MAN CAVE by RANDOLPH SCHMIDT A thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Camden Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts Graduate Program in Creative Writing Written under the direction of Paul Lisicky And approved by ___________________________________ Paul Lisicky ___________________________________ Lauren Grodstein Camden, New Jersey May 2013 i ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Man Cave By RANDOLPH SCHMIDT Thesis Director: Paul Lisicky Man Cave is a novel about the façades that men construct in order to escape their lives. Pete, a suburban professional with a family, is desperately trying to construct a “man cave,” a getaway in his basement where he can cool off from the pressures of modern life. Andy, a disturbed, alcoholic carpenter, is obsessed with knives and has built an underground home in the forest behind Pete’s house. When they meet, each man’s strengths covers the other’s deficiencies, but only for so long. Eventually, even the most carefully built façade crumbles. ii 1 1. The night was full, and Andy let it surround him. He sat on the ground, his back resting on a large boulder about six hundred feet from the edge of the woods. So close to the end, but the trees were thick here. Behind him, the woods stretched for a mile before the next subdivision sprouted out of nowhere. In front of him, however, the lights of the Meadow Village homes twinkled through the leaves. A car engine rumbled somewhere in the distance. There were places left in the world, he knew, where he wouldn’t see any roofs, wouldn’t hear any cars.

VERSE of the WEEK PRAYER of the WEEK Lord of the Feast, You Have Prepared a Table Before All Peoples and Poured out Your Life with Abundance

1 Quieting the Shout of Should by Crystal Stine “As God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentle- ness, and patience.” -Colossians 3:12 I took a walk around the soccer field the other night. I was trying to escape the swarm of hardy bugs that were enjoying the hot summer night and hoped to clear my mind while burning a few calories. The more I walked, the more my mind raced – from to-do lists to upcoming events to random bursts of conversation with God about frustrating situations to what to have for dinner. I was so lost in the noise of all the thoughts that I nearly had a heart attack when a bunny jumped out of the woods near the path. I knew most of what I wished god could fix for me here things I’d said “yes” to without consulting Him. I was overwhelmed and feeling frazzled. Instead of intentionally putting on “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience” (Colossians 3:12), I had chosen to start my days with a thick covering of crabbiness, fear, doubt, comparison, and pride. Choosing to listen to all the things I “should” do had taken me out of a place of peace. Instead of enjoying a lovely walk at the park, I was fearing death by small, furry wildlife. Where the world says we should hold grudges, be the best, say “yes” to all things, and fight for what we deserve, a little time in God’s Word will show us a different path.

Que algun dia puguin viure més lliurement! v Abstract This thesis examines the fiction of contemporary American author George Saunders in terms of how it presents situations applicable to the chief notions of posthumanist ethics and how these conceptions of ethics concern nonhuman animals, which are prevalent in his writing.

    Relational Psychotherapy, Psychoanalysis and Counselling

Downloaded by [New York University] at 01:48 15 August 2016 RELATIONAL PSYCHOTHERAPY, PSYCHOANALYSIS AND COUNSELLING Is therapy’s relational turn only something to celebrate? It is a major worldwide trend taking place in all the therapy traditions. But up to now, appreciation of these developments has not been twinned with well-informed and constructive critique. Hence practitioners and students have not been able to engage as fully as they might with the complex questions and issues that relational working presents. Relational Psychotherapy, Psychoanalysis and Counselling: Appraisals and reappraisals seeks to redress this balance. In this unique book, Del Loewenthal and Andrew Samuels bring together the contributions of writers from several countries and many therapy modalities, all of whom have engaged with what ‘relational’ means – whether to espouse the idea, to urge caution or to engage in sceptical refl ection. Relational Psychotherapy, Psychoanalysis and Counselling: Appraisals and reappraisals presents clinical work of the highest standard in a way that is moving and draws the reader in. The more intellectual contributions are accessible and respectful, avoiding the polarising tendencies of the profession. At a time when there has been a decline in the provision and standing of the depth therapies across the globe, this book shows that, whatever the criticisms, there is still creative energy in the fi eld. It is hoped that practitioners and students in psychoanalysis, psychotherapy counselling and counselling psychology will welcome this book for its cutting-edge content and compassionate tone. Del Loewenthal is Professor of Psychotherapy and Counselling, and Director of the Research Centre for Therapeutic Education at the University of Roehampton, Downloaded by [New York University] at 01:48 15 August 2016 where he also convenes Doctoral programmes.

Hutto God for Us Typesetting File.Indd 1 1/14/19 9:12 AM Way Back Into the Arms of a God Who Has Always Loved Us Deeply and Without End

God has gifted Abby Hutto with a powerful ability to write and teach in a way that makes his Word personal and boldly alive. While each chapter of this book has a different focus, you will be drawn into all the chapters because Abby is able to describe the many realities of our hearts. I realized that I needed not just one chapter, but each chapter. So take your time reading this book. Ponder how each different chapter might be applied to your heart. Then you will hear what Abby invites us to hear: the detailed and trustworthy way in which God calls each of us to himself—not once, but again and again. —Ruth Ann Batstone, Counselor and Mentor; Author, Mov- ing On: Beyond Forgive and Forget; Speaker And Discipler, Serge; Senior Staff Consultant, Parakaleo God For Us is a unique book that will comfort, challenge, and compel you. As I read it, Hutto’s insights from the gospel of John soaked deep down into my heart. There was comfort for the pain and insecurities I have experienced in my own journey of faith. I was challenged to once again remember that every single person I meet has a back story, which impacts who they are today. As the gospel also compels us to do, I am excited to keep growing in giv- ing out rich truth woven with the merciful tenderness of Christ to people all around me and to the women who come to me for help. I commend this book to all who need help understanding our God’s loving heart.

It was unlicensed by any government for most of its life and it was labelled a pirate radio station. Although one of a number of unlicensed radio stations based on ships anchored off Britain, Radio Caroline was the first such station to broadcast all day using the English language. This, together with the station’s tenacity in surviving for some 40 years, has established Radio Caroline as a household name for offshore radio. A legal, onshore version of Radio Caroline continues to broadcast via several methods, predominantly via satellite and over the internet. Will L. Thompson 1847 – 1909

Will L. Thompson 1847 – 1909 He was born just four miles south for Calcutta, he grew up five miles west of Glasgow, studied music in Leipzig, Germany, operated a publishing business fifteen miles west of Rochester, there is a section in a small down in Ohio that carries his name, he became ill in Europe, he died in New York City, and he is buried in East Liverpool. While music dealers were not offing to pay him what he thought his first songs were worth, he ended up self-publishing two songs, “My Home on the Old Ohio” and “Gathering Shells from the Seashore” and making enough money from them to open his own music store. “Gathering Shells” soon became one of America’s most popular songs, just behind Stephen Foster’s “Old Folks at Home.” He did so well that he was soon a millionaire. It wasn’t long before he started his own publishing business in his hometown and later in Chicago. He felt that he owed something to the Lord for his good fortune, so he turned his talents to writing only sacred songs. His gospel songs soon circled the globe and were being translated into other languages. While people in the big cities could hear gospel singers and attend the great revivals where his songs were finding placement, he decided that the rural people should hear his songs also. He loaded an upright piano on a two-horse wagon and drove into the county to play and sing his own songs. In recent years, he was inducted into the Lou Holtz/Upper Ohio Valley Hall of Fame.
