The final definitive version of this article has been published as: 'World Cup France 98: Metaphors, meanings, and values', International Review for the Sociology of Sport , 35 (3) By SAGE publications on SAGE Journals online http://online.sagepub.com World Cup France ‘98: Metaphors, Meanings and Values Hugh Dauncey and Geoff Hare (University of Newcastle upon Tyne) The 1998 World Cup Finals focused the attention of the world on France. The cumulative television audience for the 64 matches was nearly 40 billion - the biggest ever audience for a single event. French political and economic decision makers were very aware, as will be seen, that for a month the eyes of the world were on France. On the night of July 12th, whether in Paris and other cities or in smaller communities all over France, there was an outpouring of joy and sentiment that was unprecedented - at least, most people agreed, since the Liberation of 1944. Huge numbers of people watched the final, whether at home on TV or in bars or in front of one of the giant screens erected in many large towns, and then poured onto the streets in spontaneous and good-humoured celebration. In Paris, hundreds of thousands gathered again on the Champs Elysées the next day to see the Cup paraded in an open-topped bus. For all, the victory was an unforgettable experience. An element that was commented on by many was the appropriation by the crowds of the red, white and blue national colours: manufacturers of the French national flag had never known such demand since the death of General de Gaulle.

Football in France Global Sport Cultures Eds Gary Armstrong, Brunel University, Richard Giulianotti, University of Aberdeen, and David Andrews, The University of Maryland From the Olympics and the World Cup to extreme sports and kabaddi, the social significance of sport at both global and local levels has become increasingly clear in recent years. The contested nature of identity is widely addressed in the social sciences, but sport as a particularly revealing site of such contestation, in both industrialising and post-industrial nations, has been less fruitfully explored. Further, sport and sporting corporations are increasingly powerful players in the world economy. Sport is now central to the social and technological development of mass media, notably in telecommunications and digital television. It is also a crucial medium through which specific populations and political elites communicate and interact with each other on a global stage. Berg publishers are pleased to announce a new book series that will examine and evaluate the role of sport in the contemporary world. Truly global in scope, the series seeks to adopt a grounded, constructively critical stance towards prior work within sport studies and to answer such questions as: • How are sports experienced and practised at the everyday level within local settings? • How do specific cultures construct and negotiate forms of social stratification (such as gender, class, ethnicity) within sporting contexts? • What is the impact of mediation and corporate globalisation upon local sports cultures? Determinedly interdisciplinary, the series will nevertheless privilege anthropological, historical and sociological approaches, but will consider submissions from cultural studies, economics, geography, human kinetics, international relations, law, philosophy and political science.

It is not a study of the Negro in the French colonies or of colonial conditions, for that is a different story. Occasion ally, however, reference to colonial happenings is brought in as necessary to set forth the background. The author has tried assiduously to restrict his attention to those of whose Negroid blood he could be certain, but whenever the distinction has been significant, he has considered as mulattoes all those having any mixture of Negro and white blood.

In mid 2000s the tv rights income reaches a 873 million euro for the 2005-06 season, with the Serie A tv rights annual income to gradually increase from a 844 million euro for the 2009-10 season to an amazing approximate 1,4 billion euro for the 2018-21 season. All these years Lega Calcio experimented a lot in the designing and application of a tv rights selling mechanism and its accompanied tv rights income distribution model. The study could be used by several professional football leagues, with the Greek Superleague being one of them, in order its higher management to evaluate the actions LFP undertook all these years and how these actions affected could be followed. 1. Introduction The professional football in France was established in 1932, with the foundation by the national football federation (Fédération Française de Football) of the professional football league, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP).

Academic interest in football is a relatively recent phenomenon in France but one which has undoubtedly been given fresh impetus by the double success of the 1998 World Cup finals. Despite disquiet in certain quarters about the ticket allocation, the organisation and running of the finals by the French hosts were generally praiseworthy, presented a largely positive image of France to the world and offered, according to Dauncey and Hare, 'a statement of national political and economic self-confidence'. 1 Also, of course, the fact that the host nation was the ultimate winner of the tournament helped raise even further the profile of football in France and guaranteed its place of pre-eminence in the growth area of academic enquiry that is popular culture. The three works under review were, for sound commercial reasons, all published in the period immediately before the World Cup finals. Two of the texts are written by established scholars (Bromberger and Mignon) whilst the third signals the entry into the field of a new researcher (Ravenel). All three demonstrate not only the burgeoning of interest in football in French academic circles but also the increasing diversification of the study itself.

  • Crowd Control: Transforming Stadium Spectatorship in Interwar France
Crowd Control: Transforming Stadium Spectatorship in Interwar France Rob Lewis Grinnell College* A record crowd of 25,000 spectators welcomed the first day of 1913 by witnessing an international rugby clash between France and Scotland at the Parc des Princes stadium on the southwestern edge of Paris. L'Auto, the influential daily sports newspaper, described an "unimaginable din" at the entrances to the stadium; authorities were forced to close the gates to both the cheap standing-room section (the populaires) and the main grandstands, as "not another spectator" could fit inside the stadium.1 But the crowd's festive New Year mood quickly soured during the match. When the Scottish side handily defeated the French, twenty-one to three, the public turned its anger on the English referee, J. W. Baxter, who appeared to favor the Scots in some of his decisions. The crowd stormed the field at the end of the match, hoping to lay hands on Baxter. The unfortunate referee was able to escape to the dressing rooms thanks to the timely intervention of police forces on horseback and several burly rugby players who screened him from the angry spectators. After a half-hour wait, Baxter fled the stadium in the automobile of one of the chief French rugby officials, disappointing the thousands still waiting to inflict further damage upon him. The "Baxter Match," as it was remembered in France, sounded alarm bells for French journalists and sports officials. L'Auto's editor Henri Desgrange described it as the first "violent" stadium incident on French soil.2 L'Auto also read the Baxter 1 L'Auto, 2 Jan.

163 Bull. Soc. Pharm. Bordeaux, 2003, 142, 163-170 VANILLE ET PARFUMS (*) J.M.
