Almost 40 people from several Countries attended. The theoretical part focused on a multidisciplinary mix of neurophysiology, complexity, biology, urban sociology and service design so to encourage people thinking out of the box about urban design, and considering the relevance of body, senses, locality, and real people needs. The practical workshop was directed by professor Marco Casagrande, who encouraged students to get in touch with the local environment in order to “become by doing” and act accordingly to what they had learned. Here’s the list of the teaching staff and of the participants: • Philosopher and psychologist Stefano Serafini (I.S.B., Italy) introduced the use of environmental psychology and post-darwinian biological theories to re-orient the approach to design. • Artist and architect prof. Marco Casagrande (Ruin Academy, Finland/Taiwan) led hand- building experiences after listening to the city’s organism (biourban acupuncture). • Design thinker and architect Yulia Kryazheva (Yulia Ink., The Netherlands) introduced the use of sketching & drawing as a tool to get in touch with the complexity of a place. • Professor Antonio Caperna (I.S.B.,Italy),architect,and professor Eleni Tracada (University of Derby, UK), architect, introduced and showed practical examples of Biourbanism and algorithmic sustainable design.

Pier 92 is a visual hub, it connects vantage points along major roads and bridges, but it is not a setting that one typically associates with art. It is hiding in plain sight – a remnant of an era that is fading from collective memory. In contrast, a major artwork that engages the silos can be a potent symbol of change for the community: the artwork itself can be an axis on which the past pivots to become the future. If we understand the surrounding neighborhood as an organism, art can serve as “urban acupuncture” (a concept originated by urban theorist Marco Casagrande), a tactical needle prick to the body of the City, the effects of which will ripple through Bayview.

    Marco Casagrande Marco Casagrande (født 7. mai 1971 i Åbo, Finland) er en finsk arkitekt, forfatter og professor i arkitektur. Han ble uteksaminert fra Tekniska högskolan i Helsingfors, avdeling for arkitektur i 2001. sammen med sin daværende partner Sami Rintala ble de i 1999 kåret til finalister i Architecural Review's konkurranse «Emerging Architecture» og ble etter dette invitert til biennalen i Venezia, hvor deres arbeid «60 Minute Man», ble av New York Times reporter kåret til hans personlige favoritt. En eikeskog, plantet i en forlatt lekter fylt med kompostert «human waste» tilsvarende hva Venezias produserer i løpet av 60 minutter dannet rammen for dette arbeidet.
