  • Engagement: Coptic Christian Revival and the Performative Politics of Song
THE POLITICS OF (DIS)ENGAGEMENT: COPTIC CHRISTIAN REVIVAL AND THE PERFORMATIVE POLITICS OF SONG by CAROLYN M. RAMZY A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Carolyn Ramzy (2014) Abstract The Performative Politics of (Dis)Engagment: Coptic Christian Revival and the Performative Politics of Song Carolyn M. Ramzy A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Music, University of Toronto 2014 This dissertation explores Coptic Orthodox political (dis)engagement through song, particularly as it is expressed through the colloquial Arabic genre of taratil. Through ethnographic and archival research, I assess the genre's recurring tropes of martyrdom, sacrifice, willful withdrawal, and death as emerging markers of community legitimacy and agency in Egypt's political landscape before and following the January 25th uprising in 2011. Specifically, I explore how Copts actively perform as well as sing a pious and modern citizenry through negations of death and a heavenly afterlife. How do they navigate the convergences and contradictions of belonging to a nation as minority Christian citizens among a Muslim majority while feeling that they have little real civic agency? Through a number of case studies, I trace the discursive logics of “modernizing” religion into easily tangible practices of belonging to possess a heavenly as well as an earthly nation. I begin with Sunday Schools in the predominately Christian and middle-class neighborhood of Shubra where educators made the poetry of the late Coptic Patriarch, Pope Shenouda III, into taratil and drew on their potentials of death and withdrawal to reform a Christian moral interiority and to teach a modern and pious Coptic citizenry.

  • The Political Ontology of Islamic Democracy: an Ontological Narrative of Contemporary Muslim Political Thought
The Political Ontology of Islamic Democracy: An Ontological Narrative of Contemporary Muslim Political Thought Halil Ibrahim Yenigun Istanbul, Turkey Master of Arts, Texas Tech University, 2003 Bachelor of Arts, Boğaziçi University, 2000 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Politics University of Virginia August, 2013 ABSTRACT The primary focus of my dissertation is the trajectory of the democratic discourse in the post-Afghani era of Muslim political thought, in particular among the reformist (islahi) current. Toward this end, I situate my comparative political theory within the emerging genre of “political ontology,” which I deploy as an analytical device. More specifically, I seek to demonstrate that the shifting attitudes toward democracy over time among contemporary Muslim thinkers can be better grasped by approaching each of the selected thinkers’ political theories as a constellation of ontological, ethical, and political dimensions. Accordingly, the first part presents several new themes that have received substantial interest in recent political theory. I dedicate each chapter to a specific genre of political ontology, political theology, and radical democracy. Having laid the ground for my ontological narrative, the second part analyzes the political theories of Jamaladdin Afghani (d. 1897), Sayyid Qutb (d. 1966), Fazlur Rahman (d. 1985), and such current liberal Muslim thinkers as Abdelwahab El-Affendi, Khaled Abou El Fadl, Nader Hashemi, and Abdullahi An-Na‘im. While I analyze their political theories as ontopolitical constellations, I seek to show that each one’s approach to democracy or self- government is prefigured by his conception of God as well as how they conceive of the relationship between the Muslim self and the “other,” the rest of creation, and the revealed text (viz., the Qur’an).

Prof. Hüseyin Alptekin February 2015, 136 pages Kurdish issue has been one of the most important and problematic topics in Turkish politics. Since the foundation of the Turkish Republic, the official policy of the state has been built on propagation of secularism and Turkish nationalism for the foundation and continuation of a homogeneous nation-state. Therefore ethnic as well as religious groups have been suppressed with both violent and nonviolent methods for decades. Kurdish Islamists have been the greatest victims of such social engineering and suppression. Until the 1990s some manifestations of Kurdish Islamists appeared time to time. Nonetheless, with Kurdish Hezbollah’s operations, Kurdish Islamism’s political formation emerged. Hezbollah appealed to violence and adopted armed struggle and then was abolished and went underground in the early 2000s. However, its mass base has continued to redefine and reorganize themselves with non-governmental organizations and social platforms. After the ban on the community’s most important social organization Mustazaflar Hareketi, it decided to carry its activities to the formal political sphere.
