Page, Jr. h e vast e x p a n se s of forest lands and waterways within the T boundaries of the State of Maine are regarded by many sports men as one of the last frontiers remaining on the American Conti nent. Despite the gradual encroachment of civilization upon her woods and waters, Maine, through a carefully planned conservation and stocking program, has worked with nature to maintain a favorable balance, assuring an abundance of game for any and all who wish to partake of the bountiful goodness of a peaceful vacation amidst the surroundings of nature’s own greenery. Proof of ‘good fishing’ in the Pine Tree State is in the records of Maine’s unique organization, “THE ONE THAT DIDN’T GET AWAY CLUB.” The only qualification for membership is to take a trophy-size fish from Maine waters. (Weight qualifications for the various species listed on inside back cover.) The requirements are stiff and the competition keen but to wear the shoulder patch of Maine’s One That Didn’t Get Away Club is the ambition of every angler in the country. The club was started in 1939 and had a total of only forty-five qualified members up until 1945. From that year on the member ship roster shows a rapid climb. Sixty-four were registered in ’49 and sixty-seven in ’50. During 1951 the impressive number of one hundred and three fish was reached. Although ’52 saw a drop to ninety-one, this past season, 1953, a new record was set with one hundred and seven trophy fish registered. These year to year records prove one thing —Maine fishing gets better every year. Heaviest fish of each species of the “Club” fish caught in 1953 were: Bass, 7 lb. 4 oz.; Landlocked Salmon, 11 lb. 8 oz.; Togue (Lake Trout), 23 lb. 4 oz.; Atlantic Salmon, 19 lb. 10 oz.; Brook

Trout, 6 lb. 15^2 o z . ; Brown Trout, 16 lb. 8 oz. and Rainbow Trout, 8 lb. Due to the unpredictables that make the sport what it is, big fish catches vary from year to year but Maine fish are either at, or

Just within the past five seasons Maine fish have captured nation-wide ‘firsts’ for four different species: LANDLOCKED SALMON, EASTERN BROOK TROUT, WHITE PERCH and ATLANTIC SALMON. Here is the record of the leading fish entered in the One That Didn’t Get Away Club over this period: ATLANTIC SALMON: 22 pounds, 6% ounces, measuring 39Vfe inches. TOGUE: 23 pounds, 4 ounces. (Taken in 1953.) BLACK BASS: 7 pounds, 4 ounces. (Taken in 1953.) WHITE PERCH: 4 pounds, 9 ounces, measuring 19i/2 inches. EASTERN BROOK TROUT: 7 pounds, 9 ounces. RAINBOW TROUT: 9 pounds, 8V2 ounces: BROWN TROUT: 19 pounds. Don’t forget to look over the qualifications for membership in Maine’s “ONE THAT DIDN’T GET AWAY CLUB” on the inside back cover. You may come home with a trophy fish and a member ship certificate in 1954.

Tel. 123 Rangeley, Maine FISHING IN MAINE 5 Fishing Everywhere—and In Variety In these days of increased interest in fishing and other forms of outdoor recreation, as more and more demands are made upon nat ural resources all over the Nation, Maine stands in an enviable posi tion. In many states and areas only the members of private clubs who pay substantial sums of money to maintain privately owned fishing waters can expect to enjoy real fishing. Here in Maine, this practice is almost unknown. Any man, woman or child, whether resident or non-resident, may, after being licensed at a moderate fee (children under ten need no license), try his luck in the crystal-clear waters of an unspoiled area nearly as large as all the rest of New England combined! Not only can he try his luck, but with any reasonable degree of skill he can be pretty sure of results to make him proud. In fact, Lady Luck usually smiles on even the most inexperienced of fisher men if he’ll take the time to expose himself properly to the fish in these Maine waters. Variety is but one of the rare pleasures Maine has in store for all

