Gordon and Gillian have moved away from Wirksworth to be closer to their family, and so we bid them a fond farewell with thanks for Gordon’s involvement with our magazine, and Gillian’s leadership of St Mary’s Mothers’ Union branch. Gordon’s meticulous attention to detail and a fresh approach to the layout of Team Spirit has ensured that it remains popular with our readership even though it has had to go ‘online’ for these last few issues. With Pam and Jill, our editorial team, Gordon has ensured a wide variety of articles which both entertain and challenge. We wish both Gordon and Gillian well in their new home and hope that they soon settle in. This, we hope, will be the last online only issue of Team Spirit as we anticipate a printed version for the December issue. We are in the process of looking for a permanent editor and more people to join the editorial team - ideally from the parishes - who will help us to move forward. In the meantime, I am grateful to Caroline, one of our Team Administrators, for taking on the task of preparing this issue for you to enjoy. If you would like to explore the possibility of taking on the job as editor or to join Jill and Pam in gathering items and articles, then do let us know. It’s a rewarding and interesting task which helps to facilitate our life together as a team of churches, and as such is a ministry of its own. With my thanks for your continuing support of Team Spirit. Canon David Truby, Team Rector A Note to Team Spirit My daughter Jane, who lives and worships in Leek, sent me a link to the national online weekly service which was from the Wirksworth Team this week. Despite my often inadequate technical skills I managed to find it. I am so glad I did. I really enjoyed it; it had just the right amount of everything. There were quite a number of familiar faces, lovely music and singing, a good clear message, some super views of our beautiful countryside and a peep into one or two churches I have never been in and must now visit. Also a special bonus - Signing. Having a small knowledge of BSL I found the beautiful signing very emotional and was able to pick up one or two new signs. When it was over I felt I needed to know where St Martin’s voices came from. So I looked for my copy of ‘Team Spirit’ to discover the names of all of our churches but I couldn’t find it. I spent some time looking in piles and under cushions, but with no luck, maybe I hadn’t paid my subs or perhaps thrown it away by mistake? I would ring someone up later. I looked for St Martin’s Singers online with no success (no wonder, I had got the name wrong.) Slightly frustrated I got on with my day. Then this morning at 6.30am, it came to me in a flash! I never actually had a copy of ‘Team Spirit’ - I would find it online! And sure enough I did. I got myself a drink and spent half an hour more, in bed reading it; quite a good way to start the day. So it’s ‘Thank you Wirksworth Team - a lovely service’, and I also think my confidence in sorting things out online has improved slightly. I have discovered the names of all the churches in the Team, and when I put the right name in the computer I will no doubt discover where and who St Martin’s Voices are! Liz Ormond Pastoral Letter ‘Improvise, adapt and overcome’ This is a phrase which I picked up when working as a padre with the Army Cadet Force. I was ‘volunteered’ for the role by my boss when working at Derby Cathedral, and subsequently spent sixteen happy years visiting the various detachments around the county and, more importantly, providing pastoral support to both youngsters and supervising adults on the annual camp each August. I had done a little work with our local air cadets when I was the Rector of Brimington in Chesterfield. There I just turned up in civvies. With the army it was a different matter, and I found myself being commissioned with the rank of Captain, put in uniform and taught how to march in step - something I never quite mastered - and to salute those who offered me that courtesy in the course of a day. Being a padre gave me an insight into the military mind as well as providing a unique opportunity to share Jesus with the hundreds of young people that I would meet with, both at their local detachment and on camp. I made some good friends, one of whom gave me that little phrase used at the start of this article. It is a phrase which has stood me in good stead during this last year and a half as we have had to think through our response to the many and frequent changes that Covid 19 has thrown at us. What I like about the phrase is the positive attitude that it conveys. It suggests determination in the face of adversity, and a flexibility that isn’t anchored to the old ways of doing things, while at the same time carrying all that is best about our tradition into the future. Its goal is to overcome the challenges that we face, learning from experience, and applying the lessons learnt to the next hurdle. For the moment it seems that we are free from the restrictions that have dominated life. The vaccination programme has been a success, though at the time of writing the numbers of infections is increasing, and though lockdown has been lifted, the threat of further restrictions is ever present. A good example of how we improvised, adapted and overcame was the use of zoom to facilitate our worship. I can take no credit for it! My colleague, Carla, suggested we should start a zoom service early in the first lockdown.

  • Which School for My Child?
Which school for my child? Introduction At different times in every child’s school life you, as parents, are asked to decide which school you would like your son or daughter to go to. For example: • when your child is first assessed for an Education Health & Care Plan (EHCP), • when their current EHCP is being amended, for example because they have reached the age where they need to change schools You need to be closely involved in helping to decide what educational provision your child will need. This information booklet is intended to help you in expressing your preference for a particular school for your child. It is for parents of children who already have a Plan and are about to change school because of their age. This is known as a phase transfer. However, most of the information will be useful in considering schools at other times. Where can my child go to school if he or she has special educational needs? Most children with EHCPs will be able to go to their local mainstream school. They will be taught with children of their own age with extra help from their class teacher. They may also be helped by a Teaching Assistant or a specialist teacher. Other special help that they need can also be provided. Some children may need a more specialised education and there is a range of alternative provision, which may be suitable, including special schools. So, you need to think about what type of school may best meet your child’s needs: • Mainstream school - with extra help or provision • Enhanced Resource School (ERS) – this is a mainstream school with additional resources for particular children with special educational needs.
