This is a huge relief to many families in the Ninth District, which had an estimated 22,189 children covered by the program in 2016. Also reauthorized this year: federally-funded Community Health Centers. For people lacking health insurance, especially those residing in rural areas, these centers are vital for care. Community Health Centers have a strong presence in the Ninth District. According to 2017 data provided by the National Association of Community Health Centers, 31 sites in our communities served more than 76,000 patients. You can find one near you by visiting findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov/. Reauthorizing Community Health Centers was included with CHIP, so it passed on the same 242-174 vote in the House with Republican majority support as noted above. Ultimately, we were able to send it to President Trump's desk. Extending CHIP and Community Health Centers made sure these important programs continue to serve. But programs that do not presently require reauthoriza- tion deserve our attention as well. Oversight by my committee is important to understanding many prob- lems in health care, and we have been conducting rig- orous oversight to see that federal laws and programs are working as intended or to understand matters that may require action. A recent Health Subcommittee hearing on mental health provisions of the 21st Century Cures Act fell into the former category. When working on Cures, I advocated for more funding and better coordination for mental health services. Nathan and Clay manned the gates during the entire day, and remember, nobody is getting paid one red cent. They could have been boating on the lake, but two former Cougars were standing in the hot sun helping do something to support Pulaski County foot- ball. Thanks fellows, thank you very much. Then comes some old side- kicks of mine, friends, and sup- porters of Cougar football for over 30 years, Allen Roseberry, Erby Turpin, and Ward Angle. Unless you've tried to keep three football teams, something like 200 players, stocked with ice, water, pizza, Gatorade, take care of their locker room, and any- thing else they might need which is unpredictable, you just don't know what a day that is, but these three are old vets, and I rely on them very much. They did their usual excellent job, and laughed all the way, they loved it, but they were tired at end of the day, but still happy because the effort worked. Everything came together. Allen Roseberry will probably be mad at me for saying this because he insists on not receiv- ing any credit, but those 100 large pizzas that were provided for the teams Saturday, Allen and his company New River Valley Restaurant Services picked up the entire tab. Unless you have men like Allen Roseberry, and local businesses to help, you can't pull off successful events. And a thank you to Pepsi for the Gatorade, and another old Cougar, Richie Hasson. I have always received too much credit. Without the people I've mentioned above, I couldn't get a thing done. It takes good people. Saturday was a good day for the Pulaski County football program. Our next goal will be to make this same event better next year, and an even more success- ful day for the Cougar program. But to all the people I've men- tioned above. I sincerely thank you. Each of you made last Saturday a really good day. We're about ready to find out. Here we go again. It's time for Cougar football. Remember when the entire state paid attention to the Pulaski County score every Friday night? Well, it's been 10 years since the Cougars have won a really big game. However, it's time to stop talking about the past. The 80s and 90s are gone. They aren't coming back. It's a terrific history, but it's history. What about the future? It's time to stop chasing his- tory and chase the future. It's about Pulaski County football being respected again. History does tell us it will happen again. The program Locker rose from far greater depths in 1979 than it faces today. Room Will it happen in 2018? Cougar football is about play- ing in big games, and win- Dan ning big games. In short, it's Callahan time. I've been asked this ques- tion too often. I've hoped for a long time that something would happen that would make it unnecessary. Will Pulaski County ever win again in football? First of all, Pulaski County has not been a loser in football. In fact, it remains today the only actual winning program at Pulaski County High School. Nobody asks about the other sports. The reason is simple. The Cougars have won big time in football, and not just a time or two, but the program was among the best in the state for almost 30 years. There have been spurts here and there in other sports, but nothing came close to matching Cougar foot- ball from 1979 until 2008. I was in a local diner the other day and two younger folks asked if we had ever won anything in football? Today's students at PCHS know nothing about the glory days at Pulaski County. Virginia Tech is spending much of fall practice working to fill some huge holes on defense. That side of the ball has always been a strength for the Hokies under defen- sive coordinator Bud Foster, who faces a major overhaul. Three players left early for the NFL, three graduated and two more were dismissed during the offseason. "Was I happy with a couple things that happened?" Foster said, referring to the dismissals of Adonis Alexander for academics and Mook Reynolds for an undisclosed violation of athletic depart- ment policy. "No. But those are things that are out of our control. And really what we can focus on are the guys we have in our program and they want to be successful." It's a quarterback competition, Alabama- style. Totally win-win. The Crimson Tide has two good options to choose from, and the decision will be based on what everything is at Alabama: Victories that make the Tide national and Southeastern Conference title contenders. "A guy that wins," is how offensive coor- dinator Mike Locksley boils down what the Tide's looking for. Both players seem capable of doing that, even if they have different styles and strengths. Greg McElroy, SEC Network analyst and former Alabama quarterback, figures it might come down to whether Tide coach Nick Saban wants to bank on the defense and go with the quarterback who makes the fewest mistakes or turn to the one with more of a gunslinging style. While Tagovailoa is the presumed front- runner, McElroy believes it remains "very much up in the air" who will start the open- er against Louisville in Orlando. "Now, if I were to handicap it myself, I would say Tua would probably have the inside track just given how he played against one of the best defenses in college football last year," said McElroy, who led Alabama to the 2009 national champi- onship. "But I also know that Jalen did a great job in providing the team exactly what it was they needed in the (13) games leading up to that championship game. "I don't think it's as clear-cut as everyone else seems to think it is but I still think that Tua would have the inside track." Tagovailoa passed for three touchdowns after halftime of the title game against Georgia's stingy defense, including the 41- yard winner to fellow freshman DeVonta Smith in overtime.
