Board of Trustees Biographical Information, including affiliations:

Rev.Heng Sure Rev. Heng Sure was ordained as a Buddhist monk in 1976. He serves as the Managing Director of the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery and leads a translation project of the Avamtasaka . He is also actively involved in interfaith dialogue and in the ongoing conversation between spirituality and technology. Rev. Heng Sure has an M.A. in Oriental Languages from UC Berkeley, and a Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. Rev. Heng Sure is affiliated with the University as a Professor, and he is also a member of the governing Board of Directors of DRBA, DRBU’s parent organization.

Bhikshu Jin Yan Bhikshu Jin Yan was ordained as a Buddhist monk in 2000. He teaches mathematics and Chinese at the Developing Virtue Secondary School. He holds a master’s degree from Realm Buddhist University. Bhikshu Jin Yan is not affiliated with the University. He serves on the governing Board of Directors of DRBA, DRBU’s parent organization.

Bhikshu Jin Fan Bhikshu Jin Fan was ordained as a Buddhist monk in 2002. He is a teacher at the Developing Virtue Secondary School where he serves as the director of the Chinese language program. He also serves on the Educational Board which oversees the school’s leadership team. Bhikshu Jin Fan is not affiliated with the University. He serves on the governing Board of Directors of DRBA, DRBU’s parent organization.

Bhikshuni Heng Chih, Chair Bhikshuni Heng Chih is a Buddhist nun ordained in the Chinese tradition for 42 years under the guidance of the late Venerable Master . She has been a member of the Buddhist Text Translation Society since 1970 and is credited in many publications. Her intensive study and translation of key provides her with extensive knowledge of and its philosophies. She has served on the faculty of the and Laity Vocational Training Programs for over two decades. She has also taught at Bond University in Gold Coast, Australia. Bhikshuni Heng Chih holds MA and PhD degrees in Translation of Buddhist Texts from the Dharma Realm Buddhist University. Bhikshuni Heng Chih is affiliated with the University as a Professor. She also serves on the governing Board of Directors of DRBA, DRBU’s parent organization.

Bhikshuni Heng Hsien, Honorary Member Bhikshuni Heng Hsien is a founding faculty member of the Dharma Realm Buddhist University. She is a native of California and was ordained in San Francisco in 1972, at the original Gold Mountain Monastery. As Emerita Professor, Heng Hsien Shi maintains her connections with the students and faculty of DRBU in many ways. After serving for many decades, she is an Honorary member on both the DRBA Board of Directors and the DRBU Board of Trustees, and continues to be active in the Buddhist Text Translation Society. She holds a Ph.D. in South and South East Asian Studies from the University of California at Berkeley.

Bhikshuni Heng Liang, Secretary Bhikshuni Heng Liang was ordained as a Buddhist nun in 1982. She has been the Registrar for the University since 1995. She was the Chief Operations Officer for the Sangha and Laity Training Programs from 1994 to 1999. She holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from the Dharma Realm Buddhist University. Bhikshuni Heng Liang affiliated with the University as the Dean of Students and the Registrar. She also serves on the governing Board of Directors of DRBA, DRBU’s parent organization.

Bhikshuni Heng Gwei Bhikshuni Heng Gwei is a Buddhist nun in the Mahayana tradition. She holds a B.A. in from the University of British Columbia. Bhikshuni Heng Gwei is not affiliated with the University. She serves on the governing Board of Directors of DRBA, DRBU’s parent organization.

Bhikshuni Heng Shr Bhikshuni Heng Shr is a Buddhist nun in the Mahayana tradition. She holds a B.A. in Language Literature from the Tamkang University in Taiwan and a B.A. in Buddhist Education from the Dharma Realm Buddhist University. Bhikshuni Heng Shr is not affiliated with the University. She serves on the governing Board of Directors of DRBA, DRBU’s parent organization.

Bhikshuni Heng Je Bhikshuni Je received her ordination from the late Venerable Master Hsuan Hua in 1992. She is a translator for the Buddhist Text Translation Society. She is also the general editor for the monthly Buddhist Journal, Vajra Bodhi Sea . She is on the faculty of the Sangha and Laity Vocational Training Programs and Developing Virtue Secondary School. She holds a B.A. from Tamkang University in Taiwan and two M.A. degrees from the Dharma Realm Buddhist University. Bhikshuni Heng Je is not affiliated with the University. She serves on the governing Board of Directors of DRBA, DRBU’s parent organization.

Bhikshuni Heng Yin Bhikshuni Heng Yin was ordained as a Buddhist nun in 1992. She is the principal of the Developing Virtue Secondary School. She holds a B.S. in computer science from the University of Texas and a M.A. from the Dharma Realm Buddhist University. Bhikshuni Heng Yin is not affiliated with the University. She serves on the governing Board of Directors of DRBA, DRBU’s parent organization.

Bhikshuni Heng Jiao Bhikshuni Heng Jiao is a Buddhist nun. She has been a University administrator since 1996. Prior to joining the University, she worked eight years in the banking industry in Taiwan. She holds a B.A. from the Dharma Realm Buddhist University and a B.A. from Sonoma State University. Bhikshuni Heng Jiao is affiliated with the University as the Director of Finance. She also serves on the governing Board of Directors of DRBA, DRBU’s parent organization.

Sramanera Chin Wei Sramanera Chin Wei is a Buddhist monk in the Mahayana tradition. As a young Buddhist leader, he organized the Dharma Realm Buddhist Youth organization and developed the residential volunteer program at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. He received his B.A. in computer science and M.A. in religious studies from Stanford University. Sramanera Chin Wei is not affiliated with the University.

