Trial of 35 ornamental grasses and field trial in different forest environments with 4 ornamental grasses. ‘Edith Dudszus’, Miscanthus sinensis *, M. s. ‘Silberfeder’ og M. s. ‘Malepartus’, Molinia arundinaceae ‘Cordoba’, M. a. ‘Karl Foerster og M. a. ‘Transparent’, Carex muskingumensis og Calamagrostis brachytricha. Fjorten prydgrasslag hadde eit middels godt heilskapsinntrykk. Ti prydgrasslag hadde under akseptabelt heilskapsinntrykk. 3 ABSTRACT To increase knowledge about ornamental grasses in Norway, a trial of 35 different ornamental grasses was conducted with regards to frost hardiness and characteristics associated with ornamental value and use at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) at Ås. The objective of this thesis was therefore to continue the trial to a third growing season. Risk of invasion was also tested by examining if four ornamental grasses, that produced viable seeds in the trial, managed to establish themselves in four different treatments; in partial shade and shade, in existing undergrowth and in open ground. The four ornamental grasses were Carex muskingumensis, Luzula nivea, Miscanthus sinensis 'Kleine Fontäne' and Sesleria autumnalis. In the trial eleven ornamental grasses had a good total impression or better. The grasses with good grades were Molinia caerulea ‘Overdam’, M. c. ‘Variegata’ and M. c. ‘Edith Dudszus’, Miscanthus sinensis *, M. c. ‘Silberfeder’ and M. c. ‘Malepartus’, Molinia arundinaceae ‘Cordoba’, M. a. ‘Karl Foerster and M. c. ‘Transparent’, Carex muskingumensis and Calamagrostis brachytricha. Fourteen ornamental grasses had a medium well appearance. Ten ornamental grasses had a low total impression. These were Stipa gigantea, Hakonechloa macra, H. m. ’Aureola’ and H. m. ‘Albostriata’, Miscanthus x giganteus, Miscanthus sinensis ‘Undine’, Panicum virgatum ‘Squaw’ and P. v. ‘Heavy Metal’, Molinia arundinaceae ‘Windspiel’ and Sesleria nitida. Disease, lack of blooming, poor growth and death decreased the total impression. In the field trial, the four grasses established themselves well in all treatments. Generally, the grasses grew best in partial shade where the level of light was significantly higher than in shade. This suggests that light was the most important factor for the species to establish well. The exceptions were M. sinensis ‘Kleine Fontäne’ and S. autumnalis who grew about as well in shade as in partial shade. However, the increase in number of shoots was not so dependent on light. But L. nivea and M. sinensis ‘Kleine Fontäne’ had the greatest increase in shoots in partial shade. The grasses also grew best in squares with open ground, where the competition was smaller. However, the difference was not as large in S. autumnalis and L. nivea. C. muskingumensis was the only grass that had the greatest increase in height in open ground. S. autumnalis was the only grass that bloomed. It bloomed best in partial shade. One growing season is too little to say something certain about these species invasive potential. The experiment should be recorded in the following years to examine the species invasive potential further. 4 INNHALD 1 INNLEIING 6 2 MATERIAL OG METODE 8 2.1 UTPRØVINGSFORSØK 8 2.1.1 REGISTRERINGAR 10 2.2 ETABLERINGSFORSØK 12 2.2.1 KLARGJERING OG UTPLANTING AV GRASSLAGA 12 2.2.2 KLARGJERING AV FELTET 13 2.2.3 REGISTRERINGAR 15 2.3 ARBEID MED DATA 16 3 RESULTAT 17 3.1 UTPRØVINGSFORSØK 17 3.1.1 CALAMAGROSTIS - RØYRKVEINSLEKTA 17 3.1.2 MISCANTHUS – KINAGRASSLEKTA 23 3.1.3 MOLINIA – MOLINIA-/BLÅTOPPSLEKTA 31 3.1.4 HAKONECHLOA – HAKONEGRASSLEKTA 41 3.1.5 SESLERIA – SVENSKEGRASSLEKTA 45 3.1.6 ANDRE PRYDGRASSLAG 49 3.2 ETABLERINGSFORSØK 55 3.2.1 ARTSSAMANSETTING I FORSØKSFELTET FØR PLANTING 55 3.2.2 ØKOLOGISKE FAKTORAR 57 3.2.3 OVERLEVING HJÅ PRYDGRASSLAGA 58 3.2.4 VEKST HJÅ PRYDGRASSLAGA 59 3.2.5 BLØMING HJÅ PRYDGRASSLAGA 65 3.2.6 SJUKDOM HJÅ PRYDGRASSLAGA 66 3.2.7 KONKURRANSETILHØVA TIL PRYDGRASSLAGA 67 4 DISKUSJON 70 4.1 UTPRØVINGSFORSØK 70 4.2 ETABLERINGSFORSØK 77 5 LITTERATURLISTE 82 6 VEDLEGG 85 5 1 INNLEIING Prydgrasa reknast til familiane Poaceae (grasfamilien), Cyperaceae (starrfamilien) og Junaceae (sivfamilien) (Darke 2007; Widlundh et al. 2006).

While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image.

