| 5 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time An Invitation to Pass Through the Narrow Door and Return Home

There is a historic site in Ireland called the Rock of Cashel. It is the site of the conversion of the Kings of Munster by St. Patrick in the 5th century and it was traditionally the stronghold and seat of government of the kings of Munster. In 1101, King O’Brien donated the stronghold to the Church and it became a cathedral and the resi- dence of the bishop. It is a remarkable blend of ancient Irish/Celtic, Gaelic, Norman and Medieval architecture including round towers, high crosses, the famous ’s chapel, and a cathedral. In Europe- an history it is a unique and impressive architectural gem, even if it is now mostly in a ruined state.

However, as impressive as this historic building is, the most interesting aspect is an outside stone staircase that makes it’s way up to a doorway. At one time this doorway would have led into an upper gallery that overlooked the sanctuary of the church. People standing there, or kneeling there, could see the priest or bishop celebrate Mass, but the people in the nave could not see them nor could the people on the gallery see the people in the church. Normally such a hidden gallery would be for important people, like the king or queen, or high-ranking nobles, but that wasn’t the case in Cashel. The fact is that this space was reserved for the most despised, feared, and repulsive members of the community. In fact, they weren’t even considered members of the community, they were outcasts, the shunned, the abandoned; they were the lepers.

These poor people could make their way to the chapel by a hidden road, climb the outside stair- case, as they could not enter in the Church with regular people, and they stood in this hidden gallery so that people would not have to look upon them. It was impossible to receive commun- ion (unless there was a priest suffering the same disease to give it to them) for it was believed that the disease was highly contagious. And yet, as awful as this was and as awful as all this sounds, there was still a place in the church for even the lepers. They entered through a narrow door – but they did enter.

Today, in our community, there are many Catholics who have been alienated from the commu- nity of faith for one reason or another. This has always been the case throughout our history as the Church. Yet, despite this, the Church still allowed people to participate in the life of faith accord- ing to the level that they could. So, if a person was a notorious sinner, his/her participation was limited – but not excluded. A person could continue to go to Mass, pray, be involved in the de- vout life of the faithful, raise their children in the faith and in the community. For most, the only re- striction was the reception of Holy Communion.

(Continued on Page 7)

6 | Our Lady of Victory Parish 21st SundayHappening in Ordinary at OLV Time

Before the Second Vatican Council there was, probably, an over emphasis on not receiving Holy Communion unless you were in a “perfect” state of grace, which was almost impossible to assess, so many people only went to Communion very seldomly. The result was that at most Masses only the priest received Communion (worthy or not) and people generally became spectators in the Eucharistic mystery. Nevertheless, they still felt like they belonged, and they did – the Church made space for us.

After the Second Vatican Council the opposite is true and there has been a definite over empha- sis on the necessity to receive Communion “in order,” some hold, for the celebration of the Eu- charist “to be complete.” This is not true, but the impact of this has been to make people feel they don’t belong at Mass because they aren’t receiving Communion so, in a sense, they feel what’s the point. While it is true that it would be better to be in a state of grace so we can re- ceive Communion, and in a state of life that is not contrary to the law/teaching of God and the Church (such as irregular marriages, or with regard to the use of artificial contraception), to be- long to the Church, the community, and the Body of Christ, is more than the ability and disposi- tion to receive Holy Communion at Mass. The truth is that even those who break the Church’s law still belong or are connected to the Church – although in an imperfect way. Once a Catholic, always a Catholic – right! This is because the seal of Baptism can’t be taken away and if that is the case – saints and sinners, we are still related to the Church. And the Church is still called to be a good Mother to Her children.

Mass is primarily about the worship of God and, at the same time, the building up of the commu- nity of the Body of Christ and the individual Christian. We participate according to our particular calling in life, to the best of our ability, and to the level that is appropriate to our spiritual state in life and relationship with God. We are all called to worship God even if we can’t receive every- thing God wants to give us, even if we are unworthy, and even if we live contrary to His laws. Alt- hough, our worship may be imperfect it is still an offering to God and in God’s eyes it still has val- ue.

It is true that the Mass is the source and summit of all Christian life, but the reception of Holy Com- munion does not exhaust all aspects of Christian life and witness. The life of the Church, parish, community, and the individual Catholic has more elements and most of us can participate fully in most of them. So you can’t go to Holy Communion, but you can go to Mass, you can participate in devotions, listen to the preaching, form your children in the faith, participate in social and reli- gious groups, support the school, the mission of the Church, March for Life, feed the poor, support the missions, and pray daily. Because we are estranged does not mean that we must abandon the faith altogether. And the Church should not abandon us. After all – at times we made space even for the lepers. So, we do what we can as best we can.

I would rather have all Catholics in the Church, attending Mass, participating in the life of Christ, listening to the Gospel, building up the community, sharing the life of faith, according to the level they can, rather than abandon the faith altogether. After all, if our people abandon the Church that means their children and grandchildren for generations may be lost.

| 7 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

So, to all of you who have left the Church, but want to come back, I invite you to come back and join us to the best of your ability and according to what is appropriate for your state of life with God. I will help you figure out what is best for you. If you are a parishioner and member of the community and know someone in this situation, a son or daughter, brother or sister, mother or father, or friend, give them this message from me. I’m not saying that I can change the teaching of the Church, in fact, I love the teaching of the Church, but I want you to be part of the Church in so far as you can even if that is imperfect. Believe it or not – the Church wants you, needs you, and even loves you, imperfections and all. A good shepherd searches for the lost - let’s start there. The door is already narrow, and I don’t want to make it narrower.

There is a great image of Pope Saint John Paul II standing at a narrow door. The door is the Door of No Return in the House of Slaves on Gorée Island off the Coast of Senegal, West Africa. Many slaves, men, women and children, passed through this door to a cruel life of bondage and misery. Jesus offers us anoth- er door – a door to life and grace. Jesus knows we are, all of us, imperfect, sinners in need of salvation, that’s why we have a Church who’s mission it is to go out and search for the lost. Have courage, walk through the narrow door.

New Stature of St. Patrick and

New Candle Shrine

Our new statue of St. Patrick is a gift to Our Lady of Victory Church from Fr. Ben and his parents Gerry and Martha who live in Ireland. St. Patrick, the Apostle of Ireland, was a great evangelizer and we pray that he will help us in our efforts to evangelize our community and culture. St. Patrick, pray for us.

Children’s Playground As you have probably noticed there is a new children’s playground in Field 5. This playground is part of the 175th Legacy Pro- ject undertaken by Fr. Reutter and the Lega- cy team. Thanks to all those who contribut- ed to make the project a reality including the donors to the 175th Legacy Project, the Athletic Association, and the PTO. A special word of thanks to Andy Spinney for his management, oversight, and determination in getting this project off the ground, Photo by: Randi Hom

Sacred Heart Candle Shrine There is also a new candle stand at the statue of the Sacred Heart in the parking lot vestibule of the Church. This candle stand was in the basement of the church and Fr. Ben repainted it for renewed use here at Victory. According to Fr. Ben you can never have enough candles. It is said that Fr. Andy Umberg, parish priest of St. Joe’s, North Bend, once commented that he was going to have this inscription written on the gravestone of Fr. Ben: “Here lies Fr. Ben, he never extinguished a candle and he never silenced a bell.”
