019
THE RANKING OF THE WORLD’S MILLION-CASE SPIRITS BRANDS 2019 001 Cover DI MILLIONAIRES 2019 FINAL.indd 1 04/06/2019 14:58 The millionaires’ JUNE 2019 DRINKSINT.COM 3 COMMENT The volume game Regardless of Trump’s tariff wars, Brexit and other socio-economic issues, the spirits industry is thriving. And once again The Millionaires’ Club bears witness to the movements of million-case spirits brands all over the globe. Ninety-two of the 153 millionaire brands listed in the 2019 supplement demonstrate an increase in volumes, so the industry shows no signs of slowing down. The biggest volume players are always from Asia due to the huge populations and brand loyalty in major markets, with soju’s Jinro now boasting 87m cases. But it’s also been fascinating to see Diageo’s Indian brandy Men’s Club virtually double in growth despite it showing decline over the previous four years. Looking at Europe, Martell has had a great year. A huge 18% growth shows how cognac is returning to its former glory in terms of international sales and the same can almost be said for vodka in the US as it appears the market is no longer in free-fall, with many of the big players returning to growth. It’s possible that volume sales will dwindle in importance as future generations of consumers continue to drink less but better – quality over quantity. The assets may shrink and the players may change, but this game of volumes isn’t going to end any time soon.
