Tutu In Missiologiese evaluering. Die doel van hierdie studie is eerstens om In agtergrond studie van Biskop Tutu te doen, sodat sy teologie in die regte konteks ontleed kan word. Tweederis word ten doel gestel 0111 sy teologie te sistematiseer en uiteen te sit. Derdens wor d In evaluering van Biskop Tutu se teologie gemaak. Vierdens word gekyk na die missiologiese relevansie van Biskop Tutu se teologie vir die evangeliese teoloog in Suid-A.frika. Sodoende hoort hierdie studie by te dra tot konstruktiewe ekumeniese kommunikasie binne die resent komplekse sosio-politiese Suid-Afrikaanse situasie. As ideaal word uiteindelik gestel In gesprekgeleentheid met Biskop Tutu, waarin met begrip en gemeenskaplike raakvlakke gekom kan word tot wedersydse teologiese bevrugting. So sal Christus se gebed ook in Suid-Afrika in die ekumeniese verhoudings werklikheid wor d : "Ek bid dat hulle almal een mag wees, net soos U, Vader, in My is en Ek in U, dat hulle ook in Ons mag wees, sodat die wêreld kan glo dat U My gestuur het" (JOH. 17:21). Sodat die wêreld kan glo! - 2 - AFDELING I AGTERGROND TOT DIE TEOLOGIE VAN BISKOP TUTU 1. Biografie Desmond Mpilo Boy Tutu IS op 7 Oktober 1931 te Klerksdorp gebore. Sy vader, Zacharia, was In Xhoza, en sy moeder, Ale t h a ~.lrttlhare, In Eotswana. Op sy dokumente word Biskop Tutu aange- gee as "indeterminable at present" (Journal of Theology for Southern Africa, V01. 49: 57). Wat sou die Biskop self wees? Hierdie problematiese uitvloeisel van die komplekse etniese beleid in Suid- Afr-ika sou hom nog baie frustreer. Die Biskop wil niks anders wees as In gewone ongeklassifiseerde burger van Suid- Afrika nie. Reeds in sy kinderdae het Biskop Tutu kennis gemaak met die onaangenaamhede van apartheid. Swart woongebiede, goed bekend in sy jong dae, was gesloop om plek te maak vir blanke woonge- biede. Sophia Town, wat nou Triomf is, is In sprekende voorbeeld hiervan. Hy moes sien hoe swart skoolkinders blankes se toe- broodjies uit asblikke haal, terwyl Dr. Verwoerd kosvoorsiening aan swart skole gestaak het, maar blanke skole steeds deur die regering van kos voorsien is. Blanke kinders het neerhalende opmerkings teenoor hom gemaak. Dit alles moes bydra tot die Biskop se aversie van apartheid. Hy ontvang sy skoolop leidin g in Roodepoort aan die "Western High School" (nou die "Madibane High" genoem). Dit was oorspronklik In Sweedse Sendingskool. Vir skoolgeld verkoop hy verversings op voorstedelike treine, en werk as joggie op die Killarney Golfbaan. Sy ideaal was om mediese dokter te word. Daarvoor was daar egter nie geld nie. As veer tienjar ige doen hy tering op Cl" word vir byna twee jaar lank in Sop hia Town behandel. Hier sou die priester T're vo r Huddleston hom baie beindruk.

On 10 October 1954, the London daily newspaper The Observer published an article by an 1 Anglican priest and monk working in Johannesburg, Fr Trevor Huddleston CR. Entitled ‘The Church Sleeps On’, it was a St. Peter’s damning indictment of the failure of white South African Christians to oppose or even to recognise the intrinsic evil of apartheid, and a passionate call to Christians to act. It sprang from Huddleston’s experience of the suffering, the frustration, the deprivation – physical, educational, social, political – of his black parishioners. Most immediately, it sprang from his anger and sorrow at the restrictions just imposed on his close friend, Oliver Tambo. “As I write,” he says, “I have just had the news that one of my African friends, a devout Christian, has been banned and his movements proscribed for two years. This kind of procedure has now been taken against virtually all African and Non-European leaders of any standing in South Africa, including a great many trade unionists. Yet, White South Africa remains silent, either approving wholeheartedly such totalitarian methods or tacitly accepting them as part of a pattern of life which has become familiar.” 1 Michael Stern, then the 32-year-old Deputy and so deeply.     147 GEORGE CAREY The Growth and Future of African Christianity: A Personal View Although Africa is regarded as the ailing continent, representing only 4% of the world’s GDP, it is a place of beauty and heroic faith. George Carey explores the contribution of Anglicanism in five countries he knows well, tracing the development of Anglicanism from the end of the colonial period and reflecting on the successes and failures of its mission. He shows that, without intending it to be so, the legacy of colonial Christianity, for all its well-meaning intentions in South Africa – and to a lesser degree in Sudan – placed a burden on the emerging African leadership. Nonetheless, the Anglican tradition in Africa is now strong, resilient and growing. It reminds European Christians of the great truths of apostolic faith that growth arises not from ease and costless believing, but from sacrificial following and living the way of the cross. It is difficult for Western Christians to grasp the expansion of world Christianity. Situated as we are in secular cultures that combine strong networks of folk religion with large swathes of indifference towards institutional Christianity, we find triumphant and assertive faith puzzling and challenging. However, wherever we look outside western Europe the picture is very different. There is growth that ranges from steady to startling and then spectacular increase of congregations.1 If we took South America as an example, in 1900 there were barely a million Christians on this continent. Today there are reckoned to be in the region of 460 million, and there is no sign that the growth is slowing down.

