  • Machinima As Digital Agency and Growing Commercial Incorporation
A Binary Within the Binary: Machinima as Digital Agency and Growing Commercial Incorporation A thesis presented to the faculty of the College of Fine Arts of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Megan R. Brown December 2012 © 2012 Megan R. Brown. All Rights Reserved 2 This thesis titled A Binary Within the Binary: Machinima as Digital Agency and Growing Commercial Incorporation by MEGAN R. BROWN has been approved for the School of Film and the College of Fine Arts by Louis-Georges Schwartz Associate Professor of Film Studies Charles A. McWeeny Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT BROWN, MEGAN R., M.A., December 2012, Film Studies A Binary Within the Binary: Machinima as Digital Agency and Growing Commercial Incorporation (128 pp.) Director of Thesis: Louis-Georges Schwartz. This thesis traces machinima, films created in real-time from videogame engines, from the exterior toward the interior, focusing on the manner in which the medium functions as a tool for marginalized expression in the face of commercial and corporate inclusion. I contextualize machinima in three distinct contexts: first, machinima as historiography, which allows its minority creators to articulate and distribute their interpretation of national and international events without mass media interference. Second, machinima as a form of fan fiction, in which filmmakers blur the line between consumers and producers, a feature which is slowly being warped as videogame studios begin to incorporate machinima into marketing techniques. Finally, the comparison between psychoanalytic film theory, which explains the psychological motivations behind cinema's appeal, applied to videogames and their resulting machinima, which knowingly disregard established theory and create agency through parody.

  • Media Translations of Fantasy Worlds
A World of Difference: Media Translations of Fantasy Worlds Rachel Louise Mizsei Ward Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Film, Television and Media Studies May 2013 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there-from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. Rachel Mizsei Ward University of East Anglia Abstract The modern consumer has access to a massively complex entertainment world. Many of the products available reveal a visible movement of popular fantasy worlds between different media. This transmedia process creates a strong link between film, merchandising and games; with all of these mediums borrowing from each other. This borrowing takes various forms, from licensed adaptations to unofficial copying of ideas, settings and characters as well as exploiting the different aesthetics and techniques of different media. Much of the scholarship on transmedia concentrates on storytelling, where a single overarching narrative unfolds over several different media. This thesis will move away from storytelling to consider how culture producers borrow the aesthetics, narratives and fantasy worlds from other sources, including computer games. This borrowing happens because it enables them to use transmedia functionality to gain market share from an already established audience who have a vested interested in, and enthusiasm for, an established world. Most of this borrowing happens around specific genres – especially fantasy, science fiction and horror. These genres are particularly wide-ranging and emphasise the possibilities of worldbuilding, making then good sources for multi-media franchises.

ABSTRACT We inductively develop a model of the commercialization process for new products or services user entrepreneurs undertake when entering an industry while drawing on proprietary technology developed in another industry. Extending the growing field of user entrepreneurship, we identify a two-phase approach to industry entry by user entrepreneurs who start “under the radar” of incumbent firms, gain experience, attract a first potential customer base, and then, in a second phase, engage in commercialization.

  • An Open Letter to All Who Treasured Monty Oum by Shane Newville
An Open Letter to All Who Treasured Monty Oum by Shane Newville Summary I had big dreams for a long time but never believed in myself. I started going for it anyway and met Monty Oum, who helped the crap out of me. After years of teaching myself, loads of practice, picking his brain, and taking his advice, I eventually got a job that allowed me to work with him and get paid for it. It was the dream job, for a time. Regardless of what follows I am forever grateful for that. Working with him was really my only reason for being at Rooster Teeth. Monty met one of the greatest women on earth (Sheena Duquette) and got married. For close to a year both he and she worked together on RWBY Volumes 2 & 3 (herself unofficially and uncredited). He spent more time at home working with her at his side than he did at the office, hoping to bring RWBY back on track to the way he wanted to tell the story. Too soon, Monty passed away. Sheena was not allowed to continue working on RWBY. After Rooster Teeth closed the door in her face, she moved to LA to be around people who loved and supported her. It was a long 4 months of politics and fighting to protect Monty’s legacy, as we cared about him and his vision more than we cared about the company selling its IP and making bank. My wife left with our kids. She wanted a divorce. It was difficult for her to deal with me, my issues, and the insane amount of work I took on.
