PREFACE
This catalogue is one of a collection of special area data catalogues published periodically by the Canadian Marine Environmental Data Service.
Each catalogue is an inventory of oceanographic stations or bathythermographs displayed in one of two formats:
a) point plots of station location superimposed on computer-drawn coast-line charts. or b) counts of stations within degree-squares superimposed on computer-drawn coast-line charts.
Each catalogue represents coverage of a particular geographic area and time-frame. An index of the collection and the catalogues themselves are available on request.

INTRODUCTION
In 1973, the Marine Environmental Data Service was designated the regional data centre for physical oceanographic data for the International Commission for the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries (ICNAF). As such, it has a responsibility to compile and maintain data banks of physical oceanographic observations. Ultimately, it is hoped to use the data to study the variability in both time and space so that the variability in the physical environment can be related to variations in the fisheries.
A first step in studying time and space variability is to determine the time-space distrihution of the observations themselves. This report shows the location of oceanographic bottle stations by month for the ten year period from 1950 to 1959. The area north of 65' N (ICNAF areas lA, lB and part of 1C) has been excluded, mainly because of the scarcity of data in this region. Tbe monthly maps include all ofthe bottle stations presently within the MEDS data banks. Undouhtedly, additional data exists for this period; when MEDS receives substantial additions, these maps can be revised.
Each point on a map indicates the location of one or more oceanographic bottle stations, with samples at discrete intervals between the surface and bottom. Temperatures were usually measured by reversing thermometers, and salinities determined by titration. Many stations include other parameters. MEDS does basic quality control cheeks on the data, but their ultimate validity is the responsibility of the originator.
The maps are computer plots of the station positions on a Miller projection.
