Attention all scalliwags and explorers: Are your kids interested in sailing the seven seas, swinging on a rope, dropping into the sea, and building their own pirate ship? The life of a pirate is not for the couch-potato - get up and be active this summer at Airborne! Every day is a new adventure, and a new pirate joke of course! Monday: What does it take to be a Pirate? Campers will pick out their very own pirate name, and add their name to the crew list. Now that the campers are official Pirates, it’s time for them to explore some of the physical tasks pirates have to do. Using the different equipment like the ropes, trampoline, bars, ladders and balance beams we will learn how to climb, jump, swing and balance (for sword fighting) like a pirate. Each camper will get a turn to complete the Pirate Agility Obstacle Course, that includes each of these tasks, to earn gold coins. Tuesday: Battle at Sea! Pirates face so many challenges… can you get around with only one leg? Can you walk the plank without falling in? Can you defend your ship and sink the other ships in return? Can you earn your golden treasure? Come and sail the friendly seas, if you dare! Arrr! Wednesday: Building a Pirate Ship! Campers will learn about all the different parts of a pirate ship and then work as a crew and build their very own ship. -

‘A Man of Courage and Activity’: Thomas Tew and Pirate Settlements of the Indo - Atlantic Trade World, 1645 -1730 1 Kevin McDonald Department of History University of California, Santa Cruz “The sea is everything it is said to be: it provides unity, transport , the means of exchange and intercourse, if man is prepared to make an effort and pay a price.” – Fernand Braudel In the summer of 1694, Thomas Tew, an infamous Anglo -American pirate, was observed riding comfortably in the open coach of New York’s only six -horse carriage with Benjamin Fletcher, the colonel -governor of the colony. 2 Throughout the far -flung English empire, especially during the seventeenth century, associations between colonial administrators and pirates were de rig ueur, and in this regard , New York was similar to many of her sister colonies. In the developing Atlantic world, pirates were often commissioned as privateers and functioned both as a first line of defense against seaborne attack from imperial foes and as essential economic contributors in the oft -depressed colonies. In the latter half of the seventeenth century, moreover, colonial pirates and privateers became important transcultural brokers in the Indian Ocean region, spanning the globe to form an Indo-Atlantic trade network be tween North America and Madagascar. Digitizing the Pyrates: Making a Digital Critical Edition of Captain Charles Johnson’s A General History of the Pyrates (1724-1726) by Ingrid Reiche A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in The Collaborative Program in the Digital Humanities and English Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2016, Ingrid Reiche Reiche ii Abstract Critical editing in a digital environment has changed how bibliographic practices are employed. This thesis investigates how digital critical editing impacts eighteenth- century literary studies. The way scholars examine questions of author attribution and employ bibliography practices has changed with the advent of digital tools. Since the mid nineteen-nineties, digital editing has taken on various forms, from hypermedia archives to crowdsourced projects. A critical apparatus that provides a high-level of interactivity to elucidate the intricacies of a text over its production in a given time is often overlooked in these projects. By producing a digital edition that compares the first four editions of A General History of the Pyrates (1724-26) using the Versioning Machine V.4.0 and conducting a user experience survey regarding the edition’s functionality (both are at http://ingridreiche.com/Resume/Thesis.html), the goal of this project has been to show how eighteenth-century print culture was a highly collaborative space where authorship was unstable. GOING ON THE ACCOUNT: EXAMINING GOLDEN AGE PIRATES AS A DISTINCT CULTURE THROUGH ARTIFACT PATTERNING by Courtney E. Page December, 2014 Director of Thesis: Dr. Charles R. Ewen Major Department: Anthropology Pirates of the Golden Age (1650-1726) have become the stuff of legend. The way they looked and acted has been variously recorded through the centuries, slowly morphing them into the pirates of today’s fiction. Yet, many of the behaviors that create these images do not preserve in the archaeological environment and are just not good indicators of a pirate. Piracy is an illegal act and as a physical activity, does not survive directly in the archaeological record, making it difficult to study pirates as a distinct maritime culture. This thesis examines the use of artifact patterning to illuminate behavioral differences between pirates and other sailors. A framework for a model reflecting the patterns of artifacts found on pirate shipwrecks is presented. Artifacts from two early eighteenth century British pirate wrecks, Queen Anne’s Revenge (1718) and Whydah (1717) were categorized into five groups reflecting behavior onboard the ship, and frequencies for each group within each assemblage were obtained. The same was done for a British Naval vessel, HMS Invincible (1758), and a merchant vessel, the slaver Henrietta Marie (1699) for comparative purposes. There are not enough data at this time to predict a “pirate pattern” for identifying pirates archaeologically, and many uncontrollable factors negatively impact the data that are available, making a study of artifact frequencies difficult. This research does, however, help to reveal avenues of further study for describing this intriguing sub-culture. -