Some musicians within the church see this heritage as being under threat, and with the ever-growing support for gospel and traditional African music in a number of former "white" parishes, not to mention the ongoing interest in so-called charismatic or contemporary music, there seems to be a concern that the style of music, as practised for centuries in the liturgy of the Anglican Church, may well be in decay. Thus, the preservation of a heritage such as this, surrounded by so many differing and varied cultural influences perhaps requires a new focus and prominence within the local Anglican Church community.

The library consisted of books, pamphlets, periodicals and manuscripts. This Guide only contains the descriptions of the manuscript material (covering the period between 1835 to the present). The other categories are listed separately. The Anglican manuscripts were initially described in Section 2 of the University Library's Guide to the Archives and Papers which ran through three editions between 1967-1975 and a Cumulative Supplement 1975-1979. With the growth of the church’s collection of manuscripts, it became more manageable to publish a separate guide to it. This edition of the Guide to the Archives of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa lists all Anglican Church collections described in previous guides, together with all accessions between 2000 and 2009. Arrangement of the entries is by accession order to facilitate future updatings of the Guide. The missing numbers in the numerical sequence relate to general (not Anglican Church) collections which are described in the Guide to the Archives and Papers, 12th edition, 2010.

    A History of the Church of St James the Great Haydock Eric Lowe Preface by Fr Paul Nener and Fr Rodney Middleton The last history of the Parish of St James the Great, Haydock, was written to celebrate the centenary of the founding of the Parish. We have just completed 129 years, and Eric Lowe has kindly offered to up date the history. It gives us pleasure to preface the work with these few remarks. The history seems as if it is the story of successive Vicars! This is inevitable since each Parish Priest leaves his own mark and style on any Parish. Sensible parishioners retain what is beneficial, and forget those things which fail to meet their needs, or become outdated. Despite this, what we have here is actually a history of a Parish and its people, in particular the faithful worshippers over 129 years. It is the story of an Anglican parish firmly rooted in the Catholic tradition of the Church of England - a tradition that goes back to quite early days in the 'Oxford Movement'. It was in this movement and its aftermath that St James' was a pioneer in the North of England. The Church itself bears witness to this tradition, not only because of the external signs, important as they are, but also, more significantly, because of the immediate sense of prayer, devotion and holiness that inspires even the most casual visitor to our Parish church. There are few sacred building which so wonderfully enfold one with a sense of the presence of God. This cannot be told in history, nor can it adequately be described in words.

The chapters correspond with four distinct periods in Baddeley’s life: the First World War 1914-19 (Chapter 1), Melanesia, 1932-47 (Chapter 2), the suffragan bishopric of Whitby, 1947-54 (Chapter 3), and the diocesan bishopric of Blackburn 1954-60 (Chapters 4 and 5).

It is not surprising that it is happening; the brassiness is what astonishes. Reagan, at his request, had a 'friendly' meeting with the representative of what he described in Barch as a 'friend­ ly nation', Le., the white minority currently in control. The p"t'esident has stressed South Africa's 'production of minerals we all must have' arrl called that country 'strategically essential to the free VK}rld I. All this of course is accorr.panied by custornary incantations against apartheid and pledges to help those ~rking to remove that evil. Appeals to Presi­ dent Reagan to condemn Pretoria's revocation of the passport of Bishop Desmond 'futu - no one inside South Africa has striven harder and more peacefully for the arolition of apartheid and for reconciliation - have produced not a peep from the Hhite House. Botha came to Washington in the afterglow of the US government's 30 April veto (in which it was joined by its British and French allies) of mandatory sanctions resolutions in the UN Security Council aimed at Pretoria for its occupation of the InternatioMl Territory of Nam­ ibia and. its refusal to coop€I"'ate with the vlOrld tody in achieving independence for the Ter­ ritory.
