Aishwarya Rai and India’s leading singers felicitated Clean India champions at India Today Safaigiri Awards 2106 By : INVC Team Published On : 3 Oct, 2016 12:00 AM IST INVC NEWS New Delhi, Leading artists – Mika Singh, Adnan Sami, Sukhwinder Singh, Kailash Kher, Shalmali Kholgade, Shilpa Rao, Rekha Bhardwaj, Hans Raj Hans & Himesh Reshammiya spread the message of Safaigiri The India Today Group announced the 2nd edition of the “India Today Safaigiri Awards 2016” - a platform that showcased and felicitated the pioneering eﬀorts of those who are leading the change in cleanliness. This is in continuation to the ﬁrst edition that was launched in 2015, one year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi nominated Mr. Aroon Purie, Chairman and Editor in Chief, India Today Group to be a Clean India advocate. The event was held on 2nd October, the second anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan launch and the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. India Today Safaigiri Awards & Singathon was a day long event that got musicians together to celebrate the SAFAIGIRI movement. The biggest names in music came together to spread the “SAFAI KI DHUN”. Bollywood actor Aishwarya Rai & M. Venkaiah Naidu, Union Minister of Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Information & Broadcasting were the key note speakers at the India Today Safarigiri Awards. They also presented the awards to the Clean India Champions. CHAPTER 14 DANCE-OFF, OR A BATTLE FOR THE FUTURE Dance Reality Shows in India PALLABI CHAKRAVORTY Hindu mythology tells us that a most reasonable method of settling an argument is a dance-off. The story involves two of the most powerful Hindu deities, Shiva and Kali (who are husband and wife). Once they clashed over territorial dominance of the Thillai forest in the southern part of India. Kali was the patron goddess of the forest and the temple within it. But Shiva, following his two devotees who wanted to worship him in the temple (in the form of his abstract representation called the Shiva lingam), came to dance in the forest. This basically meant that Shiva wanted to occupy the forest and oust Kali. Kali refused to leave and challenged Shiva to enter a dance competition with her on the condition that the loser would leave the forest. Lord Vishnu presided as the judge. Kali (the goddess of Shakti, or power, who is often shown naked in Hindu iconog raphy, standing on the chest of her consort Shiva, prostrated beneath her) danced fear lessly. She matched Shiva’s every move and every posture with ease and grace. Shiva, the cosmic dancer of the universe, danced his tandava nritya (the cyclic dance of cre ative destruction) with fierce intensity. They were unrelenting. They danced for days and nights, but no one won. Then Shiva performed a transgressive act. He cheated. He lifted one of his legs high above his head in what classical dance parlance calls ananda tandavam (the dance of bliss).
