3 LIVE IN RUSSIA

On his first visit to Russia, Itzhak Perlman, who was himself born in Israel and whose parents came from Poland, was accompanied by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, which had been granted permission for the first time to play in the country. Their visit, which was also immortalised on DVD, was much publicised and had hugely symbolic overtones, as well as coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the birth of Tchaikovsky, the most popular of all Russian composers. Coupled with the Tchaikovsky Concerto, recorded under the baton of Zubin Mehta in the Philharmonic Hall in Leningrad (Perlman’s fourth recording of the work, but his first live version), is another live recording, this time of a recital he had given a few days earlier in Moscow’s famous Tchaikovsky Hall. The violinist himself announced each piece on the programme, as if he were playing for a group of friends, and the excitement is palpable as the audience are by turns stunned or electrified by the dazzling musicianship of an artist appearing for the first time on Russian soil. Particularly attentive discophiles will note a one-off reading of the March from Prokofiev’s Love for Three Oranges , arranged by Heifetz. In piece after piece, culminating in a breathtaking rendition of Bazzini’s La Ronde des lutins , which has the auditorium spellbound, Perlman displays the full range of his acting talents, living and breathing everything from the meditative or serious to the comic or tender, not only with his playing, but with every fibre of his being. In this respect, too, he is unique.

4 LIVE IN RUSSIA

5 LIVE IN RUSSIA
