  • 'Sexing the Single Girl: Adapting Helen Gurley Brown Without Reading Her Book
'Sexing the Single Girl: Adapting Helen Gurley Brown without reading her book Helen Gurley Brown published Sex and the Single Girl in 1962, its enormous success prefiguring her role in reshaping Cosmopolitan in the 1960s. Since her recent death aged 90 her impact as the author of this famous bestseller and as Editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan has been the subject of further attention. Most obviously, her self-help manual is seen as a foundational text for Sex and the City and a celebration of the single girl as anticipating the abundant portrayals of the urban singleton. My paper today is focused on how her status as author of Sex and the Single Girl is positioned in the 1964 film of the same name, starring Natalie Wood and Tony Curtis and directed by Richard Quine. This is a direct and conscious adaptation in the sense that film rights were secured and writers were commissioned to produce a script; but the resulting rom com has only two obvious links to the text – a bestselling book and the author’s name (with the addition of a PhD). Unlike some of the classic Doris Day rom coms, Helen is forced to acknowledge the fact of her virginity by the attempts of men who pressurize her into announcing and accepting its symbolic implications. The story in brief is that Dr Brown, a researcher at the ‘Institute of Pre- Marital and Marital Studies’, has written a bestselling book (Sex and the Single Girl), which, like Brown’s, advocates acceptance that single women can have a healthy sex life.

  • Eastern University Post-Graduation Report 2019 First Destination Survey : Traditional Undergraduate Baccalaureate Colleges
EASTERN UNIVERSITY POST-GRADUATION REPORT 2019 FIRST DESTINATION SURVEY : TRADITIONAL UNDERGRADUATE BACCALAUREATE COLLEGES Eastern University Center for Career Development | www.eastern.edu/careers 2 TRADITIONAL UNDERGRADUATE BACCALAUREATE COLLEGES: Class of 2019 First Destination Survey ABOUT THE SURVEY The first destination survey provides an overview regarding the status of Eastern University Traditional Undergraduate Baccalaureate (TUB) alumni within six to nine months of graduation. For the purposes of this survey, “Class of 2019” is defined as a TUB student who graduated in August 2018, December 2018, or May 2019. The Center for Career Development gathered statistics using the professional guidelines set forth by NACE (National Association for Colleges and Employers). The First Destination Survey, created by Handshake using NACE guidelines, was distributed electronically to TUB alumni. Data were also gathered via paper surveys at May 2019 graduation rehearsal. Faculty members were contacted via email in early 2020 about graduates whose status remained unknown. Additionally, information on non-responders was captured from updated professional profiles on social media si tes (primarily LinkedIn) as well as employer webpages. Through this extensive process, we obtained an 86% knowledge rate of the Class of 2019. “Knowledge rate”, as defined by NACE, is the “percent of graduates for which an institution has reasonable and verifiable information concerning the graduates’ post -graduation career activities.” Our intention is to provide a summary of first destination highlights, as well as a specific breakdown by TUB Colleges for the Class of 2019. Submitted by Sarah Todd, M.Ed ’13, Director, Center for Career Development, 4/11/20 GENERAL SUMMARY 96% of the Class of 2019 survey respondents are employed, involved in post- graduate education, or serving in full-time volunteer work within 6-9 months of graduation.

In a matter of a few weeks, efforts by county politicians to ascend the color-coded tiers that allow successively wider open- ings of business and social sectors have been abandoned as rates of infections, deaths, and hospitalizations have sky- rocketed to unprecedented levels. In August OC’s Adjusted Daily Case Rate per 100,000 residents had dropped well below 7, allowing the County to ascend from the Widespread (Purple) Tier to the Red (Substantial) Tier of the State’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy, allowing more businesses to reopen. County officials were aspiring for that figure to drop below 4 that would move the County up to the even less restrictive Moderate (Orange) Tier. Bad Girls Go Everywhere: The Life of Helen Gurley Brown. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2009. xv + 270 pp. $27.95 (cloth), ISBN 978-0-19-534205-5. Reviewed by Kim Voss (University of Central Florida)Published on Jhistory (November, 2009) Commissioned by Donna Harrington-Lueker Redefining Feminism to Include Cosmo Icon Helen Gurley Brown The women of reality television dating shows could use a copy of Helen Gurley Brown’s 1962 bestseller Sex and the Single Girl. The book’s message of self worth and the rejection of marriage as the only ideal for women continues to resonate--particularly for The Bachelor contestants who reject dignity in exchange for an engagement ring. Gurley Brown’s message still feels timely and is testimony to her progressiveness in her day. As book author, magazine editor, and social critic, Gurley Brown sent a message in support of women’s changing roles. Yet, her name is typically left out of the history of those who championed women. As demonstrated in Jennifer Scanlon’s Bad Girls Go Everywhere: The Life of Helen Gurley Brown, the iconic former Cosmo editor's name belongs alongside those of Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem. That is Scanlon’s thesis, and she proves it well. As she writes, Gurley Brown “sought to liberate not the married woman but the single woman, not the suburban but the urban dweller, not the college-educated victim but the working-class survivor” (pp.