Chapter 1 Of Pirates and Nazis: Introducing the “Piracy Analogy” [T]he substantive basis underlying the exercise of universal jurisdiction in respect of the crime of piracy also justifies its exercise in regard to the crimes with which we are dealing in this case.1 ∵ These words, proclaimed by the Supreme Court of Israel in the 1961 Eichmann case, mark a watershed moment in the history of international criminal jus- tice.2 Seeking to justify the controversial arrest and prosecution of Nazi logisti- cian Adolf Eichmann to a global audience, the Court redefined their suspect as a “pirate”, an “enemy of all mankind”3 against whose punishment none could object. It is a comparison that might not immediately seem appropriate. Adolf Eichmann – a lieutenant colonel in the Schutzstaffel (more commonly known by the abbreviation “SS”) and “an expert on the Jewish question”4 – had fa- cilitated The Holocaust by overseeing the transfer of six million Jews to Nazi concentration camps during the 1940s.5 Standing before a court room in 1 Supreme Court of Israel, Eichmann v. For Immediate Release Oct. 3, 2014 Pirates to descend on Ocracoke for Blackbeard’s Pirate Jamboree Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 From the Ocracoke Observer, Oct. 2014 Madame Grace of Blackbeard’s Pirate Crew says the purpose of their living history encampments is to ignite peoples’ imaginations, and that’s what they will do the weekend of Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 during the Second Annual Blackbeard’s Pirate Jamboree throughout the village. The Crew, from Hampton, Va., will camp the weekend in the yard of the Wahab House, 161 Irvin Garrish Highway. This free, family-friendly event kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 in the Ocracoke Community Center at where author-historian Kevin Duffus of Raleigh will test attendees’ knowledge of the infamous brigand in a game show format. A $10 donation will be asked and will include beer and non-alcoholic beverages. Duffus will ask competing teams of about historical (or hysterical) statements on Blackbeard from actual published accounts. “Blackbeard’s history has been badly distorted,” explains the author of “The Last Days of Black Beard the Pirate.” Following the game show, The Motley Tones, the minstrel group that was such a hit at last year’s event, will sing seafaing and piracy songs from the ‘60, ‘70s and ‘80s--that is, the 1760s, 1770s and 1780s. Saturday morning, the jamboree will begin at 10 a.m. with pirates on period ships shooting at pirates on the land. Other professional pirate crews attending include Captain Horatio Sinbad on his period brigantine the Meka II; the Ada Mae, a skipjack from New Bern; the Beaufort Oars in their sloop The Ranger; the Sea Scouts, a group of youths ages 14 to 20; The Shadow Players, a stage combat group from Raleigh and Chris Suttle, who will portray Blackbeard. -

He was a sailor in the Royal Navy but then he became a pirate. He joined the crew of a pirate called Benjamin Hornigold who gave him his own ship which he called Queen Anne’s revenge. To attack ships, they raised a false flag to pretend they were nice and friendly but when they got close they would raise Blackbeard’s flag and attack! Blackbeard twisted pieces of burning rope in his beard so that he appeared in a thick cloud of black smoke. Blackbeard had 14 wives but he did not treat them very well. He also left 15 of his crew members stranded on an island and took their share of the treasure. Blackbeard was killed in battle with a man called Robert Maynard. This man cut off Blackbeard’s head and tied it to his ship as a warning to other pirates not to mess with him! 1. What job did Blackbeard have before he became a pirate? 2.
