Ena ključnih značilnosti irskega plesa je tog in nepremičen zgornji del telesa, medtem ko noge izvajajo serijo hitrih in ritmično raznolikih korakov.

The native people of Ireland experienced invasion and oppression for nearly a millennium, beginning with Viking invasions at the end of the 8th century and ending in the 1940s, when the British finally departed Ireland, now an independent country. During the years of English rule, the British imposed harsh laws and sought to eradicate all vestiges of Irish culture in an attempt to diminish Irish identity.

As a traditional dance form, Irish step dance lends itself to and is dependent upon innovation and change; it is a living and flexible art form, and thus, change is expected and necessary to keep it novel, fresh and progressive. However, its “traditional” signature is now a focus of debate as its “modern” signature gets explored and as traditional Irish dance scholars study the impact touring Irish dance shows have caused.

In their early forms, responses to global influences were embedded in Irish culture. Long before what is commonly called the age of globalization, Irish dance was already “proto-global” in its openness to the flow of cultural exchanges generated by people’s travel. This flow formed an interesting dialectic with cultural nationalism and endowed Irish dance with a national(ist) Received February 16, 2009; accepted July 3, 2009; last revised August 5, 2009 Proofreaders: Jeffrey Cuvilier, Yu-ting Lin, Chin-ying Tsai, Ying-tzu Chang * This paper is part of a research project (NSC 95-2411-H-110-018-MY3).
