Centralia College is committed to student success, academic excellence, and supporting the community in an inclusive and equitable learning environment. Outstanding Students, as living examples of the Centralia College mission, are chosen each year for overcoming obstacles in the pursuit of their degree, for achieving their educational goals, and for being an active and engaged member of the college community.
Noah Bryerton served as the Vice President of the Student Advocacy Activities Leadership Team in 2020-21. He is captain of the baseball team and served on the Budget Review and Planning, Sports Hall of Fame, and Multipurpose Field committees. He is also volunteer with Bethel Church and helps serve meals at their downtown Centralia location. Jay Caird is a Student Ambassador and student mentor in Blazer Central. He is the president of the CC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the national honors society for two-year college students, and was recently honored as a member of the 2021 All-Washington Academic Team. Joey Navarro started at CC to earn his high school diploma and is now graduating with his associate degree. He previously served as a student mentor in Blazer Central and, earlier this spring, began working as a navigator in CC’s new program for incarcerated youth at Green Hill School. Fred Ross founded and serves as president of the Data Science Club and Spilled Ink Literary and Arts Journal. He also serves as the recording officer for Phi Theta Kappa and is a member of the Environmen- tal Science Club. He previously mentored students through the M2IND Initiative Program and provided tutoring in the STEM Tutoring Center. He currently works as a TRiO tutor.
Shane Sweetman has been attending classes at CC through Cedar Creek Corrections Center for the past two years. He has taken many vocational classes, earned his GED, and is now working toward an associate degree. He has been advocating for other incarcerated individuals and, earlier this year, testified in front of the legislature three times about the impact of college education in prison.
Haylee Ward is the ASCC president and captain of the soccer team. She serves on the college’s Institution- al Effectiveness and Guided Pathways committees. In addition, she is an active member of the Speech Club and the winner of the 2020 Statewide Inspirational Speech Championship.

The Watterson Family For the first time in award history, a family has been named the recipient of the annual Distinguished Alumni Award from the Centralia College Foundation. All four Watterson siblings – Ed, Bill, Marilyn, and Jim – attended Centralia College and have gone on to build strong careers and a legacy of service.
Clarence and Doris Watterson raised their four children on a dairy farm in the Salzer Valley in Centralia. The children worked on the dairy as kids and paid their way through college. The three boys ended up in construction. Ed Watterson (CC Class of 1955) has been a superintendent at Schwiesow Construction since 1979 and built much of the Centralia College campus. Bill Watterson (CC Class of 1961) was a basketball standout, who went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and start one of the largest construction companies in Alaska, Watterson Construction. Jim Watterson (CC Class of 1973) earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Washington and worked all over the west before joining Watterson Construction in 1989. He is now the company president. Marilyn Watterson Weinstein graduated from Centralia College in 1963 and earned a bachelor’s degree in business education from Washington State University. She became a pioneer in business education, teaching computers and eventually designing and implementing custom software systems.
As individuals, each of the Watterson children has exemplified the Trailblazer spirit through hard work, commitment to service and community, grit, and dedication to family. As a family, they really stand out.

16 • CENTRALIA COLLEGE CLASS OF 2021 The Centralia College Ceremonial Mace Ceremonial maces have been carried in college and university academic processions for centuries. The first dated record of such solemnities goes back to Vienna University in 1385. During a summer study tour of England in 1992, Dr. Henry Kirk, President, and Dr. John Pratt, English faculty, were impressed by the ceremonial mace collections. A committee was formed to explore the development of a ceremonial mace for Centralia College. Committee members included Philip Meany, Librarian; Neena Stoskopf, Director of Admissions and Records; Rich Henry, Director of Computer Services; Rob Nesland, student; and Dr. Henry Kirk, President. Bill Batie, former science instructor and dean, and Bob MacCannell, former community services instructor, both accomplished woodworkers, designed and constructed the mace and cabinet in late 1993. The mace was first used in the 1994 ceremonies. It is carried by the senior faculty member each year.
