Maha-Shivaratri Festival Maha Shivaratri
Maha-Shivaratri Festival Maha Shivaratri Maha Shivaratri a Hindu festival celebrated annually in honour of the god Shiva. There is a Shivaratri in every luni-solar month of the Hindu calendar, on the month's 13th night/14th day, but once a year in late winter (February/March, or Magha) and before the arrival of Summer, marks Maha Shivaratri which means "the Great Night of Shiva". It is a major festival in Hinduism, this festival is solemn and marks a remembrance of "overcoming darkness and ignorance" in life and the world. It is observed by remembering Shiva and chanting prayers, fasting, doing Yoga, and meditating on ethics and virtues such as self-restraint, honesty, noninjury to others, forgiveness, and the discovery of Shiva. The ardent devotees keep awake all night. Others visit one of the Shiva temples or go on pilgrimage to Jyotirlingams. This is an ancient Hindu festival whose origin date is unknown. In Kashmir Shaivism, the festival is called Har-ratri or phonetically simpler Haerath or Herath by Shiva faithfuls of the Kashmir region. Description A festival of contemplation During the Vigil Night of Shiva, Mahashivaratri, we are brought to the moment of interval between destruction and regeneration; it symbolizes the night when we must contemplate on that which watches the growth out of the decay. During Mahashivaratri we have to be alone with our sword, the Shiva in us. We have to look behind and before, to see what evil needs eradicating from our heart, what growth of virtue we need to encourage. Shiva is not only outside of us but within us.

The Arrowhead street is improved with pathways and street lights on either side, The landscaped parking on the south lot along with walkways for pedestrians are complete. The administrative building is scheduled to be complete before mid-April. It will house Temple office, space for devotee amenities (like shoes etc.,), rest rooms, Conference rooms, Youth and energy area (with media and servers etc) and an area where devotees could celebrate their family Hindu religious functions like Namakaranam, Annaprasana, Satyannarayana Puja/seva, engagement, Birthday, etc., for a reasonable suggested donation. The new & integrated Devotee and Naivedyam kitchens, Library, Class rooms, Storage areas, Additional Restrooms, green-rooms for Men and Women, Devotee Puja performing areas are all on their way to be ready in the north-lot behind the main temple and they are on schedule to complete before July of this year.

PAPER 6 DANCE IN INDIA TODAY, DANCE-DRAMAS, CREATIVITY WITHIN THE CLASSICAL FORMS, INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCE IN DIASPORA (USA, UK, EUROPE, AUSTRALIA, ETC.) MODULE 35 INDIAN DANCE IN CIS STATES The strong presence of Indian classical dance is noticeable not just in Russia but equally in the CIS states that broke out from the former Soviet Union. Here too the lead has been taken by ICCR scholars who have been to India and trained long and truly love the art. Azerbaijan: Take the case of Azerbaijan, where Oksana Rusulova is trained in the Indian classical dance of Bharatanatyam. Though born in Shabran a town in the erstwhile Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan, in her childhood she moved to Russia and there she learnt Bharatanatyam. In 2001 she created Chandramukhi Dance group and choreographed several pieces. This fluent speaker of Hindi, Azerbaijani and Russian, she won a talent show on a popular TV Channel, and was honoured with a statuette as a ‘Goddess of dance’ by the Indian embassy in Azerbaijan. Ukraine: In 1992 Olena Ryzhei founded the club of Indian dance “Saraswati” in Kiev, and later the Saraswati Indian dance school. Olena had 1 graduated from Ganesha Natyalaya institute of music and dance, New Delhi, India as ICCR scholar under guidance of Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan, recipient of the Padmabhushan. The main purpose behind opening this institute is to create a center that would be a crucible of Indian culture, a seat of learning the arts and about the culture of India, “a gift of ancient India to Ukraine”, holds Indian festivals in an environment in which even the local Indian community feels at home.