Snjezana Akpinar, President, Ex Officio Dr. Snjezana Akpinar has been the President of the Dharma Realm Buddhist University since 1995. She is a native of former Yugoslavia, from what is now Croatia. Since the early nineties she has been an active faculty member of Dharma Realm Buddhist University and in that capacity also taught classes in comparative studies and interfaith dialogue at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. She graduated from the University of Belgrade and earned her doctorate in Ottoman Turkish Studies at the University of Istanbul. Snjezana Akpinar has published in Serbo-Croat, English and Turkish. Her most recent publication is on Islam and Modernity, published in Istanbul, Turkey. She also serves on the governing Board of Directors of DRBA, DRBU’s parent organization.

Cynthia Chang, Vice Chair Ms. Chang has served on the Los Gatos - Saratoga Joint Union High School District Board of Trustees as a publicly-elected member since 1998. She is also a self-employed CPA. She holds an MBA from California State University, Los Angeles. She is past President of the Asian Pacific Islander School Board Members Association and served on the Executive Board of “Building Bridges,” a Saratoga Rotary Club- sponsored project. Ms. Chang is not affiliated with the University.

Yu-Chung Chang Ms. Chang is an assistant professor in the mathematics department at Pasadena City College, where she has been teaching since 1996. She received her Ph.D. in applied mathematics from University of California Los Angeles. She then completed her postdoctoral work at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University and at the California Institute of Technology. Ms. Chang is not affiliated with the University.

Stacy Y. Chen Ms. Stacy Chen joined DRBU in 2010 as the Director of Summer Session and Short-term Programs where she coordinated summer monastic immersion sessions, practice retreats, and visiting scholars lecture series. Ms. Chen attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned her bachelor’s degree in Biology. She pursued her doctorate degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at the University of California, San Francisco. Ms. Chen is affiliated with the University as an Assistant Professor and the Associate Dean of Program Development.

John Chu Mr. John Chu has been serving as an administrator at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas since 1991. He also teaches at DRBU and the Developing Virtue Secondary Schools. Mr. Chu received his B.A. in Diplomacy and a M.A. in East Asian Studies from the National Chengchi University in Taiwan. Mr. Chu is affiliated with the University as a Lecturer in DRBU’s legacy programs. He serves on the governing Board of Directors of DRBA, DRBU’s parent organization.

Ming-Lu Huang Dr. Ming-Lu Huang is the medical director in cardiac surgery for both Garfield Medical Center in Monterey Park and Beverly Hospital in Montebello, California. Dr. Huang is also an Assistant Professor of Clinical Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine in University of Southern California. Dr. Huang has held several medical appointments in southern California throughout his distinguished career as a cardiothoracic surgeon. Dr. Huang is not affiliated with the University.

Terri Nicholson Under the direction of Venerable Master Hsuan Hua, Ms. Nicholson founded the Instilling Goodness Elementary School in 1976 and the Developing Virtue Secondary School in 1982. She served as Co- Principal of both schools until 1997. She currently teaches at the Oak Manor Elementary School. Ms. Nicholson holds a B.A. from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a M.A. from the Dharma Realm Buddhist University. She received her teaching credential from the Dominican University. Ms. Nicholson is not affiliated with the University.

Douglas Powers, Ex Officio Mr. Powers is the Vice President for Finance and Administration of the University. He has been teaching at DRBU since 1982. Earlier in his career, Mr. Powers was the director of the Buddhist Council for Refugee Rescue and Resettlement. In 2009, he retired from teaching at Berkeley High School after 30 years. Mr. Powers is another regular facilitator at the Berkeley student roundtable discussions and the CTTB Guan Yin sessions. Mr. Douglas Powers hold an M.A. from the Graduate Theological Union and a B.A. and an M.A.T. from the University of Redlands. He also serves on the governing Board of Directors of DRBA, DRBU’s parent organization.

Martin Verhoeven, Ex Officio Dr. Martin Verhoeven is the Dean of Academics of the University. When he was training under Venerable Master Hsuan Hua, Dr. Verhoeven undertook a three-year bowing pilgrimage dedicated to world peace. He has been teaching at DRBU since 1997. He is also an adjunct professor of history and phenomenology of religion at the Graduate Theological Union. Dr. Verhoeven has studied and lectured extensively throughout Asia, Europe, the United States, and Canada. He received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also serves on the governing Board of Directors of DRBA, DRBU’s parent organization

Barbara Waugh Ms. Waugh is a founding faculty member of the University. She first became involved with what is now Dharma Realm Buddhist Association in 1970 while studying at UC Berkeley. Since 1976, Ms. Waugh has taught at DRBU and has worked tirelessly with others on developing the University. In 2010, she retired from the Public Health Department of Mendocino County as a public health nurse to devote herself full-time to teaching Sanskrit and improving the Sanskrit curriculum at DRBA. She holds a B.A. and a M.A. from the University of California at Berkeley and a B.S.N. from the Pacific Union College. Ms. Waugh is affiliated with the University as a Professor.

Franklyn Wu Mr. Wu joined DRBU as an assistant professor in fall 2010. Previously, he was a research and development engineer with silicon chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices. Mr. Wu later joined SRIC-BI--a business consulting spin-off of Stanford Research Institute--as a consultant assisting Fortune 500 companies, non-profit organizations, and government agencies in the area of strategic planning, market analysis, and product and service development. At DRBU, Mr. Wu coordinates the university's accreditation efforts. He has a Master of Science in materials science and engineering from Stanford University, and a Joint Honour Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and physics from McGill University. Mr. Wu is affiliated with the University as an Assistant Professor. He also serves on the governing Board of Directors of DRBA, DRBU’s parent organization
