UPDATED: October 10, 2017 OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2017 EXHIBITS & EVENTS OCTOBER HOMESCHOOL DAY: LIGHT & NOIR 10/2/17 Homeschool Day offers small groups the opportunity to experience the Museum’s K-12 educational programs while taking advantage of discounted admission normally only available for groups of 30 or more students. On Mon., Oct. 2, 2017, groups of 2 or more are invited to book a self-guided tour at 10:00 am, 11:00 am or 12:00 pm for $3.50 per person and explore the Museum’s learning programs aligned with California State Content Standards and Common Core. Attendees are also invited to participate in a free, hands-on craft activity in conjunction with the exhibit “Light & Noir: Exiles & Emigres in Hollywood, 1933-1950” open through Oct. 15, 2017. For more information, visit http://museums.bankofamerica.com. “PATIENT NO MORE: PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES SECURING CIVIL RIGHTS” THROUGH 10/9/17 “Patient No More: People with Disabilities Securing Civil Rights” chronicles the lives and legacies of the courageous Californians whose activism launched the American disability rights movement. Developed by San Francisco State University’s Paul K. Longmore Institute on Disability and currently on a nationwide tour by Exhibit Envoy, the exhibit explores the significant events in California history that led to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. Its presentation coincides with the 40th anniversary of the Section 504 Occupation, a 26- day sit-in demonstration by 150 disability rights activists at San Francisco’s Federal Building in 1977. Highlights include the opening of Arte y Almas: Día de Los Muertos 2017, appearances by exhibit artists; performance and ceremonial blessing by Maquilli Tonatiuh Aztec Dancers; live music by Dinorah; food and drinks for sale by Mayahuel; sugar skull workshops ($20.00 fee); costume contest with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes; free face painting; hands-on activities for kids and more. For more information or to buy tickets, visit http://www.californiamuseum.org/dotd-party-2017. - Continued - October – December 2017 Exhibits & Events at the California Museum Updated 10/10/17 “ARTE Y ALMAS: DIA DE LOS MUERTOS 2017” 10/13 – 12/30/17 A journey through life, love and death, Arte y Almas: Día de Los Muertos 2017 (Art & Souls: Day of the Dead 2017) features contemporary altar installations honoring the achievements of Latino Californians in activism, civil rights, science and the arts by La Sonrisa de la Muerte and Lapiztola from Mexico, along with California artists Luis Campos-Garcia and Oscar Magallanes. Opening at the Día de Los Muertos Fiesta 2017 on Fri., Oct. 13, the exhibit explores the Mexican cultural tradition of honoring deceased loved ones each year on November 1 and 2 by creating calaveras de azúcar (sugar skulls), altares de muertos (altars of the dead) and ofrendas (offerings), which has evolved from the Aztecs to modern-day Mexico and California. Members of the public are also invited to celebrate friends and family with a remembrance in the exhibit’s Community Altar open Oct. 7 through Dec. 30, 2017. For more information, visit http://www.californiamuseum.org/arte-almas. “LIGHT & NOIR: EXILES & ÉMIGRÉS IN HOLLYWOOD, 1933-1950” THROUGH 10/15/17 Organized by the Skirball Cultural Institute in association with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, “Light & Noir: Exiles & Émigrés in Hollywood, 1933-1950” highlights the history of émigrés in the American film industry who fled Europe as refugees of Nazi persecution and their legacy in American cinema and culture through achievements in “Casablanca” (1942), “Double Indemnity” (1944), “Sunset Boulevard” (1950) and 13 other classic films. Drawn from the collections of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Warner Bros., NBCUniversal, Paramount and more, rare artifacts and memorabilia reveal the history of Hollywood’s formative era through the lens of the émigré experience, demonstrating a legacy of innovation that continues to shape the industry today. SUGAR SKULL WORKSHOP SERIES 10/28 & 10/29/17 Learn how to design and decorate “calaveras de azúcar” (sugar skulls) for “Día de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead) in one of 5 hands-on workshop sessions on Sat., Oct. 28 and Sun., Oct. 29. Each session limited to a maximum of 40 participants and requires advance registration and payment of $20.00 materials fee. For more information or to register, visit http://www.californiamuseum.org/skull-2017. 10th ANNUAL CALIFORNIA HALL OF FAME ARTIFACT EXHIBIT THROUGH 10/29/17 Highlighting the lives and legacies of inductees into the 10th class of California Hall of Fame, this all new exhibit features artifacts and ephemera on loan from the inductees’ personal collections. Notable artifacts include: Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones costume from “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981); George Takei’s Hikaru Sulu costume from “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home” (1986); Isabel Allende’s Presidential Medal of Freedom for Literature awarded by President Barack Obama in 2014; Corita Kent’s original silk-screened serigraph “Yes #3” from 1979 and more. Featuring over 45 landscape photographs taken across the state, this traveling exhibition from Exhibit Envoy is a visual survey of California's diverse and delicately- balanced ecosystems that reveals the effects of global warming and other human impacts on our native plants. From farm worker organizer Dolores Huerta and astronaut Sally Ride to designer Ray Eames and architect Julia Morgan, artifacts highlight extraordinary accomplishments of over 200 women over the last 165 years. Inspired by former First Lady Maria Shriver, the exhibit was developed in partnership with California State Parks. Through artifacts, original art, oral histories and an interactive language kiosk, the exhibit chronicles the histories and cultural legacies of over 100 tribes. Highlights include the Chipped Stone Bear, California's official prehistoric artifact; baskets woven by Native artists; a fur cape owned by Ishi; and more. For more information, visit http://www.californiamuseum.org/california-indians. “CALIFORNIA MISSIONS: A JOURNEY ALONG THE EL CAMINO REAL” Designed to correspond with State standards for 4th grade students, this exhibit includes rare artifacts from Missions across the state, such as iron tools handmade at Mission Santa Barbara, a marriage registry document written by Father Junípero Serra, an 1893 painting of Mission San Luis Rey on an original tile from that mission, and more. In addition, oral history brings this pivotal chapter of history into the present through the modern perspective of Andrew A. Galvan, the first Native curator of Mission Dolores in San Francisco.