The paper presents results acquired by an ecological analysis of vegetation succession on the field of the Slovak Karst in south-east Slovakia over the past 25 years. The data were collected on per- manent research plots etsablished in 1983−1985 on the Plešivská Plateau (part of the Slovak Karst National Park and Biosphere Reserve). Changes in mesic and dry grassland vegetation of per- manent field plots were evaluated in the same way both times according to the Central European method. Due to cessation of non-forest vegetationmanagement the majority, permanent plots is- gradually overgrownby woody plants. Succession of vegetation runs faster on karst plateaux where the trees and shrubs invasion is accompanied by overgrowing of grassland vegetation with Bra- chypodium pinnatum and Calamagrostis epigejos, which are completly change their species com- position.

ANNALES HISTORICO-NATURALES MUSEI NATIONALIS HUNGARICI Volume 96 Budapest, 2004 pp. 51-62. Some differences in morphological structure of the vegetative parts (herbage) of Sesleria heufleriana Schur and Sesleria hungarica Újhelyi (Poaceae) D. KOVATS Department of Botany, Hungarian Natural History Museum H-1087 Budapest, Könyves Kálmán krt. 40. Hungary E-mail: [email protected] Abstract - Comparative morphological measurements were carried out on the culms and leaves of Sesleria heufleriana SCHUR and Sesleria hungarica ÚJHELYI. On the basis of observations and mea surements it can be stated that differences occur in numbers and length values of internodes. The length dimension (ratio) of leaf blades and leaf sheets changes on another level of the culms in Sesleria heufleriana as in Sesleria hungarica. The investigations were carried out on plants collected from original habitats and on those planted in an experimental garden. With 5 figures and 4 tables. Key words - Sesleria heufleriana, Sesleria hungarica. INTRODUCTION FERDINAND SCHUR (1799-1878) - who had a hard life as a pharmacist, chemist and botanist - during his botanical round trip in Transylvania between 5th luly and 15th August in 1853 discovered a lot of new taxa, among them a new spe cies of Sesleria, and described it as Sesleria heufleriana SCHUR (SCHUR 1853). Another outstanding botanist, taxonomist in Hungary several decades later was JÓZSEF ÚJHELYI (1910-1979), who had always been a paternal friend to this author. He was the best specialist of the European species of Koeleria, Sesleria, Achillea, and Lotus. ÚJHELYI described Sesleria hungarica ÚJHELYI as a new spe cies of Poaceae (ÚJHELYI 1959). These two Sesleria are closely related taxa.

  • Characterization of the Leaf Epidermis of Two Sesleria Species
COMĂNESCU PETRONELA, KUZMANOVIĆ NEVENA J. Plant Develop. 17(2010): 23-28 CHARACTERIZATION OF THE LEAF EPIDERMIS OF TWO SESLERIA SPECIES COMĂNESCU PETRONELA1, KUZMANOVIĆ NEVENA2 Abstract: Leaf epidermis has been used as character in taxonomy of Poaceae family since the 1930s. The purpose of present study was to determine leaf epidermal features helpful in distinguishing two species of Sesleria genus – Sesleria heufleriana Schur and Sesleria uliginosa Opiz. Both the abaxial and the adaxial epidermis have been examinated for each species. So both examined species have Festucoid type of epidermis, but differences of some epidermal features exist at the species level. This include variation in number and size of epidermal cells and distribution patterns of stomata. Keywords: Sesleria, epidermis, anatomy Introduction Sesleria heufleriana Shur and Sesleria uliginosa Opiz. form a very closely related group. They have some fundamental common characters, such as pruinous leaves, three floretted spikelets, dense spikes and the occurrence in lower altitudes. S. heufleriana is a limestone species, often tolerating a rare wood growth, while S. uliginosa is a species of calcareous swamps or clay soils which often withstands even the summer drying, growing sometimes also in the undergrowth of woods [DEYL, 1946]. The taxonomic value of the leaf epidermis in grass systematics has been demonstrated by many scientists [PRAT, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1961; TATEOKA et al., 1959; METCALFE, 1960; ELLIS, 1976, 1979]. Microscopic studies have found leaf surface characters of value in angiosperm taxonomy including size and shape of cells, cell wall undulations, morphology of stomata and stomatal patterning [STACE, 1984]. The aim of this study was to determine the patterns of variation in epidermal characteristics, assess their value in species identification and classification, and also to use the epidermal studies in establishing the taxonomic relationship between this two analysed species.

Introduction The conservation status of plants is one of the most widely used indicators for assessing the condition of ecosystems and their biodiversity. It also provides an important tool in establishing priorities for the conservation of species. At global scale, the best source of information on the conservation status of plants is the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species [1, 5]. The Red List is designed to determine the relative risk of extinction, with the main purpose of cataloguing and highlighting those taxa that are facing a higher risk of extinction. It provides taxonomic, conservation status, and distribution of information on taxa that have been evaluated using the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria: Version 3.1 [5]. The necessity of this study was to make an inventory of theLiliopsida species of the flora of the Republic of Moldova [8, 10], in order to provide key resources for decision- makers, policy-makers, resources managers, environmental planners and NGOs etc.
