ABSTRACT This thesis is an attempt to trace the rise of Twelver Shi'ite externalism in Safavid Iran and its consolidation under the auspices of the era's most renowned scholar, 'Allama Muhammad Ba.qir Magid. Chapter I is the theoretical basis of the study and comprises an in-depth analy- sis of the concepts of fman (belief), is/dm/Islam (submission) and 'dm (knowledge) as portrayed in the Quran, the Traditions, and in exegeses of classical and modern scholars, both Sunnite and Shi'ite. Chapter II begins with a definition of the terms `internalism' and 'externalism' in the light of the imän - islcim dichotomy discussed in Chapter I, and places the subject against a relevant historical backdrop, namely pre-Safavid Iran. The rise of the Safavids, who were later to impose externalist dogma on a populace with decidedly non-externalist religious proclivities, is examined and their motives for choosing Twelver Shi'ism are questioned. Chapter III covers the Safavid era from the reign of Shah Isma`il I to Shah Sul- tan Husayn and deals with the milieux and teachings of internalist and externalist scholars, the interaction between the two groups, their relations with the rulers of the day, and their attitudes towards the question of government. Chapter IV is devoted to the life and works of Muhammad Baqir Majlisi, the externalist par excellence of the Safavid era. His role in the consolidation of the Twelver Shi'ite 'orthodoxy' is reappraised and his attitudes to the state and to non-externalist religious orientations such as Sufism are examined. Chapter V takes a closer look at those doctrines in Majlisrs magnum opus the BilAr al-anwar which best exemplify the externalizing tendencies that lie at the root of many Twelver Shi'ite beliefs. The chapter ends with a modern critique of the Safavid fuqahci' and a brief comparison of Safavid externalism with current religious trends in Iran. 11 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Countless individuals have assisted, either directly or indirectly, in the creation of this thesis.     − QisasAA Contribution to the Theory of Ghaybah in Twelver Shı‘ism QisasAA Contribution to the Theory of Ghaybah in Twelver Shı‘ism− Kyoko YOSHIDA* In this paper, I analyze the role of qisasAA (narrative stories) materials, which are often incorporated into the Twelver Shı‘ite− theological discussions, by focusing mainly on the stories of the al-KhidrA (or al- Khadir)A legend in the tenth and the eleventh century ghaybah discussions. The goal is to demonstrate the essential function that the narrative elements have performed in argumentations of the Twelver Shı‘ite− theory of Imam. The importance of qisasAA materials in promulgating the doctrine of Imamah− in the Twelver Shı‘ism− tended to be underestimated in the previous studies because of the mythical and legendary representations of qisasAA materials. My analysis makes clear that qisasAA materials do not only illustrate events in the sacred history, but also open possibilities for the miraculous affairs to happen in the actual world. In this sense, qisasAA materials have been utilized as a useful element for the doctrinal argumentations in the Twelver Shı‘ism.− − Keywords: stories, al-Khidr,A occultation, Ibn Babawayh, longevity Introduction In this paper, I analyze how qisasAA traditions have been utilized in the promulgation of Twelver Shı‘ite− doctrine. The term qisasAA (sing. qissah AA ) means narrative stories addressed in the Qur’an− principally. However, it also includes the orated and elaborated tales and legends based on storytelling that flourished in the early Umayyad era (Norris 1983, 247). The main topic of the Mathnavi is love. In this poem, Mawlavi speaks of the nature of love, the way to it, its master and perils. Among the three approaches to religion, that is, narrative, rational and heartfelt, he chooses the last because it is the way of faith and love, or walayah. He considers ‘Ali to be the source or wali for this way after the Prophet. Thus the Mathnavi is also a book of walayah, and Mawlavi is a Shi‘ite, not in the current sense of the jurists or dialectical theologians, but in its true meaning, that is, belief in the continuing spirituality and walayah of the Prophet in the person of ‘Ali, and belief that after the Prophet there is always a living guide (wali) on the way of love. Among various Muslim scholars, it is only the Sufis who have followed the way of the heart. According to this way, God is not only the divine legislator, to Whom one prays with fear of hell and yearning to enter paradise, but He is the Beloved.1 The way of the heart is the way of love, in which the wayfarer purifies his heart until he gains union with God.

