Dissertation Advisor: Ian Jared Miller Sakura Marcelle Christmas The Cartographic Steppe: Mapping Environment and Ethnicity in Japan’s Imperial Borderlands ABSTRACT This dissertation traces one of the origins of the autonomous region system in the People’s Republic of China to the Japanese imperial project by focusing on Inner Mongolia in the 1930s. Here, Japanese technocrats demarcated the borderlands through categories of ethnicity and livelihood. At the center of this endeavor was the perceived problem of nomadic decline: the loss of the region’s deep history of transhumance to Chinese agricultural expansion and capitalist extraction. -

THE INTERACTION BETWEEN ETHNIC RELATIONS AND STATE POWER: A STRUCTURAL IMPEDIMENT TO THE INDUSTRIALIZATION OF CHINA, 1850-1911 by WEI LI Under the Direction of Toshi Kii ABSTRACT The case of late Qing China is of great importance to theories of economic development. This study examines the question of why China’s industrialization was slow between 1865 and 1895 as compared to contemporary Japan’s. Industrialization is measured on four dimensions: sea transport, railway, communications, and the cotton textile industry. I trace the difference between China’s and Japan’s industrialization to government leadership, which includes three aspects: direct governmental investment, government policies at the macro-level, and specific measures and actions to assist selected companies and industries. -

International winter schools in Russia COUNTRY OVERVIEW Geography Russia spans from the eastern plains of Europe to the Pacific Ocean in Asia, making it the largest country in the world. The coasts of Russia are washed by 12 seas and three oceans. There is hardly any country in the world where such a variety of scenery and vegetation can be found: steppes in the south, plains and forests in the midlands, tundra and taiga in the north, highlands and deserts in the east. There are 11 time zones in Russia, which is more than in any other country in the world. Climate Due to its vast territory, Russia is a country of natural contrasts. The northern part of the country is located in arctic and subarctic climate zones, while the southern regions have a subtropical climate. Normally Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kazan have very warm summers and fairly cold winters, while Tomsk in Siberia often has temperatures of -40 C or colder in winter. Culture Despite its vast area the population is 146 million people, less than the United States, Brazil or Pakistan. However, it is extremely diverse culturally. There are about 185 ethnic groups, whereas Slavs (the first inhabitants of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus) comprise the major ethnicity. Russian is the only official language across the country, but there are more than 25 different languages that are considered official in certain regions. Economy Russia is the biggest gas and second biggest oil exporter in the world and also has vast stocks of precious metals. Other important sectors include information technology, defense, agriculture and aerospace. -

For immediate release 1 December, 2015 China Railway + Transit Exhibition and Conference Opens Today in Shanghai Today marks the debut of China Railway + Transit Exhibition and Conference 2015 (CRTEC). The show is jointly organised by UBM Asia and the China Chamber of Commerce for the Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME). The exhibition will take place at the Shanghai New International Exhibition Centre (SNIEC) in Shanghai, China from 1-3 December, 2015 and is expected to attract manufacturers and buyers from the railway, urban transit and relevant transportation industries. The show is co-located with Marintec China - the largest maritime and shipbuilding event in Asia. Visitors would be able to visit both events on the same trip. The booming railway industry market in China offers huge business opportunities China’s railway industry has developed rapidly since the beginning of the 21st century and has achieved profound success, especially in high-speed railway and urban rail transit. By 2014, China’s railway mileage reached 112,000 kilometres and high-speed operating mileage reached more than 16,000 kilometres. The transportation of 2.357 billion passengers and 3.813 billion tons of freight by railway nationwide ranked first in the world. The quantity of national railway locomotives was 21,100, that of railway trucks was 710,100 and that of the railway passenger trains was 60,600, which includes 1,411 multiple units and 13,696 vehicles. With the massive investment in ordinary and high-speed railways, China will remain the world’s largest railway market in the coming five years. -
