Extensive research experience in anthropology, archaeology, and architectural history. Recognized as a leading authority in historic preservation survey and documentation techniques and in the history of Caribbean and Pacific architecture. Archaeological and historic structures survey experience in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, New York, Connecticut, Vermont, Hawai`i, and numerous Caribbean and Pacific islands. Frequent study tour leader for the Smithsonian Institution, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Honolulu Academy of Arts and the U.S. State Department, including cultural tours of Caribbean, the eastern seaboard and lecture tours in the U.S., the Caribbean, Europe, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. Increasingly serves as a consultant to international organizations in Southeast Asia, including projects with the World Fund and UNESCO.

In 1991, lectured on the Secretary of the Interior's "Standards for Historic Preservation Projects" throughout Georgia as part of the Georgia's Living Places