A meeting of CFPGS was held on 5th to 8th October, 2020 under the Chairmanship of Smt. Amita Prasad Sarbhai, Joint Secretary (P.Arts & ZCC Bureau) to consider the proposal for financial assistance by the Expert Committee. 2. Under CFPGS Scheme Financial Assistance is given to ‘Not for Profit’ organisations, NGOs including Societies, Trusts, and Universities, for holding Conferences, Seminar, Workshops, Festivals, Exhibitions, Production of Dance, Drama-Theatre, Music and undertaking small research projects etc, on any art forms/important cultural matters relating to different aspects of Indian Culture. The quantum of assistance is restricted to 75% of the total project cost subject to maximum Rs. 5.00 Lakhs per project as recommend by the Expert Committee. In exceptional circumstances Financial Assistance may be given upto Rs. 20.00 Lakhs with the approval of Hon`ble Minister of Culture. 3. The Expert Committee examined a total of 1880 applications in its meeting held during 5th to 8th October, 2020 and after examining each and every proposal individually, has recommended 1001 proposals for financial assistance under the scheme. The details of 1001 cases approved for grant is placed at Annexure-I. The list of 729 cases not approved for grant is at Annexure-II. SPECIAL FEATURE B.M. SUNDARAM Beautiful contributions to music and dance A. Sambandam “Invited Audience” programmes in many towns. While serving in AIR-Pondicherry, he organised several music recitals on the sixth day of the Natyanjali Festival after five days of dance programmes at the Chidambaram Nataraja temple. For as long as he was in AIR, these programmes were an annual feature. He was a guest lecturer of Indian Music at Wheaton University, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Though he wrote monologues and submitted papers on various aspects of music, he first authored Palai Azhi (on the ascents and descents of more than 4000 raga scales). Most of his works were written and published only after he retired from All India Radio. He might have collected the details and information for these books even while he was in service but the books were printed later. His writings can be classified broadly into two categories – musicological and historical. Books such as Palai Azhi, Tala Sangraha and Tana Varna Tarangini are writings on the grammar of music. In Tala Sangraha, he has given the details of some 1100 talas, while Tana Varna Tarangini deals with 880 varnams (with all available pathantara variations). BMS himself has composed 22 tana varnams. M. Sundaram is hailed as a multilinguist, research scholar, In the second category, he wrote books containing hundreds of Bmusicologist, writer, composer and brief biographies. The Small Town of Chidambaram Chidambaram Is a Small Town But
The Small Town Of Chidambaram by newsdesk Chidambaram is a small town but is the highlight of the temple circuit because of its famous shrine to the Dancing Destroyer. No, not some hulk but the Nataraja, which is the form of the Hindu god Shiva, as he performs the devastating dance of death. Part of the divine trinity that otherwise includes Brahma the Creator and Vishnu the Preserver, it is Lord Shiva on whom is enjoined the task of Apocalypse. Chidambaram is an important destination for followers of the Hindu god Shiva and exponent of the fearsome, frenzied Tandav Nritya or the dance of destruction. At the centre of the town is the large Natraj Temple complex dedicated to Shiva as the divine dancer or Natraj, the foremost of all dancers. Spread out over 40 acres this complex, dedicated to the god who is usually represented by the phallic symbol, houses other temples, a tank, and the 'thousand pillared hall’. Non-Hindus are allowed into the complex but not the gold plated sanctum sanctorum that houses the idol. The Natyanjali Dance Festival is held on the temple grounds in February with performances by eminent dancers. There is a 13th century Kali Temple on the outskirts of the town. 50 km from Chidambaram is Gangaikondas Cholapuram, at one time the capital of the Chola kingdom. It has a Shiva temple that is noted for its hugeness and the rich carvings on the walls of demi-gods in dancing positions. A huge Nandi bull guards the entrance, and there is a lion-head step well in the complex.

He began his dance career at the age of seven under Padmabhushan Guru Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam of the Kuchipudi Art Academy, Chennai. In the 18 years he trained under his guru, he became an accomplished dancer with an uncanny understanding of the nuances of the art. Mastering the intricacies of the Kuchipudi style, Jaikishore excelled in important roles in his guru's ballets and solo performances. His technical perfection, incomparable flexibility, and complete transformation into the character he depicted won him patronising reviews and accolades. In recognition as an excellent performer and an understanding teacher, Jaikishore was awarded the title 'NATYA VISHAARADA,' by Kuchipudi Arts Academy in March 1999, and the title of ‘YUVA KALA VIPANCHEE’ by the Vipanchee Trust headed by PadmaVibhushan Dr. M. Balamurali Krishna in December 2004. Jaikishore is highly regarded by students and teachers alike for his inspiring teaching methods. He served as a teacher at the Kuchipudi Art Academy for four years, from 1996 and 2000. Since 1996, he has traveled to the United States every year to conduct workshops at established Kuchipudi schools . On his own since 2000, he primarily teaches in the Chennai area, training young upcoming artists as well as prominent dancers well established in the field. With an uncompromising insistence on proper form and technique, Kishore seeks to impart to his students a deep understanding of the various components that constitute every movement and gesture in dance.
