  • Check-List of Butterflies and Moths of the Notigale
NAUJOS IR RETOS LIETUVOS VABZDŽI Ų R ŪŠYS. 22 tomas 91 CHECK-LIST OF BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS OF THE NOTIGAL Ė BOG (NORTHERN LITHUANIA) DALIUS DAPKUS Department of Zoology, Vilnius Pedagogical University, Student ų 39, LT-08106 Vilnius, Lithuania. E-mail: [email protected] Introduction The Notigal ė telmological preserve (1391 ha) is located in Kupiškis administrative district (Northern Lithuania). It is protected since 1974 (State Service for Protected Areas…, 2008). The raised bog occupies approximately 552 ha of the whole territory. The efforts to study the entomofauna of the preserve were rather sporadic. The first faunistic data on Lepidoptera occurring in the Notigal ė bog were published by A. Palionis (1932). He recorded 14 species of butterflies and moths ( Papilio machaon, Plebeius argus , Thalera fimbrialis, Eulithis testata, E. populata, Macrothylacia rubi, Euthrix potatoria, Saturnia pavonia, Orgyia recens, O. antiqua, O. antiquoides, Diacrisia sannio, Amphipoea lucens, and Coenophila subrosea ). Later, some additional studies were carried out by A. Manikas (Kazlauskas, 1984, 2008; Ivinskis et al., 1990), and G. Švitra (unpublished data). More detailed studies on the composition of nocturnal moths occurring in the Notigal ė bog were carried out in 2000. The newly retrieved faunistic data were analysed and compared with the data obtained from the other bogs of Lithuania, showing some environmental similarities (Dapkus, 2003, 2004a, 2004b, 2004c), but the entire list of species is not yet published. The aim of this paper is to provide supplementary data on the species composition of nocturnal and day-active Lepidoptera recorded in the Notigal ė raised bog. Material and Methods The study on the butterflies and moths of the Notigal ė raised bog was carried out mainly in 2000.

Key words: Sphingidae, Smerinthus, kindermanni, immature stages, ovum, larva, pupa, determination. Introduction The biology of Smerinthus kindermanni Lederer, 1853 is rather poorly known. The larval host plants have been stated to be willows (Salix) or rarely poplars (Populus\ Salicaceae) in several faunistic reports, but apart from that information is scanty. Butler (1880) gave a line drawing of the pupa and some details on coloration of the full-grown larva, stating that the larva is very well camouflaged.

The helminthic species are listed and occurrence of some species is discussed. В монографии К.М. Рыжикова, В.П. Шарпило и Н.Н. (Bufo raddei Strauch, 1876).

This work contains faunistic data on the occurrence of 677 butterfly and moth species found during 2000-2008 in north-eastern Poland (Podlasie Province). The species Monopis fenestratella (HEYDEN, 1863), Amphisbatis elsae SVENSSON, 1982, Coleophora ptarmicia WALSINGHAM, 1910 and Epermenia falciformis (HAWORTH, 1828) were found in Poland for the first time. Recent data are provided for five other species – Monochroa servella (ZELLER, 1839), Teleiodes aenigma SATTLER, 1983, Dichomeris limosella (SCHLÄGER, 1849), Aethes rutilana (HÜBNER, 1817) and Eana derivana (LA HARPE, 1858) – known in Poland only from historical data. The occurrence in Podlasie of 75 species is reported for the first time, and the occurrence of 6 other species is confirmed for this area after more than 50 years. This work also describes a new species, Monopis bisonella ŠUMPICH, sp. n. A number of species are very rare in Poland and occur only locally.

  • A Study of the Spatio-Temporal Distribution Changes of the Korean Hawk Moth (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae)
JOURNAL OF Research Paper ECOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENT http://www.jecoenv.org J. Ecol. Environ. 38(1): 25-38, 2015 A study of the spatio-temporal distribution changes of the Korean Hawk Moth (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) Yong-Gu Han1, 2,†, Youngho Cho1, 2,†, Ohseok Kwon1, 2, Young-Kook Kang3, Young-Jun Park4, Youngjin Kim5, Min-Joo Choi6 and Sang-Ho Nam6,* 1School of Applied Biosciences, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Kyungpook National University, Daegu 702-701, Korea 2Institute for Phylogenomics and Evolution, Kyungpook National University, Daegu 702-701, Korea 3College of Liberal Arts, Daejeon University, Daejeon 300-716, Korea 4Ecological Monitoring Research Team, National Institute of Ecology, Seocheon 325-813, Korea 5National Park Research Institute, Wonju 220-947, Korea 6Department of Biology, Daejeon University, Daejeon 300-716, Korea Abstract This study was conducted in an effort to identify the fluctuation of species according to space and time by collecting information on samples of Korean Sphingid moths housed in Korea. The number of Sphingidae moth species housed in Korea was found to be 53. As 48 species and 47 species were found in Gyeongsangnam-do and Gangwon-do, respectively, relatively diverse species were considered to be distributed in these areas. Comparatively, in Jeollabuk-do only 36 species were found, whereas in Chungcheongbuk-do and Jeju Island 39 species were found. The number of individual Sphingid moths surveyed in Korea was 21,414. With regard to the number of individuals per species, Ampelophaga rubiginosa was highest, at 2,483, followed by Theretra japonica (1,716), Callambulyx tatarinovii (1,457), Acosmeryx naga (1,340), Rhagastis mongoliana (1,191), Marumba sperchius (1,083), and Dolbina tancrei (1,072).
