A Quick Guide A quick guide “ Everyone should have a will. That’s how you provide for family and friends. But you can do a lot by leaving a legacy to a “Love the arts, Leave to the arts” charity. Why not use your will to help the vibrant cultural life that makes Scotland such a fine place to live. A legacy to the arts is a small gesture that makes a very big difference.” Alexander McCall Smith, Author and Art Lover In February 2013 your law firm is taking part in a new initiative which aims to encourage art lovers to leave a legacy to cultural charities. Members of the public will be able to search the “Love the arts, Leave to the arts” website www.aandbscotland.org.uk/legacies to find contact details of participating law firms. This guide will help you welcome new clients to your firm and help support Scotland’s vibrant cultural life. When will we receive our first enquiries? The campaign will run throughout February 2013. From late November onwards prospective Will makers will be able to find your details on the “Love the arts, Leave to the arts” website. Be prepared to deal with enquiries from late November onwards. What types of Wills does “Love the arts, Leave to the arts” cover? The scheme covers Basic Wills, Mirror Wills or Codicils. A Basic Will is considered to be one in which the estate is left to a small number of beneficiaries and does not require complex inheritance tax advice. If the Will is complicated you are free to charge your usual rate for additional work. You must advise clients of the extra work and costs involved before accepting instructions. How many appointments can be made? You can set a maximum number of free appointments to ensure you do not feel over committed. Please let us know when you have reached your capacity and we will remove your contact details from the website. How do I know who is eligible to make an appointment through “Love the arts, Leave to the arts”? To make an appointment covered by the scheme the client must leave a legacy to a “Love the arts, Leave to the arts” arts charity. A full list can be found below or at www.aandbscotland.org.uk/legacies Prospective clients will be encouraged to use the Guide to Making a Will available on our website to help them prepare for their appointment. Although you are giving your time for free please ensure that clients receive the same level of service you offer fee-paying clients. Publicising the scheme The arts organisations involved will promote the campaign to their supporters and Arts & Business Scotland will run a publicity campaign at a national level to promote the scheme. If you have any questions about the scheme please contact [email protected] or call 0131 556 3353. (T R Annan and Sons Ltd., Glasgow) GLASGOW UNIVERSITY library Abstract This study investigates the cultural scene in Scotland in the period from the 1880s to 1939. The project focuses on the effects in Scotland of the development of the new media of film and wireless. It addresses question as to what changes, over the first decades of the twentieth century, these two revolutionary forms of public technology effect on the established entertainment system in Scotland and on the Scottish experience of culture. The study presents a broad view of the cultural scene in Scotland over the period: discusses contemporary politics; considers established and new theatrical activity; examines the development of a film culture; and investigates the expansion of broadcast wireless and its influence on indigenous theatre.
