Stan Cullis’ side lost two of their opening three games, at Burnley and Sunderland, but stormed to the top with an 18-match unbeaten run, with Hancocks grabbing a hat-trick in an 8-1 demolition of Chelsea. Other notable wins during that period included 3-2 at Arsenal and 2-1 at Newcastle United, with Wolves maintaining their challenge by beating Blackpool 4-1, Sheffield United 6-1 and Preston North End 1-0. They completed the double over local rivals West Bromwich Albion, then beat Charlton Athletic 5-0 and won the title by four points. Hancocks was ever-present, while eight other players - Peter Broadbent, Jimmy Mullen, Bill Shorthouse, Bill Slater, Swinbourne, Bert Williams, Wilshaw and Billy Wright - missed just 31 games between them that season. TERRACE IDOL STEVE BULL ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL striker Steve Bull holds Wolves’ all-time goalscoring record. Initially with Tipton, he joined West Bromwich Albion in August 1985, but had limited first-team chances before moving to Molineux with Andy Thompson in November 1986. ‘Bully’ formed a lethal partnership with Andy Mutch as Wolves won the Division Four and Three titles in consecutive seasons as well as the Sherpa Van Trophy in 1988. After representing England at Under-21 and B levels, he scored on his full international debut against Scotland in May 1989 and gained 13 caps. He became a cult hero at Molineux, finishing as Wolves’ leading marksman nine times and netting 250 goals in 474 league games until a knee injury ended his top- flight career in July 1999. Briefly reuniting with Graham Turner at Hereford United, he then managed Stafford Rangers. Awarded the MBE and is a Wolves vice president with a stand named after him. LEIGH EDWARDS

fulhamfc.com 21 THE GAFFER NUNO ESPIRITO SANTO NUNO ESPIRITO SANTO became the third foreign coach to take charge of Wolves when he arrived at Molineux 18 months ago - and the former FC Porto goalkeeper is already the most successful of the trio by far. Norwegian Stale Solbakken was fired after six months in 2013 as Wolves hurtled towards League One, while ex-Italy star Walter Zenga lasted just three during the 2016/17 campaign. By contrast, Nuno - aided by several talented imports from his homeland - guided the Old Gold to an emphatic Championship title success in his first season and has made a solid start to life in the Premier League. Born in the former Portuguese colony of Sao Tome, Nuno began his playing career at Vitoria Guimaraes and spent five seasons with Deportivo La Coruna, during which he was loaned to Merida and Osasuna. He had two separate spells with Porto, as well as a brief stint with Dynamo Moscow, and won three caps for Portugal’s B team before hanging up his gloves and joining Malaga as goalkeeping coach in 2010. Nuno’s first managerial opportunity came two years later when he took charge at Rio Ave, securing Europa League qualification for the first time in the club’s history before returning to La Liga as Valencia boss. Despite a fourth-place finish in 2014/15, Nuno left Valencia the following season and rejoined Porto as head coach, but was dismissed after failing to win a trophy and took the Wolves job nine days later.

Age: 44 | Nationality: Portuguese Managerial Career: Rio Ave (2012-14), Valencia (2014-15), Appointed: May 2017 FC Porto (2016-17), Wolves (2017-) THE CAPTAIN CONOR COADY ONE OF Nuno Espirito Santo’s fi rst tactical changes after taking over at Molineux involved moving Conor Coady into a three-man defence - and he has been a permanent fi xture at the back ever since. The Merseysider started out as a midfielder with Liverpool’s youth academy, but made just two first-team appearances for the Reds before spending the 2013/14 campaign on loan at Sheffield United. Coady departed to join Huddersfield Town the following summer and made 48 appearances for the Yorkshire side, scoring three goals, which prompted Wolves to pay £2m for his signature at the end of the season. During his first two years at Molineux, he continued to play in midfield, or sometimes at right-back, but was converted into a central defender by Nuno and his ability to read the game and distribute the ball has been essential to Wolves’ success. Coady missed just one game - due to suspension - during his side’s Championship title triumph last season and has now accumulated more than 150 16 appearances in the Old Gold.

ALEKSANDAR MITROVIĆ

THE WHITES pulled off a transfer deadline day coup back in January when they nipped in front of Bordeaux and Anderlecht to bag Newcastle striker ‘Mitro’ on loan until the end of the season. The belligerent Serbian got off to a fl yer, scoring 12 goals as the Whites secured a glorious return to the top fl ight. Joining permanently in the summer, Mitro began the new season in emphatic style, scoring three goals in four games, and found the net again at Brighton. With the Whites 2-1 up and cruising, Mitro decided to make the season much more exciting for Fulham fans by inexplicably using his arm to bring down an innocuous high ball inside the area, even playing on like nothing had happened, before watching Brighton score the resulting penalty. Perhaps overcome by a sudden wave of existential angst, he decided to remind us all that man is inherently fallible. Maybe it was hubris. It isn’t wise to press a man of Mitro’s size and build with these sorts of enquiries, so his curious behaviour that day remains a mystery. But in the end it wasn’t a problem, as we didn’t want those two extra points anyway...

66 The Offi cial Fulham FC Matchday Programme PAUL SCHOLES

ONE OF the nation’s true greats, everyone could appreciate the majestic elegance with which Paul Scholes played the game. Possessing the full package of footballing wizardry, people would be forgiven for forgetting that Paul was still capable of doing things that were a bit rubbish. On 21st March 2009 Fulham got their fi rst home win against Manchester United in 45 years, beating a star- studded side 2-0. Admittedly, United played most of the game a man down, since Paul was dismissed after just 18 minutes for a comically amateurish goalline handball. Former Whites stopper Edwin van der Sar blocked a Bobby Zamora header, only for the ball to come straight back to him for another go. As surprised as everyone else at Craven Cottage to see Bobby hit the target twice in quick succession, Paul panicked, putting his arms up to block the shot in cowardly fashion, perhaps wishing to protect the lucratively handsome face of the world’s great consumer brands. Sinking to his knees, Paul off ered nothing in the way of protest at the inevitable red card, before plodding wearily down the tunnel. Danny Murphy (perhaps not trusting fate to smile on Bobby a third time) converted the resulting penalty. TOMAS KALAS AS DEDICATED readers of The List will know, the most memorable incident of Tomas’ time with the Whites was when he was sent off after 39 seconds at Reading on 12th August 2017. Coming a close second is the time he conceded the winning penalty (again, at Reading) in the Whites’ Play-Off Semi-Final defeat the previous May. With the teams level on aggregate following a 1-1 draw at the Cottage, the Royals’ Yann Kermorgant raced onto a hopeful long ball into the box, closely shadowed by Tomas, who was able to get in front of the ageing Frenchman to snuff out the danger. Unfortunately for the Whites, Tomas’ method of neutralising the threat was to allow the ball to travel up his left arm before launching it into the Berkshire sky. The damage was done. We cannot help but think that kicking the ball out of play fi rst, without the handball, would have been preferable. We aren’t sure whether Tomas has visited the Madejski Stadium since, but when he does, we trust that he will take the opportunity to fulfi l his destiny by burying a spectacular 30-yard belter in the top corner of his own net, completing the Holy Trinity of defensive howlers.