It consists of a note on the sources and seven chapters. The first chapter is a biographical review of al-Hakim's person. It introduces a history of his birth, childhood, succession to the Caliphate, his education and private life and it examines the contradiction in the sources concerning his character. Chapter II discusses the problems which al-Hakim inherited from the previous rule and examines their impact on the political life of his State. Chapter III introduces the administration of the internal affairs of the State.

Research into the formative period of Shiʿi Islam has come a long way in the last couple of decades. This welcome development has been inspired, in particular, by the work of Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi, whose main in- sight has been to posit that “ancient” Shiʿism is marked precisely by those doctrines and positions that the later rationalizing tradition rejected as “ex- treme” (ghulūw). This particular form of heretication and othering made ajiss34-4-noconfrep_ajiss 11/3/2017 9:31 AM Page 83 Book Reviews 83 sense once the communities had been established; were seeking official recognition by the Abbasid and other royal courts; and developed the in - stitutions of learning, as well as structures and hierarchies, visible in other Muslim confessions. Nevertheless, there remained the questions of what made Shiʿi Islam distinct, how one could differentiate among those tendencies that defined themselves as Shiʿi, and what sort of construction was “extremism” (I rec - ognize that this is a highly inadequate rendition of ghulūw ). Amir-Moezzi’s contribution is further complicated by Hossein Modarressi’s groundbreak - ing study of the formative period during the early 1990s, in which he posited that ghulūw was exterior to the circle of the Imams and perceived as a constant contrast and threat to the moderation of the scholarly com - munity that remains to this day. Thus one finds that the classical era’s rival tendencies of either “ex - tremism” or “shortcoming” ( taqṣīr ) have been reproduced in more recent debates and even among the academics studying these issues.

    Syria’s Alawites and the Politics of Sectarian Insecurity: A Khaldunian Perspective* Leon Goldsmith** Abstract Since 2000 there has been varied academic analysis about the nature and direction of modern Syrian politics. The Syrian political crisis which began March 15, 2011 however, came as a surprise to most, and will no doubt spark a new round of debate about its causes and possible effects. One aspect that has been widely overlooked or misread is the critical role of the Syrian Alawite community in determining Syria’s future. Ongoing Alawite support to the Asad regime is by no means assured. The foundations of Alawite approval of the regime have steadily eroded during the second generation of Asad rule in a process, which resembles Ibn Khaldun’s theo- ry for the decline of group ‘asabiyya in the second stage of dynasties. The one resilient factor that ties the Alawite community to the Syrian regime however, is sectarian insecurity. The Asad regime requires, and promotes, Alawite insecurity in order to preserve its power. Nevertheless, there re- mains an opportunity, and a precedent, for Alawites to break free from this political deadlock and participate equally and openly in a ‘new’ Syria.     A Historical Inquiry in the Essential Knowledge for the Concept of “Rafiḍi” Authors: Hashem Andisheh (Iran)1, Dr. Mohammad Ridha Payvandi (Iran)2 Reccive: 13/05/2020 Accept: 01/12/2020 Abstract The key word “Rafiḍi” in historical sources comes in the form of “Rafiḍia”, “Rafiḍian” and “Rafiḍis” and it is derived from the word “Rafiḍi” meaning to leave, and in the theological term of the opponents of the Imamiyya denomination, it is a title that refers to all Shia sects and sometimes to a specific group and sect of Shia and sometimes to those who express love for the family of the Prophet, is applied. In this research, which has been done by library method and review of documents, various sources of Shia and Sunni hadiths have been used and an attempt has been made to point out their role in Islamic history and civilization by explaining the concept of Rafiḍi. The importance of the discussion is especially evident from the fact that the Rafiḍi discussion has caused ambiguity among Muslims, so the main question of the article was where did the origin of this naming start and what period does it go back to? In order to answer this basic question and the subject that helps to clarify the ambiguities in this area, this article was conducted with a historical approach to expressing the problem and exploring the nature and explanation of the discussion to reach the basic question of the research.