Whether it’s fishing for giant Tuna weighing up to 1,200 pounds, Striped Bass, Mackerel, Halibut, Swordfish, Cod, Haddock, Pollock, Flounders or just plain pole and handline fishing from the wharves or rugged shoreline, everyone can enjoy saltwater fishing anywhere along the spacious Maine Coast. WHEN TO COME—WHAT TO USE Landlocked Salmon Maine’s Landlocked Salmon are ready for action the minute the ice leaves lakes and ponds in the Spring. This ice break-up usually occurs between the first of April and the middle of May each year, depending upon weather conditions. Maine regulations allow fish ing in several southern counties starting April 1, or any time there after that the ice is officially declared “out.” In other counties to the north, “opening day” comes on April 15. Full particulars on these and all other fresh-water fishing regulations are prepared in booklet form and will be gladly supplied upon request by the Maine Publicity Bureau. In the early part of the fishing season, millions of fresh-water smelts, a favorite food of the Landlocked Salmon, move toward the mouths of tributary streams and over shallow sand bars in their annual Spring spawning run. At this time the salmon crowd in close to shore to feed on these silvery little fish. During this period streamer flies, sewed-on smelts, wobbling artificial minnows and, in MIGIS LODGE ON SEBAGO LAKE Main Lodge with modern comfortable cabins • Food you will remember Guides Good boats Bait American Plan Write for booklet and rates OPEN LATE APRIL THROUGH SEPTEMBER Sherman K. Fly fishing with wet flies of the conventional type as well as many patterns of streamer fly design also work exceptionally well at this time. Later, as the season progresses and temperatures rise, the salmon move back, seeking cooler areas in the deep water. From the hot days of late June until the crisp frosty mornings of early Sep tember, trolling with deep-going revolving spoons and live bait usually accounts for excellent catches. Smelts, shiners, angle worms and large night crawlers are the choice of many successful fisher men. Cooler surface temperatures during September again bring these silversided battlers near the surface and once more fly fishing close to the mouths of incoming streams is at its best, with both wet and dry flies productive as the Salmon congregate for their own fall spawning run. Don’t underestimate white perch when it comes to fly fishing or trolling either. Almost any of the baits men tioned above trolled just behind one or two small gold or silver colored spinners will help to fill the frying pan. White Perch are an “all season fish,” but afford the best fishing of all during the warmer days of mid-Summer. Pickerel For real honest-to-goodness everyday outdoor sport, don’t over look the countless hours of fun to be had PICKEREL FISHING. Shallow water ponds, slow moving streams and deep bays heavy with lily pads and other vegetation are the home of this hungry feeder. Frowned upon by some but ready to charge at almost any moving object, the Pickerel is among the easiest of all fish to land. Live bait, flies, plugs, popping-bugs or trolling spoons, whether manipulated by an expensive rod or an old cane pole, bring equally good results in Pickerel waters. Here’s a rough and ready fish, a challenge to the beginner, the expert, the old folks or the kids. He’s what might be called a dependable fish. It may be fished starting May 1 until September 15. Part of the river is open until September 30. The Narraguagus, Dennys and the other rivers mentioned above are increasing their yield each year under the careful supervision of the Atlantic Sea Run Salmon Commission. Slightly different regulations apply when fishing each and a pre pared booklet describing these rules will be furnished upon request by the Maine Publicity Bureau. Atlantic Salmon in these rivers vary from eight to nearly thirty pounds in weight. Probably the fishing is the “hottest,” as Maine natives say, between May 15 and the end of June. Between the first of July and the end of August, thousands of these gigantic bluefins move into Maine coastal waters. Top-weight tuna to be taken on rod and reel so far, chalked up an official mark of 874 pounds. These mammoth silvery fish may also be caught by handline fishing or harpooning. Special heavy-duty equipment is needed to go after tuna, but it’s not at all necessary to own your own to try this thrilling sport in Maine. Charter boats manned by competent “Down-east” skippers are ready not only to serve you but to furnish all necessary tackle, gear and bait at moderate cost. Don’t miss the thrill of a lifetim e! Probably more are taken by trolling than by any other method. A standard “salt-water rod” weighing 10 or 12 ounces, 30-lb. test line and reel of ample capacity should make up the back bone of your equipment. Use of regular striped bass lures as manufactured by several well-known companies, to which live bait has been added is the next step. Sandworms, bloodworms, small eels, small herring and occa sionally shrimps make good bait to troll with both standard fresh water spoons or regular striped bass lures. Careful attention to water currents and the fishing of “the rips” during an incoming tide often make the difference between failure and success. Once connected with even a fair-sized striper, you’ll be spending lots of time in those waters again. The salt-water angler in Maine isn’t forced to confine his activi ties to tuna and striped bass fishing—not by a long shot!

