The Epistle St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church OCTOBER 22909 Center Ridge Road, Rocky River, Ohio 2012 Pastoral Thoughts by Fr. Jim Doukas October seems to be such an enjoyable month as well as a Blessed One. Our Church will be blessed because the Feastday Celebration of our St.

Demetrios Parish takes place October 25 th and 26 th . Vesper Service on Thursday, October 25 will be held at 7:00 p.m.; at this service the children of our Greek School will be present and able to sing a few Liturgical Hymns along with the visiting Clergy, Cantors, and attendees. On Friday, October 26 th , we will have a double celebration. Not only will be celebrating St Demetrios Day, but also, commencing at 8:30 a.m., our Holy Church will be hosting the “Hawaiian Myrrh-Streaming Iveron Icon of the Mother of God.” The myrrh- streaming icon depicts the Mother of God holding the Christ Child. The myrrh that flows from this icon is an oil-like substance possessing the fragrance of roses. It is considered a great blessing from the Mother of God and many healings, both spiritual and physical, have been attributed to it. The icon is a replica of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God of Montreal. The original icon of the Iveron Mother of God is still housed in the ancient Iveron Monastery in the monastic peninsula of Mount Athos, Greece. For more on the history of this icon, see p. 9 For more information or to reserve your tickets call 440-331-2246 or email: As you can see, both of these beautiful days will be attended by [email protected] many faithful pilgrims from the Greater Cleveland area. In addition to all of this, commencing Tuesday, October 23 rd , for five weeks, the Spiritual Life Committee is hosting a video presentation and disucssion entitled “An Hour with the Saints.” (Each session will be 5:30-6:30 p.m.) See. P. 9 for more details. Please make plans to be present to celebrate the liturgy this week and share in a special coffee hour sponsored by the Parish Council. This is the 2nd part of an ongoing series that will be published monthly in the Epistle as an effort to increase our knowledge and understanding of our role as stewards in our parish and our community.

TOPIC: Financial duties of a member OBJECTIVE: To answer the question, “What is the reason we pass 2 baskets every week?” The first basket that we pass every week is collected and used for our general operating expenses. The second basket is collected and applied entirely towards the mortgage. The only exception to this rule occurs a couple times a year when the basket is passed for a specific purpose which is announced in the bulletin and by Fr. Jim at that time. Giving Weekly-Giving Cheerfully In 1 Corinthians 16:2, we read, “On the first day of every week, each one of us should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his/her income ” RSVP to Koula Kadras at 216-570-9901 Regular stewardship contributions are easier to manage and keep the Church and her ministries in our thoughts and plans. Tickets $125/person One way to do this is through automatically scheduled ($80 Tax deductible) payments sent directly from our bank. Another way is Dress: Cocktail Attire utilizing the weekly pledge envelopes provided by the church. In this way we offer back to God the “first fruits” of Proceeds to benefit the renovation of our labor. In 2 Corinthians 9:7 we read, “Each person should the St. Demetrios Cultural Center give what he/she has decided in his/her heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver .” It helps to know that your annual Stewardship pledge helps fund the Operating Budget of the Parish which includes: providing worship services and sacraments, education of the faithful, ministry and assistance for all outreach and youth programs, salaries for our clergy and staff, maintaining our building and property, paying our mortgage, and support of our Metropolis and Archdiocese. Together we bear a responsibility for the welfare of the Church He has entrusted to us. As Stewardship Month approaches in November and new pledge cards will be distributed, please prayerfully consider: Am I returning a fair and meaningful proportion of my time, talent, and treasure to St. Demetrios for His ministry? How does His portion compare to the amount I spend on personal entertainment? Do I realize that Christian freedom is coupled with Christian responsibility? Am I a good steward of Christ and His Church? 4 P a r i s h N e w s OUR NEWEST LITTLE ANGEL After working hard at our festival in June, Congratulations to George & Christina some St. Demetrios Asimou on the birth of the parishioners with Fr. granddaughter Victoria , daughter of Jim and Pres.
