Read Full License Page 1/17 Abstract In this study we performed two common sleight of hand effects and their real transfer counterparts to non-magicians and to magicians with a diverse range of experience practicing magic. Although, as a group, magicians identied the sleights of hand as deceptive actions signicantly more than non- magicians; this ability was only evidenced in magicians with more than 5 years in the craft. However, unlike the rest of participants, experienced magicians had diculty in correctly pinpointing the location of the coin in one of the real transfers presented. We hypothesise that this might be due to the inherent ambiguity of this transfer, in which, contrary to the other real transfer performed, no clear perceptive clue is given in reference to the location of the coin. We suggest that extensive time practicing magic might have primed experienced magicians to anticipate foul play when observing ambiguous movements, even when the actions observed are genuine. Main Text Magicians use intricate techniques of deception that capitalise on the spectator’s blind spots in attention and perception and roadblocks in cognition (Clayton & Wilkins, 2019; Garcia-Pelegrin et al., 2020; Kuhn et al., 2008). -

The Official Newsletter of the Ann Arbor Magic Club / S.A.M 88 / I.B.M. 210 JULY 2016 President’s Corner. We have lost a faithful member of our club. Bob Waite, Sergeant-At-Arms for many years, passed away on June 25th. I’ve asked his close friend, and a past President of AAMC, to write a memorial for him: Bob "Patches" Waite, a long time friend in magic and clowning, passed away on June 25th, 2016 at the age of 85 after battling lung cancer for months. He will be dearly missed by those in the many organizations in which he participated, including the Ann Arbor Magic Club, the Clowns Around Redford, the Mid-West Clown Association and the Civil Air Patrol in which he was recently promoted to the rank of Major. I know that there were other organizations that he was a part of as well. Bob was an active adult leader in the Boy Scouts of America in the Redford area and a member of the Yankee Air Force which operates out of Willow Run Airport, restoring and preserving vintage aircraft. He was a supporter of the Parade Company in Detroit, helping maintain and prepare the floats for the Thanksgiving Day Parade. He would also appear as Patches the Clown at the Hob Nobble Gobble, a fund raising party before the parade. Bob truly loved the circus and was inspired to create his Hobo clown character by Emmet Kelly himself. There may have been a little influence from Red Skelton thrown in the mix too. -

Aimola Davies1,3* 1 Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK, 2 Crossmodal Research Laboratory, Oxford, UK, 3 The Australian National University, Canberra, ACT, Australia Drawing inspiration from sleight-of-hand magic tricks, we developed an experimental paradigm to investigate whether magicians’ misdirection techniques could be used to induce the misperception of “phantom” objects. While previous experiments investigating sleight-of-hand magic tricks have focused on creating false assumptions about the movement of an object in a scene, our experiment investigated creating Edited by: Gustav Kuhn, false assumptions about the presence of an object in a scene.
