Finally, I would like to express my appreciation to my father who had a dream to see me complete my PhD from the UK that was my motivation to pursue this doctoral research. iv SUMMARY The aim of this research is to provide an ethnographic account of the Tablighi Jamaat, a transnational Islamic reform movement, which originated in India in the 1920s. The movement claims to reinforce faith by preaching among Muslims. Tablighi Jamaat is now operative in 165 countriess with about 80 million followers around the world. This study looks at the Tablighi Jamaat in two very different contexts, Bangladesh and the United Kingdom (UK), where the Tablighi Jamaat has been successful. In Bangladesh, the Tablighi Jamaat is a very large-scale movement where several million people attend the annual congregation (Bishwa Ijtema) of the Tablighi Jamaat every year. The UK has a much smaller following of the Tablighi Jamaat than Bangladesh. There are perhaps 50,000 active Tablighi Jamaat followers in the UK. This ethnographic study shows that the success of the Tablighi Jamaat results from the positive image, which it cultivates, and the systematic preaching activities of Tablighi Jamaat followers. The organisation’s apolitical image, the public profile of the ijtema, the humbleness in personality and behaviour of Tablighi followers, and the attraction of belonging to the global Tablighi community, all assist to create a positive image of the Tablighi Jamaat among ordinary Muslims. In addition, family and peer pressure, and a variety of personal reasons explain why people join the movement. v In the thesis, I also argue that the Tablighi Jamaat remains successful because of its ability to hold its followers (both new and long-term) within a Tablighi-guided life. A Tablighi-guided life is perceived as a protection against the Western lifestyle. Followers define many elements of contemporary Western lifestyle as non-Islamic. North South University Mehree Iqbal North South University ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to draw special attention to Bangladesh as one of the potential markets where the concept of Halal ecosystem can be developed. An overview of this dynamic concept, followed by the current stance, challenges and future outlook of Bangladesh regarding Halal ecosystem is thereby described. This study applies content analysis to identify general trends and research results of Halal ecosystem in a descriptive form. Using secondary sources, it also provides future directions for both Bangladesh and the global context. Government support and regulatory frameworks are crucial at this stage to strengthen confidence amongst consumers, industry players and investors regarding Halal ecosystem in Bangladesh. Moreover, regional and global arrangements for Halal certifications are necessary to fully embrace this concept in Bangladesh and beyond. However, lack of empirical data and research on Halal ecosystem limits the intensity of arguments in this study. Besides, absence of proper information regarding Halal certifications, database of companies involved in this dynamic process and initiatives of government and regulatory bodies in Bangladesh further hinder the presentation of a wholesome picture of Halal ecosystem. Accepted 23 April, 2012 The purpose of this study was to assess the degree of pollution of Turag river water by determining various physico-chemical parameters. Water samples were collected six times per year during wet and dry season at the following three locations: Tongi Railway Bridge, Bishwa Ijtema field and Ashulia. Most of the measured physicochemical parameters exceeded permissible limit of drinking water. The recorded pH ranged from 6.6 to 7.98 and Electrical Conductivity (EC) from 160 to 1107 µs/cm. The recorded dissolve oxygen (DO) varied from 0.11 to 6.8 mg/L and biological oxygen demand (BOD) ranged from 10 to 180 mg/L while chemical oxygen demand ranged from 21 to 220 mg/L and free CO2 value from 5 to 22 mg/L. The concentration ranges of heavy metals and arsenic in ppb were as follows: Zinc (Zn) (0.04 to 0.4), cadmium (Cd) (0.043 to 2), arsenic (As) (1.15 to 4.8), (lead) Pb (2.29 to 18.62) and mercury (Hg) (0.12 to 1.45).

It is the world’s eighth most populous country, with approximately 160 million people housed in a land mass about the size of Iowa. It is a poor nation and suffers from high levels of corruption and a faltering democratic system that has been subject to an array of pressures in recent years. These pressures include a combination of political violence, corruption, weak governance, poverty, demographic and environmental stress, and Islamist militancy. The United States has long-standing supportive relations with Bangladesh and views Bangladesh as a moderate voice in the Islamic world. The U.S. government and Members of Congress have focused on issues related to economic development, humanitarian concerns, labor rights, human rights, good governance, and counterterrorism among other issues as part of the United States’ bilateral relationship with Bangladesh. The Awami League (AL) and the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) dominate Bangladeshi politics. When in opposition, both parties have sought to regain control of the government through demonstrations, labor strikes, and transport blockades. Such mass protests are known as hartals in South Asia. The current AL government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was reelected in January 2014 with an overwhelming majority in parliament. Hasina has been in office since 2009.

The statement fits like a glove to Pakistan’s counterterrorism approach that is characterized by a lack of innovation and creativity. Many believe that Islamabad lacks a coherent and comprehensive strategy to stem the rising tide of religious militancy and fight the menace of terrorism. But the government cites as proof of its commitment the establishment of National Counterterrorism Authority (NACTA) to examine the problem and devise a viable policy. It is not clear how much time NACTA would take to accomplish this job and, more importantly, if it would be able to rescue the country’s security doctrine from shadows of the Soviet-Afghan war. Pakistan’s present security narrative was developed in the context of that conflict, making it convenient for the defense establishment and the political administration to blame all domestic problems on external forces and factors. This approach has failed to evolve in synch with emerging threats. The country’s militant landscape has changed significantly in recent years, with militant strands such as the Punjabi Taliban posing new and increasingly worrying challenges for the state.
