ABSTRACT Anaccount of thespecies of the family Calappidae reported from the Canary Islands is given. Calappagalloides isrecorded for the rsttime from the Canaries. Whenever available, data on distribution, habitat, biometry, length/ widthand length/ weightrelationships, sex-ratio, breeding, and otherbioecological information are presented.
INTRODUCTION Inthe northeasternAtlantic Oceanand the MediterraneanSea the brachyuran super-family CalappoideaDe Haan,1833 is representedby the families Matutidae DeHaan,1835 and Calappidae De Haan,1833 (cf. D’Udekem d’Acoz, 1999). In the eastern central Atlantic andthe Mediterranean, the family Calappidaecom- prises sevenknown species (Holthuis,1981; Manning & Holthuis,1981; Galil & Golani,1990; Garcí a-Raso, 1993; Pastore, 1995;D’Udekem d’Acoz, 1993, 1999 ): Calappagalloides Stimpson,1859, Calappagranulata (Linnaeus,1758 ), Calappa pelii Herklots,1851, Calapparissoana Pastore, 1995, Calapparubroguttata Herk- lots, 1851, Calappatuerkayana Pastore, 1995,and Cryptosomacristatum Brullé, 1837. Matuta species, whichhave been traditionally placedwithin the Calappidae (e.g.,Manning & Holthuis,1981; Perez &Bellwood,1989; Perez, 1990 ),have recently beenassigned to the Matutidae (cf.Š tev ci´Ï c&Galil, 1994).

Ofthe abovementioned species, onlytwo have been recorded to date forthe CanaryIslands (cf.Gonzá lez, 1995): Calappagranulata and Cryptosomacrista- tum.Several authorsreported on the habitat andbathymetric distribution ofboth species in the CanaryIslands (e.g.,Santaella, 1974;Den Hartog, 1987; Fransen, 1991;Gonzá lez, 1995). Inthis paper, C.galloides is recordedfor the rst time fromthe CanaryIslands. This workalso providesdata ondistribution, habitat, biometry, reproduction, and otherecological informationof these three species ofCalappidae in the Canary Islands.
MATERIAL AND METHODS Collecting was carried outduring ten cruises madeto the CanaryIslands in the period1994-1999. During these shingsurveys on board the R/V“Taliarte” andseveral artisanal shingboats, bottom traps, trammelnets, andbottom dredges wereused on the insular shelves andupper slopes at depthsranging from 10 to 325m. Moreover, one specimen of Cryptosomacristatum collected at 3mdepth bysnorkelingwas also considered. Thefollowing measurements ( ± 0.1mm) weretaken using vernier calipers: carapacelength (CL )andcarapace width (CW )excludingthe posterolateral teeth. Thetotal weight(W )ofeach crab, generally from fresh material, was recorded (± 0.1g).Sex and ovigerous condition of the females werenoted. Thedevelopmental stage forembryos in eachegg mass attached to pleopods was determinedmicroscopically ,accordingto Thessalou-Legaki (1992 ).CL/CW, CL/W,andCW/ Wrelationships werecalculated onsexes of Calappagranulata and Cryptosomacristatum ,separately. Someof the specimens reportedhave been deposited in the collections ofthe Instituto Canariode Ciencias Marinas (ICCM,Telde, Gran Canaria).