Descriptive folder NORTH NEW PORTLAND, ME. FISHING IN MAINE 27 School Fish Mackerel and Pollock run in tremendous schools along the Maine Coast during summer months. Spinners, flies or even a piece of red or white cloth attached to a hook will often do the trick. This sketchy equipment, trolled either through or near these schools will almost always take fish as fast as they can be removed from the hook. This may sound surprising, but it works—and there’s action a-plenty to be had with the use of either a handline or a light rod and reel! NO LICENSE is needed for saltwater fishing along the Maine Coast, whether from the docks, mainland, islands or boats. Handline and pole fishing from wharves, bridges and the shore for flounders, cunners, mackerel and rock-cod are enjoyed by thou sands of men, women and children all through the Summer and Fall. Many “partyboats” lie ready at Maine harbors and ports to take out fishing parties seeking cod, haddock, pollock and other fish, or just for a cooling day’s cruise along the shore among the hundreds of green-studded islands that dot the rugged coast between mainland and the open sea. Fishing lines, bait and all tackle are furnished if desired. Arrangements may easily be made for a picnic lunch or a famous Maine Clambake on the shore of some nearby wooded island. If you’ve never tasted lobsters, clams and roasted corn, cooked out doors— Maine Clambake Style — then DON’T MISS IT THIS YEAR! Once you’ve had a taste, we know you’ll be back again and again! Tackle Available Many inland sporting camps, hotels and resorts furnish fishing tackle for guests. Practically all of them will arrange for guides, outboard motors, boats and bait if desired. Your own tackle is prob ably adaptable to many kinds of Maine fishing. If you think it isn’t, don’t worry. Supplies of all types, including the latest lures and equipment are available on the spot in nearly all Maine communities. For early Spring fishing and Fall fishing in Maine, plenty of warm but light clothing should be worn. A waterproof rain slicker with hood or hat are welcome assets when the fish start to hit dur ing a shower. Wool socks of knee length and waterproof footwear also are recommended and, of course, waders or hip boots for stream fishing. Lightweight, washable informal summer clothing of sports design is appropriate at all Maine spots where fishing is in vogue. Even during the warmer days of Summer, Maine nights are cool. It is therefore an excellent idea to bring along an extra sweater or a couple of wool shirts to enjoy the greatest comfort at all times.

Its membership, at the close of the 1953 season included 107 new enthusiastic Maine and out-of- State anglers. All you must do to join this exclusive group and receive a certificate of membership signed by the Governor of Maine is to catch a big fish in accordance with the following rules and file a formal application for membership with the Maine Development Commission, State House, Augusta, Maine. RULES 1. Membership open to anyone holding a Maine fishing license who catches a LANDLOCKED SALMON weighing ten or more pounds, a TROUT weighing six or more pounds, a BLACK BASS weighing five or more pounds, a TOGUE (lake trout) weighing fifteen or more pounds, an ATLANTIC SALMON weighing fifteen or more pounds, or a WHITE PERCH weighing three pounds. 2. Entries are limited to fish taken in the State of Maine in accordance with the state fishing laws. 3. Fish taken from a state, club, or private hatchery or pool, or taken through the ice, will not be eligible. 4. Weight of fish and other pertinent information must be certified by a Warden of the Inland Fisheries and Game Department. (There are more than one hundred of these men on duty in the State. Your camp owner or guide will gladly put you in touch with one.) STOREHSE 799.1 P132f 1954
