“THE NEWEST AMERICANS” 4/3 – 7/8/18 “The Newest Americans” offers a unique look at U.S. citizenship and the immigration process in the era of the Trump administration. The exhibit features portraits by Sam Comen and interviews by Michael Estrin capturing the experiences of 28 immigrants from 23 countries of origin, prompting discussion on America’s legacy as a nation of immigrants and the future of the American dream. AND STILL WE RISE IN 2018 5/5/18 On Sat., May 5, 2018, hosts a special celebration of “And Still We Rise: Race, Culture and Visual Conversations,” a traveling exhibit exploring 400 years of Black history and social justice on 67 story quilts hand-crafted by the Women of Color Quilters Network. Festivities include free admission for all Bank of America cardholders or $5 reduced admission to all current exhibits; welcome remarks by Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg’s Office representative; presentations by exhibit textile artists; $5 verbal American Quilt Society-certified appraisals; community quilt project led by Sisters Quilting Collective; pop-up fiber arts shop; Greater Sacramento African American Genealogy Society booth and more fun for all ages. HOMESCHOOL DAY 5/7/18 Homeschool Day offers small groups the opportunity to experience the Museum’s K-12 educational programs while taking advantage of discounted admission normally only available for groups of 30 or more students. On Mon., May 7, 2018, groups of 2 or more are invited to book a self-guided tour for $3.50 per person and explore the Museum’s learning programs aligned with California State Content Standards and Common Core. Attendees may also participate in 30-minute docent-led tours of “Uprooted! Japanese Americans during WWII” at 10:00 am, 11:00 am and 12:00 pm, along with a free, hands-on origami activity. TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK 5/7 – 5/11/18 As a token of appreciation for educating the state’s future leaders, the California Museum will celebrate California teachers by providing $20 gift certificates during Teacher Appreciation Week May 7 - 11, 2018. All currently- employed teachers at a California K-12 public or private school are eligible to claim a certificate valid on general admission or a field trip tour April 30 - June 30, 2018. “AND STILL WE RISE: RACE, CULTURE AND VISUAL CONVERSATIONS” THROUGH 5/27/18 “And Still We Rise: Race, Culture and Visual Conversations” is a national traveling exhibit exploring 400 years of U.S. history on 67 story quilts by artists from the Women of Color Quilters Network. A chronicle of the African American experience from the 17th through 21st centuries, each hand-crafted work depicts a transformational moment in our nation’s history and the ongoing evolution of social justice. Exploring topics including civil rights, race relations, immigration and gender equality, "And Still We Rise" inspires reflection and action on many issues challenging America in 2018. BLUE STAR MUSEUMS 2018 5/29 - 9/2/18 A partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families, Blue Star Museums provides free admission to all active duty, National Guard and Reserve military personnel and up to 5 members of their family at the California Museum from May 29 through Sept. 2, 2018 when a current military ID is presented at time of admission. CALIFORNIA TIME TRAVELER CAMP SESSION 1 6/25 – 6/29/18 Explore 10,000 years of history and culture in the California Time Traveler Camp! Ideal for kids ages 6-11, the weeklong camp offers young adventurers engaging learning experiences as they travel back in time to the state’s significant eras. A combination of exhibit tours, excursions to nearby sites and hands-on activities, daily itineraries begin on Monday in modern California and end on Friday in the state’s prehistoric past over 10,000 years ago. Admission: $195.00 for 1 camper plus free kids’ Cub Club Museum membership with registration by Mar. 31, 2018 or $225.00 per child beginning April 1, 2018. ONGOING TEMPORARY EXHIBITS:

11th ANNUAL CALIFORNIA HALL OF FAME ARTIFACT EXHIBIT THROUGH 10/31/18 Featuring artifacts and ephemera on loan from inductees’ personal collections, this temporary exhibition explores the lives and legacies of inductees in 11th class of the California Hall of Fame, inspiring visitors to make their own mark on history. “PASSION & PERSEVERANCE: A YEAR AT ENCINA” THROUGH 9/2/18 “Passion & Perseverance: A Year at Encina” is an all-new exhibit highlighting stories of dedicated teachers in a low- income school and their students, whose resilience and ability cannot be measured by test scores. Based on the yearlong series produced by Capital Public Radio, the exhibit explores what the school’s history reveals about California itself, tackling issues of equity, immigration and stigma, as well as the meaning of community and family. ONGOING SIGNATURE EXHIBITS:

“CALIFORNIA’S REMARKABLE WOMEN” Honoring the significant achievements of women who have called the Golden State home, “California’s Remarkable Women” explores the extraordinary accomplishments of over 200 women over the last 165 years, from farm worker organizer and astronaut to designer Ray Eames and architect Julia Morgan. Inspired by former First Lady , the exhibit was developed in partnership with California State Parks. For more information, visit http://www.californiamuseum.org/californias-remarkable-women.

“CALIFORNIA INDIANS: THE FIRST PEOPLE” Initially developed under the direction of a Native Advisory Council in 2011, “California Indians: The First People” is the only exhibit of its kind in the state to present the unique contributions of California's Native Peoples in their own voice. Through artifacts, original art, oral histories and an interactive language kiosk, the exhibit chronicles the histories and cultural legacies of over 100 tribes. Highlights include the Chipped Stone Bear, California's official prehistoric artifact; baskets woven by Native artists; a fur cape owned by Ishi; and more. “CALIFORNIA MISSIONS: A JOURNEY ALONG THE EL CAMINO REAL” Designed to correspond with State standards for 4th grade students, this exhibit includes rare artifacts from Missions across the state, such as iron tools handmade at Mission Santa Barbara, a marriage registry document written by Father Junípero Serra, an 1893 painting of Mission San Luis Rey on an original tile from that mission, and more. In addition, oral history brings this pivotal chapter of history into the present through the modern perspective of Andrew A. Learn how and why your zip code determines how long and how well you live in the multimedia exhibit "Health Happens Here." Discover what Californians are doing to build health in communities across the state in this interactive journey through all the places and all the ways health happens in California. Through a series of high- tech games and interactive stations, visitors explore key factors that affect health beyond traditional diet and exercise while earning points that can be donated to 1 of 10 charities to make health happen for all Californians. Winner of the American Alliance of Museum’s “Excellence In Exhibition” award, the exhibit’s games are also available on a micro web site at http://www.healthhappensinca.org.

“UNITY CENTER AT CALIFORNIA MUSEUM” Initiated in 1999 in response to a series of Northern California hate crimes, the Unity Center at the California Museum is an all-new installation celebrating the state’s diverse people, customs and cultures. Featuring multimedia exhibits exploring significant chapters of California’s civil rights history and a state-of-the-art classroom, the interactive 4,000 sq. ft. gallery encourages visitors to find common ground while embracing their own individuality. Through advocacy tools and engaging educational programs, visitors are empowered to be Unity Activists, exercising their rights and standing up for the rights of others – regardless of belief, background, identity or gender. “UPROOTED! JAPANESE AMERICANS DURING WORLD WAR II” Featuring members of the local Sacramento Japanese American community, this exhibit presents personal stories highlighting stories of immigration and mass incarceration during World War II as well as the successful fight for redress for the loss of constitutional rights. Featuring replica barracks and guard tower, the display includes rare artifacts on loan from members of Sacramento’s Japanese American community, along with a video introduction by George Takei, an interactive map of the incarceration sites and oral history video kiosks featuring the personal experiences of formerly-incarcerated Japanese Americans from Northern California.
