Zuzana Kršková, Ph.D. Abstract The thesis aims to provide a literary analysis focusing on education and self- development of the working and middle social classes of the United States in the early 20th century. The underpinning source for examining these processes is the novel Martin Eden written by American author Jack London in 1909. In the perspective of the historical and social background, the work investigates the differences in the educational environments, motivations, approaches, and methods between the book's two main characters, a young sailor Martin Eden and Ruth Morse, a girl of the bourgeois family. Further, it compares their realised learning, utilisation of education in their future lives and personal development. The work suggests that Martin Eden's self-studying was a far more complex and creative process than the formal educational methods in the early 20th century when American universities taught the students to adopt propositions and conventional standards rather than think critically and develop their talents. -

The Familiar Uncommon Spectator: Jack London's Female Watchers In The Game and the Abysmal Brute Scott Emmert In recent decades, Jack London's significant contributions to American literature have gained an increasing amount of critical recognition. Among these acknowledged contributions is his status as the first "serious" writer of sports fiction in America. Biographer James Lundquist, for example, notes that London "was one ofthe first writers to take sports seriously as the raw material for novels and stories" (179), and critic Michael Oriard goes further, identify ing London the "father of American sports fiction" meant for adult readers (Dreaming 9). Specifically, London's accomplishments as a writer ofsports lit erature rest mainly on his boxing fiction. 1 As one biography puts it, "London virtually invented the modern prizefight story" (Labor and Reesman 157 n.7), this invention being represented by the short stories "A Piece ofSteak (1909) and "The Mexican" (1910) and by the short novels The Game (1905) and The Abysmal Brute (1913). Always mindful of his audience and of his sales, how ever, London crafted this inventive prizefight fiction so as not to offend his readers with the brutality ofboxing, a sport so violent and decadent that it was deemed unfit as a subject of serious literature until London "gave it literary respectability" (Oriard, Dreaming 9). When describing what happens inside the square ring, London seeks a measure of respectability for boxing by tempering his descriptions ofviolent action with a compassionate depiction ofhumanity. London's naturalistic box ing fictions, in the way of most naturalist stories, seek to evoke the reader's sympathy for protagonists at the mercy of fo~ces beyond their control. -

Political Fiction Or Fiction About Politics. How to Operationalize a Fluid Genre in the Interwar Romanian Literature
ȘTEFAN FIRICĂ POLITICAL FICTION OR FICTION ABOUT POLITICS. HOW TO OPERATIONALIZE A FLUID GENRE IN THE INTERWAR ROMANIAN LITERATURE What’s in a Genre? A reader of contemporary genre theories is compelled to conclude that, one way or another, the idea of literary class has managed a narrow escape from obsolescence. Conceptual maximalism fell behind the pragmatic call to respond to a global cultural environment for which the task of grouping, structuring, organizing, labelling remains vital for a long list of reasons, of which marketing policies are not to be forgotten. The modern story of the field has seen many twists and turns. After some theories of genre evolutionism – derived more or less from Darwinism – consumed their heyday in the 1890s–1920s1, Bakhtin (1937) took a decisive step toward a “historical poetics”, before Wellek, Warren (1948), Northrop Frye (1957), and Käte Hamburger (1957), and, later on, Gérard Genette (1979), Alastair Fowler (1982), or Jean-Marie Schaeffer (1989) returned to self- styled mixtures of formalism and historicism2. The study which pushed forward the scholarship in the field was, surprisingly or not, a fierce deconstruction of the “madness of the genre”, perceived as a self- defeating theory and practice of classification, highly necessary and utterly impossible at the same time. Into the Primitive “Old longings nomadic leap, Chafing at custom’s chain; Again from its brumal sleep Wakens the ferine strain.” Buck did not read the newspapers, or he would have known that trouble was brewing, not alone for himself, but for every tide-water dog, strong of muscle and with warm, long hair, from Puget Sound to San Diego. Because men, groping in the Arctic darkness, had found a yellow metal, and because steamship and transportation companies were booming the find, thousands of men were rushing into the Northland. The trees had been stripped by a recent wind of their white covering of frost, and they seemed to lean towards each other, black and ominous, in the fading light. A vast silence reigned over the land. The land itself was a desolation, lifeless, without movement, so lone and cold that the spirit of it was not even that of sadness. There was a hint in it of laughter, but of a laughter more terrible than any sadness—a laughter that was mirthless as the smile of the sphinx, a laughter cold as the frost and partaking of the grimness of infallibility. -

