Air University Catalog Air University Catalog Academic Year 2009–2010 October 2009 00-frontmatter.indd 1 10/19/09 10:16:41 AM The Air University Catalog is the official Air University publication for disseminating infor- mation on Air University educational programs, including professional military education. This catalog is supplemented by the following publications: Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) Catalog; Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) General Catalog; and Air Force Institute for Advanced Distributed Learning (AFIADL) Catalog. The Air University Catalog serves as both a source document and a planning document for Air University schools and staff personnel. Board mem- bers inform the AU commander about the educational needs of their respective commands and their degree of satisfaction with AU’s products and programs. The board is advisory in nature and generally meets periodically at Maxwell Air Force Base or the Department of Defense at the Pentagon. The membership is comprised of all the vice-commanders of the major commands, as well as the Air National Guard dep- uty director. They are advised by the Air Force deputy chief of staff, personnel, and the United States Air Force Academy vice-commander. The board meets with and advises the secretary of the Air Force on matters of policy regarding the mission of Air University. The board meets at least twice a year—in the spring and the fall at Maxwell AFB, Alabama. The board presents a written report with its views and recommendations to the Air University commander. This report is then presented to the chief of staff, United States Air Force, and to the secretary of the Air Force. The membership is selected from the fields of education, business, industry, the professions, and public service. Mem- bers normally serve annual renewable terms up to a maximum of nine years. Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT), which had been the monopoly domestic telecommunications service provider, now faces competition from new carriers and from its traditional equipment suppliers (NEC, Fujitsu, Hitachi and Oki). With the explosive growth of the Japanese economy, NTT faces excellent market opportunities, but it also faces dilemmas. The newly privatized NTT must position itself to meet both the short- term and long-term earnings expectations of the financial community and foster competition at the same time. If the government does not believe the market has achieved the desired level of competitiveness, it may re-write the Telecommunications Business Law in 1990.

By the count that guides the present study, 773 games were made for religious audiences through 2010, of which 474 identify their affiliation as only “Christian,” or “biblical.” Like other artifacts of digital religion, these games allow us to see the entanglement of people’s theological and technological universes. However, unlike many other aspects of digital religion, religious video gaming’s novel artistic forms, cultural critiques, and theological possibilities largely blossomed beneath notice. Evangelical video game culture, thus, presents the creative production of a historically significant avant garde whose critical perspective has been neglected outside its own community. In particular, Evangelical video gaming transforms the concerns that connect it to other digital cultures – “violence,” for instance, or “immersion” – by attending to the moral status of the player-in-play. This study combines the methods of Religious Studies, Science and Technology Studies, and Cultural Studies to show how the popular artifacts of digital religion can shed light upon their cultural context.
