Animating Social Pathology: Ontology, Aesthetics, and Cartoon Alienation by Wolfgang Boehm Under the Direction of Professor Greg Smith ABSTRACT This thesis grounds an unstable ontology in animation’s industrial history and its plas- matic aesthetics, in-so-doing I find animation to be a site of rendering visible a particular con- frontation with an inability to properly rationalize, ossify, or otherwise delimit traditionally held boundaries of motility. Because of this inability, animation is privileged as a form to rethink our interactions with media technology, leading to utopian thought and bizarre, pathological behav- ior. I follow the ontological trend through animation studies, using Pixar’s WALL-E as a guide. I explore animation as an afterimage of social pathology, which stands in contrast to the more lu- dic thought of a figure such as Sergei Eisenstein, using Black Mirror’s “The Waldo Moment.” I look to two Cartoon Network shows as examples of potential alternatives to both the utopian and pathological of the preceding chapters.

  • The Midpoint School Year Dear Parents/Guardians
1 QUARTERLY Issue NEWSLETTER FOR 02 TITUSVILLE MIDDLE 2019-2020 SCHOOL The MidPoint School Year Dear Parents/Guardians, It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through the 2019-2020 school year. As we enter into the second half of the year, Mr. Houck and I would like to concentrate on the positive opportunities set up for our students. We have numerous individuals within our building that are continually putting time and effort into providing learning experiences, academically and socially, appropriate for our students. The winter season has been a busy time among all grade levels. Students and teachers celebrated the holiday season through chorus and band concerts, movies within the school and 7th grade students traveled to the movie theatre to complete their unit on Star Wars. Wrestling and basketball have started their seasons and continue to stay busy competing in matches and games each week, with the cheer- leaders supporting them at all home events. Mr. Vetter has included our band into the mix and they attend and play at all home basketball games. We have had numerous positive comments on the team spirit we show at home games! Lastly, our students involved in the musical started practicing in January for our upcoming performance in March of Frozen. We want to just remind all parents of the multiple ways to stay connected to your child and the Middle School. We encourage you to communicate with your child and the school for any academic concerns, check PowerParent to stay up to date on grades and feel free to schedule a parent-teacher conference if you feel that it would help for a mid-year boost.

What Is Called Thinking with ShaXXXspeares and Walter Benjamin?: Managing De/Kon/struction, Toying with Letters in The Lego Movie Richard Burt Journal for Early Modern Cultural Studies, Volume 16, Number 3, Summer 2016, pp. 94-115 (Article) Published by University of Pennsylvania Press DOI: https://doi.org/10.1353/jem.2016.0023 For additional information about this article https://muse.jhu.edu/article/644115 Access provided by University of Florida Libraries (30 Sep 2017 17:13 GMT) What Is Called Tinking with ShaXXXspeares and Walter Benjamin? Managing De/Kon/struction, Toying with Letters in Te Lego Movie richard burt abstract Drawing on Paul de Man’s essay on Heinrich von Kleist’s Marionette Teater and on several essays by Walter Benjamin on puppets and toys, this essay explores Shakespeare’s appearance as a Master Builder in the Te Lego Movie, the LEGO Movie Videogame, several amateur YouTube videos of scenes from Shakespeare using Lego toys, a Shakespeare Lego action fgure, and a two volume Brick Shakespeare edition of eight plays using photographs of Lego models as characters. Te fgures of the puppet and the toy open up a perspective on the mimicry of stop- motion animation in Te Lego Movie and what German novelist Friedrich Teodor Vischer calls “Die Tücke des Objekts” (“the spite of objects”). With digital cinema, animation has re- gained the centrality it had before the advent of narrative cinema, the diference being that digital animation uses CGI whereas stop- motion animation requires the flmmaker to act as of- screen puppeteer. As a minor Master Builder engaged in awesome destruction, Te Lego Movie’s Shakespeare ofers a small- scale way of thinking the flm’s clever fetishization of what it calls the “piece of resistance.” Freud does not explicitly examine the status of the “materialized” supple- ment which is necessary to the alleged spontaneity of memory, even if that spontaneity were diferentiated in itself, thwarted by a censorship or re- pression which, moreover, could not act on a perfectly spontaneous mem- ory.

  • Adaptation in the Age of Media Convergence
    8. “Everything is Awesome:” Spreadability and The LEGO Movie Joyce Goggin Abstract This essay addresses The LEGO Movie as a transmedia text that references or includes a remarkable collection of characters and “bits” from other films and TV series. As I argue, the movie is assembled with a kind of cynical humour reminiscent of the exhausted irony described by David Foster Wallace, and effectively short-circuits possible critiques of the LEGO company itself, while presenting a Trumpian dictator who is plotting the end of the minifigures’ world. The essay also discusses the economy of transmedia storytelling and its characteristic diversification which mirrors LEGO’s own corporate strategy, thus making the LEGO business model cute and entertaining. Key words: LEGO; money; finance; irony; transmedia storytelling A Nobel prize, a piece of string You know what’s awesome? Everything […] Rocks, clocks, and socks, they’re awesome Figs, and wigs, and twigs, that’s awesome Everything you see or think or say is awesome Introduction The high-spirited affirmation that “everything is awesome” – the hook from the LEGO Movie’s (2014) academy-award-winning theme song – is a message that itself could mean just about “everything” and anything. From “rocks, clocks and socks” to “wigs and twigs,” the lyrics express not only one minifigure’s Fehrle, J. and W.