Utopia, Myth, and Narrative Christopher YORKE (University of Glasgow) I: Introduction [I]n the 1920s and 1930s…Fascist theorists…adapting the language of Georges Sorel, grandiloquently proclaimed the superiority of their own creative myths as ‘dynamic realities,’ spontaneous utterances of authentic desires, over the utopias, which they dismissed as hollow rationalist constructs.1 - Frank and Fritzie Manuel We have created a myth, this myth is a belief, a noble enthusiasm; it does not need to be reality, it is a striving and a hope, belief and courage. Our myth is the nation, the great nation which we want to make into a concrete reality for ourselves.2 - Benito Mussolini, October 1922; from speech given before the ‘March on Rome’ One of the most historically recent and damaging blows to the reputation of utopianism came from its association with the totalitarian regimes of Hitler’s Third Reich and Mussolini’s Fascist party in World War II and the prewar era. Being an apologist for utopianism, it seemed to some, was tantamount to being an apologist for Nazism and all of its concomitant horrors. The fantasy principle of utopia was viewed as irretrievably bound up with the irrationalism of modern dictatorship. While these conclusions are somewhat understandable given the broad strokes that definitions of utopia are typically painted with, I will show in this paper that the link between the mythos of fascism and the constructs of utopianism results from an unfortunate conflation at the theoretical level. The irrationalism of any mass ethos and the rationalism of the thoughtful utopian planner are, indeed, completely at odds with each other. -

Cambridge: Polity Press 2011. 224 pages $69.95 (cloth ISBN 978–0–7456–4530–8); $24.95 (paper ISBN 978–0– 7456–4531–5) The Brothers Karamazov is not only a superb novel but contains theological and philosophical material which arouses (holy) envy even in the most charitable theologian and philosopher. As a title, Jacques Ranciére’s The Politics of Literature can espouse a similar type of envy. While one should not judge a book by its cover (or title), it was those four words that drew me to the work and the opportunity to review it. Unlike the Jewish people who were said to accept the Torah before God even articulated its parameters (“we will do and we will obey”), I should have inquired and investigated more first before doing anything. Ranciére’s work is a collection of ten nebulously linked, previously published essays translated from the French by Julie Rose (the French collection was published in 2006). The title of the book is also the title of its first chapter. The essay (and book) opens: “The politics of literature is not the same thing as the politics of writers. It does not concern the personal engagements of writers in the social or political struggles of their times. Neither does it concern the way writers represent social structures, political movements or various identities in their books” (3). Sadly, it was precisely in hope of further examining those elements that attracted me to the work. As I am a theologian espousing postcolonial, liberation, and feminist approaches to texts, drawing upon my literary background and developing work in ethics and politics, I can only be candid in acknowledging that it was a rocky beginning for this reviewer, to say the least. -
Jack London, the Sailor
JACK LONDON, THE SAILOR The water around him beckoned Jack London at an early age. Growing up, mostly in Oakland, California, Jack London always had San Francisco Bay close by. This provided him the opportunity to experience adventures on the bay that inevitably led to adventures in far off waters. The main source for Jack London’s early experiences in sailing is found in his writing. The book John Barleycorn is the main source. Here he mentions sailing a skiff on the bay at age fourteen. The skiff was a large rowboat with a centerboard and a small sail. In San Francisco Bay the young London observed ships from foreign countries which triggered a yearning to experience the adventures he envisioned were to be found in other parts of the world. THE RAZZLE DAZZLE Jack London’s next sailing adventures were on the Razzle Dazzle, a sloop for which he paid oyster pirate, French Frank, three hundred dollars that he had borrowed from his wet nurse, Virginia Prentiss. With his own vessel, London now felt tremendously free and wasted no time in raiding the oyster beds with his one-man crew, Spider Healy. The oyster beds were on government land that had been taken over by the Southern Pacific Railroad and leased to oyster growers. London sailed the Razzle Dazzle until the mainsail burned, then he teamed up with young Scratch Nelson on his boat and continued as an oyster pirate. Eventually, London realized it was only a matter of time before he would be either caught or killed, so he agreed to become a deputy for the Fish Patrol operating out of Benicia. -

‘Such was the law of The Road’1 and Such were the Rules of The Text: Autobiographical Explorations of Hobo Subculture Joanne Hall Red Rocks Community College Lakewood, Colorado Perhaps the greatest charm of tramp-life is the absence of monotony. In Hobo Land the face of life is protean – an ever-changing phantasmagoria, where the impossible happens and the unexpected jumps out of the bushes at every turn of the road. The hobo never knows what is going to happen the next moment; hence, he lives only in the present moment. – Jack London, The Road (p. 37). Jack London’s assessment of tramp-life suggests its movement, fluidity, dynamic nature and present-orientated temporal dimension. These sentiments, however, are but a whimsical side step, for the rest of The Road centralises the image of a masculine subculture with a complicated set of rules and ranks. Thus, the suggestion of fluidity clashes with the ‘laws’ that frame hobo experience, as represented by London’s text. Indeed, texts defining themselves as hobo autobiography demonstrate a number of structural similarities, suggesting that ideas of the romance or freedom of the road are, in fact, subservient to the repetitive, formulaic, mythic pattern of the subgenre. Yet, it is imperative to observe that while these texts are labelled as autobiography, charges of exaggeration and verbose storytelling could be levied against each of them. Indeed, their incorporation of tall tales dares the reader to question authenticity. However, instead of invalidating the claim to autobiography, this provides a springboard into multileveled issues of performance, creativity, artistry and authorship, succinctly linking with the myriad inter-textual references employed by the authors. -
